God’s Vengeance on the Nations

63 Who is this who comes from (A)Edom,
With (B)garments of [a]glowing colors from (C)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[b]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, (D)mighty to save.”
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who (E)treads in the wine press?
(F)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no one with Me.
I also (G)trod them in My anger
And (H)trampled them in My wrath;
And (I)their [c]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [d]stained all My clothes.
For the (J)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
I looked, but there was (K)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My (L)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
I (M)trampled down the peoples in My anger
And made them (N)drunk with My wrath,
And I [e]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

God’s Ancient Mercies Recalled

I will make mention of the (O)mercies of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great (P)goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His (Q)compassion
And according to the abundance of His mercies.
For He said, “Certainly they are (R)My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their (S)Savior.
In all their distress [f](T)He was distressed,
And the (U)angel of His presence saved them;
In His (V)love and in His mercy He (W)redeemed them,
And He (X)lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they (Y)rebelled
And grieved His (Z)Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then (AA)His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is (AB)He who brought them up out of the sea with the [g]shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who (AC)put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [h]them,
12 Who caused His (AD)glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who (AE)divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not (AF)stumble;
14 Like the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the (AG)Lord gave [i]them rest.
So You (AH)led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.

You Are Our Father

15 (AI)Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious (AJ)lofty habitation;
Where are Your (AK)zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The (AL)stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our (AM)Father, though (AN)Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, Lord, are our Father,
Our (AO)Redeemer from ancient times is Your name.
17 Why, Lord, do You (AP)cause us to stray from Your ways
And (AQ)harden our heart from fearing You?
(AR)Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have (AS)trampled it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.

Honor Widows

(A)Do not sharply rebuke an (B)older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, and to (C)the younger men as brothers, to the older women as mothers, and to the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows who are actually (D)widows; but if any widow has children or grandchildren, (E)they must first learn to show proper respect for their own family and to give back compensation to their parents; for this is (F)acceptable in the sight of God. Now she who is actually a (G)widow and has been left alone (H)has set her hope on God, and she continues in (I)requests and prayers night and day. But she who (J)indulges herself in luxury is (K)dead, even while she lives. [a](L)Give these instructions as well, so that they may be above reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has (M)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

A widow is to be (N)put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been (O)the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for (P)good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has (Q)shown hospitality to strangers, if she (R)has washed the [b]saints’ feet, if she has (S)assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to register younger widows, for when they feel (T)physical desires alienating them from Christ, they want to get married, 12 thereby incurring condemnation, because they have [c]ignored their previous pledge. 13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also they become (U)gossips and (V)busybodies, talking about (W)things not proper to mention. 14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get (X)married, have children, (Y)manage their households, and (Z)give the enemy no opportunity for reproach; 15 for some (AA)have already turned away to follow (AB)Satan. 16 If any woman who is a believer (AC)has dependent widows, she must (AD)assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are actually (AE)widows.

Concerning Elders

17 (AF)The elders who (AG)lead well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who (AH)work hard [d]at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “(AI)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing,” and “(AJ)The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not accept an accusation against an (AK)elder except on the basis of (AL)two or three witnesses. 20 Those who continue in sin, (AM)rebuke in the presence of all, (AN)so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning. 21 (AO)I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality. 22 (AP)Do not lay hands upon anyone too quickly and [e]thereby share (AQ)responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself [f]free from sin.

23 Do not go on drinking only water, but (AR)use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

24 The sins of some people are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins (AS)follow after. 25 Likewise also, deeds that are good are quite evident, and (AT)those which are otherwise cannot be concealed.

Instructions to Those Who Minister

(AU)All who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor (AV)so that the name of God and our doctrine will not be [g]spoken against. Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are (AW)brothers or sisters, but must serve them all the more, because those who [h]partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. (AX)Teach and [i]preach these principles.

If anyone (AY)advocates a different doctrine and does not [j]agree with (AZ)sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine (BA)conforming to godliness, he is (BB)conceited and understands nothing; but he [k]has a sick craving for (BC)controversial questions and (BD)disputes about words, from which come envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between (BE)people of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who (BF)suppose that [l]godliness is a means of gain. (BG)But godliness actually is a means of (BH)great gain when accompanied by (BI)contentment. For (BJ)we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either. If we (BK)have food and [m]covering, with these we shall be content. (BL)But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and (BM)a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For (BN)the love of money is a root of all [n]sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have (BO)wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many [o]griefs.

11 But (BP)flee from these things, you (BQ)man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, (BR)faith, (BS)love, [p]perseverance, and gentleness. 12 (BT)Fight the good fight of (BU)faith; (BV)take hold of the eternal life (BW)to which you were called, and for which you made the good (BX)confession in the presence of (BY)many witnesses. 13 (BZ)I direct you in the presence of God, who [q]gives life to all things, and of (CA)Christ Jesus, who testified the (CB)good confession (CC)before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without [r]fault or reproach until the (CD)appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He will [s]bring about at (CE)the proper time—He who is (CF)the blessed and (CG)only Sovereign, (CH)the King of [t]kings and (CI)Lord of [u]lords, 16 (CJ)who alone possesses immortality and (CK)dwells in unapproachable light, (CL)whom [v]no one has seen or can see. (CM)To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

17 Instruct those who are rich in (CN)this present world (CO)not to be conceited or to (CP)set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (CQ)who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in (CR)good [w]works, (CS)to be generous and ready to share, 19 (CT)storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may (CU)take hold of that which is truly life.

20 (CV)Timothy, protect (CW)what has been entrusted to you, avoiding (CX)worldly, empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”— 21 which some have professed and thereby have (CY)gone astray [x]from (CZ)the faith.

(DA)Grace be with you.

Prayer of an Afflicted Man for Mercy on Himself and on Zion.

A Prayer of the afflicted when he is weak and [a]pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 (A)Hear my prayer, Lord!
And let my cry for help (B)come to You.
(C)Do not hide Your face from me on the day of my distress;
(D)Incline Your ear to me;
On the day when I call (E)answer me quickly.
For my days (F)have ended in smoke,
And my (G)bones have been scorched like a hearth.
My heart (H)has been struck like [b]grass and has (I)withered,
Indeed, I (J)forget to eat my bread.
Because of the [c]loudness of my groaning
My (K)bones [d]cling to my flesh.
I resemble a (L)pelican of the wilderness;
I have become like an owl of the ruins.
I (M)lie awake,
I have become like a solitary bird on a housetop.

My enemies (N)have taunted me all day long;
Those who [e](O)deride me [f]have used my name as a (P)curse.
For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And (Q)mixed my drink with weeping
10 (R)Because of Your indignation and Your wrath;
For You have (S)lifted me up and thrown me away.
11 My days are like a [g](T)lengthened shadow,
And [h]I (U)wither away like [i]grass.

12 But You, Lord, [j](V)remain forever,
And Your [k](W)name remains to all generations.
13 You will (X)arise and have (Y)compassion on Zion;
For (Z)it is time to be gracious to her,
For the (AA)appointed time has come.
14 Surely Your servants [l]take pleasure in her stones,
And feel pity for her dust.
15 [m]So the [n](AB)nations will fear the name of the Lord,
And (AC)all the kings of the earth, Your glory.
16 For the Lord has (AD)built up Zion;
He has (AE)appeared in His glory.
17 He has (AF)turned His attention to the prayer of the [o]destitute
And has not despised their prayer.

18 [p]This will be (AG)written for the (AH)generation to come,
[q]That (AI)a people yet to be created [r]may praise [s]the Lord:
19 For He (AJ)looked down from His holy height;
(AK)From heaven the Lord looked [t]upon the earth,
20 To hear the (AL)groaning of the prisoner,
To (AM)set free [u]those who were doomed to death,
21 So that people may (AN)tell of the name of the Lord in Zion,
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 When (AO)the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23 He has broken my strength in the way;
He has (AP)shortened my days.
24 I say, “My God, (AQ)do not take me away in the middle of my days,
Your (AR)years are [v]throughout all generations.
25 In time of old You (AS)founded the earth,
And the (AT)heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 [w]Even they will (AU)perish, but You endure;
All of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will pass away.
27 But You are [x](AV)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
28 The (AW)children of Your servants will continue,
And their [y](AX)descendants will be established before You.”
