Rovina dei regni di Siria e d’Israele
8 (A)Il Signore mi disse: «Prendi una tavoletta grande[a] e scrivici sopra in caratteri leggibili[b]: “Affrettate il saccheggio! Presto, al bottino!”»
2 Mi scelsi come testimoni fedeli il sacerdote Uria e Zaccaria, figlio di Ieberechia. 3 Mi unii pure alla profetessa, e lei concepì e partorì un figlio. Allora il Signore mi disse: «Chiamalo “Affrettate il saccheggio. Presto al bottino”; 4 poiché prima che il bambino sappia chiamare papà e mamma, le ricchezze di Damasco e il bottino di Samaria saranno portati davanti al re d’Assiria».
5 (B)Il Signore mi parlò ancora e mi disse:
6 «Siccome questo popolo ha disprezzato le acque di Siloe che scorrono placide, e si rallegra a causa di Resin e del figlio di Remalia,
7 ecco, il Signore sta per far salire su di loro le potenti e grandi acque del fiume[c], cioè il re d’Assiria e tutta la sua gloria; esso s’innalzerà dappertutto sopra il suo livello, e strariperà su tutte le sue sponde.
8 Passerà sopra Giuda, inonderà e passerà oltre; arriverà fino al collo, e le sue ali spiegate copriranno tutta la larghezza del tuo paese, o Emmanuele!»
9 Mandate pure grida di guerra, o popoli; sarete frantumati! Prestate orecchio, o voi tutti di paesi lontani! Preparatevi pure alla lotta; sarete frantumati!
10 Fate pure dei piani, e saranno sventati! Dite pure la parola, e rimarrà senza effetto, perché Dio è con noi!
11 (C)Così infatti mi ha parlato il Signore, quando la sua mano mi ha afferrato, ed egli mi ha avvertito di non camminare per la via di questo popolo, e mi ha detto:
12 «Non chiamate congiura tutto ciò che questo popolo chiama congiura; non temete ciò che esso teme, e non vi spaventate.
13 Santificate il Signore degli eserciti![d] Sia lui quello per cui provate timore e paura!
14 Egli sarà un santuario, ma anche una pietra d’intoppo, un sasso d’inciampo per le due case d’Israele[e], un laccio e una rete per gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.
15 Molti di loro inciamperanno, cadranno, saranno infranti, rimarranno nel laccio e saranno presi.
16 Chiudi questa testimonianza, sigilla questa legge tra i miei discepoli».
17 (D)Io aspetto il Signore, che nasconde la sua faccia alla casa di Giacobbe; in lui ripongo la mia speranza.
18 Eccomi con i figli che il Signore mi ha dati[f]; noi siamo dei segni e dei presagi in Israele da parte del Signore degli eserciti, che abita sul monte Sion.
19 Se vi si dice: «Consultate quelli che evocano gli spiriti e gli indovini, quelli che sussurrano e bisbigliano», rispondete: «Un popolo non deve forse consultare il suo Dio? Si rivolgerà forse ai morti in favore dei vivi?
20 Alla legge[g]! Alla testimonianza!» Se il popolo non parla così, non vi sarà per lui nessuna aurora!
21 Andrà peregrinando per il paese, affranto e affamato; quando avrà fame, si irriterà e maledirà il suo re e il suo Dio. Volgerà lo sguardo in alto,
22 lo volgerà verso terra, ed ecco, non vedrà che difficoltà, tenebre e oscurità piena d’angoscia; sarà sospinto in mezzo a fitte tenebre.
Tempi messianici
23 (E)Ma le tenebre non dureranno sempre sulla terra che è ora nell’angoscia. Come nei tempi passati Dio coprì di obbrobrio il paese di Zabulon e il paese di Neftali, così nei tempi a venire coprirà di gloria la terra vicina al mare[h], di là dal Giordano, la Galilea dei Gentili[i].

Nascita di un figlio di Isaia
8 Il Signore mi disse: «Prenditi una grande tavoletta e scrivici con caratteri ordinari: A Mahèr-salàl-cash-baz». 2 Io mi presi testimoni fidati, il sacerdote Uria e Zaccaria figlio di Iebarachìa. 3 Poi mi unii alla profetessa, la quale concepì e partorì un figlio. Il Signore mi disse: «Chiamalo Mahèr-salàl-cash-baz, 4 poiché, prima che il bambino sappia dire babbo e mamma, le ricchezze di Damasco e le spoglie di Samaria saranno portate davanti al re di Assiria».
Siloe e l'Eufrate
5 Il Signore mi disse di nuovo:
6 «Poiché questo popolo ha rigettato
le acque di Siloe, che scorrono piano,
e trema per Rezìn e per il figlio di Romelia,
7 per questo, ecco,
il Signore gonfierà contro di loro
le acque del fiume,
impetuose e abbondanti:
cioè il re assiro con tutto il suo splendore,
irromperà in tutti i suoi canali
e strariperà da tutte le sue sponde.
8 Penetrerà in Giuda,
lo inonderà e lo attraverserà
fino a giungere al collo.
Le sue ali distese copriranno
tutta l'estensione del tuo paese, Emmanuele.
9 Sappiatelo, popoli: sarete frantumati;
ascoltate voi tutte, nazioni lontane,
cingete le armi e sarete frantumate.
10 Preparate un piano, sarà senza effetti;
fate un proclama, non si realizzerà,
perché Dio è con noi».
La missione di Isaia
11 Poiché così il Signore mi disse, quando mi aveva preso per mano e mi aveva proibito di incamminarmi nella via di questo popolo:
12 «Non chiamate congiura
ciò che questo popolo chiama congiura,
non temete ciò che esso teme e non abbiate paura».
13 Il Signore degli eserciti, lui solo ritenete santo.
Egli sia l'oggetto del vostro timore, della vostra paura.
14 Egli sarà laccio e pietra d'inciampo
e scoglio che fa cadere
per le due case di Israele,
laccio e trabocchetto per chi abita in Gerusalemme.
15 Tra di loro molti inciamperanno,
cadranno e si sfracelleranno,
saranno presi e catturati.
16 Si chiuda questa testimonianza, si sigilli questa rivelazione nel cuore dei miei discepoli. 17 Io ho fiducia nel Signore, che ha nascosto il volto alla casa di Giacobbe, e spero in lui. 18 Ecco, io e i figli che il Signore mi ha dato, siamo segni e presagi per Israele da parte del Signore degli eserciti, che abita sul monte Sion.
19 Quando vi diranno: «Interrogate gli spiriti e gli indovini che bisbigliano e mormorano formule. Forse un popolo non deve consultare i suoi dei? Per i vivi consultare i morti?», 20 attenetevi alla rivelazione, alla testimonianza. Certo, faranno questo discorso che non offre speranza d'aurora.
Il cammino nella notte
21 Egli si aggirerà nel paese oppresso e affamato,
e, quando sarà affamato e preso dall'ira,
maledirà il suo re e il suo dio.
Guarderà in alto
22 e rivolgerà lo sguardo sulla terra
ed ecco angustia e tenebre
e oscurità desolante.
Ma la caligine sarà dissipata,
23 poiché non ci sarà più oscurità
dove ora è angoscia.
La liberazione
In passato umiliò la terra di Zàbulon e la terra di Nèftali, ma in futuro renderà gloriosa la via del mare, oltre il Giordano e la curva di Goim.

8 Then the Lord said to me, Take a large tablet [of wood, metal, or stone] and write upon it with a graving tool and in ordinary characters [which the humblest man can read]: Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz [they (the Assyrians) hasten to the spoil (of Syria and Israel), they speed to the prey].
2 And I took faithful witnesses to record and attest [this prophecy] for me, Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.
3 And I approached [my wife] the prophetess, and when she had conceived and borne a son, the Lord said to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz [as a continual reminder to the people of the prophecy],
4 For before the child knows how to say, My father or my mother, the riches of Damascus [Syria’s capital] and the spoil of Samaria [Israel’s capital] [a]shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.
5 The Lord spoke to me yet again and said,
6 Because this people [Israel and Judah] have refused and despised the waters of Shiloah [Siloam, the only perennial fountain of Jerusalem, and symbolic of God’s protection and sustaining power] that go gently, and rejoice in and with Rezin [the king of Syria] and Remaliah’s son [Pekah the king of Israel],
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the waters of the River [Euphrates], strong and many—even the king of Assyria and all the glory [of his gorgeous retinue]; and it will rise over all its channels, brooks, valleys, and canals and extend far beyond its banks;(A)
8 And it will [b]sweep on into Judah; it will overflow and go over [the hills], reaching even [but only] to the neck [of which Jerusalem is the head], and the outstretched wings [of the armies of Assyria] shall fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel [c][Messiah, God is with us]!(B)
9 Make an uproar and be broken in pieces, O you peoples [rage, raise the war cry, do your worst, and be utterly dismayed]! Give ear, all you [our enemies] of far countries. Gird yourselves [for war], and be thrown into consternation! Gird yourselves, and be [utterly] dismayed!
10 Take counsel together [against Judah], but it shall come to nought; speak the word, but it will not stand, for God is with us [Immanuel]!
11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with His strong hand [upon me], and warned and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
12 Do not call conspiracy [or hard, or holy] all that this people will call conspiracy [or hard, or holy]; neither be in fear of what they fear, nor [make others afraid and] in dread.
13 The Lord of hosts—regard Him as holy and honor His holy name [by regarding Him as your only hope of safety], and let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread [lest you offend Him by your fear of man and distrust of Him].
14 And He shall be a sanctuary [a sacred and indestructible asylum to those who reverently fear and trust in Him]; but He shall be a Stone of stumbling and a Rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.(C)
15 And many among them shall stumble thereon; and they shall fall and be broken, and be snared and taken.
16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law and the teaching among my [Isaiah’s] disciples.
17 And I will wait for the Lord, Who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; and I will look for and hope in Him.
18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are [d]signs and wonders [that are to take place] in Israel from the Lord of hosts, Who dwells on Mount Zion.
19 And when the people [instead of putting their trust in God] shall say to you, Consult for direction mediums and wizards who chirp and mutter, should not a people seek and consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
20 [Direct such people] to the teaching and to the testimony! If their teachings are not in accord with this word, it is surely because there is no dawn and no morning for them.
21 And they [who consult mediums and wizards] shall pass through [the land] sorely distressed and hungry; and when they are hungry, they will fret, and will curse by their king and their God; and whether they look upward
22 Or look to the earth, they will behold only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and into thick darkness and widespread, obscure night they shall be driven away.

- Isaiah 8:4 Samaria was overthrown by Assyria in 722 b.c., ten years after the downfall of Damascus, fulfilling this prophecy.
- Isaiah 8:8 This prophecy was literally fulfilled, and although Syria and Israel were conquered and led into captivity, the kingdom of Judah was spared and continued for over 130 years.
- Isaiah 8:8 In its fullest sense ‘Immanuel‘ [God with us] can apply only to the Messiah; the fact that Judah is His was and still is a pledge that, no matter how sorely overwhelmed, it shall be saved at last.
- Isaiah 8:18 Isaiah’s own name means “Salvation of the Lord.” His two children’s names were “signs” pointing to the coming crisis and the need for God’s help: Shear-jashub means “A remnant shall return” (Isa. 7:3), and Maher-shalal-hash-baz means “They hasten to the spoil; they speed to the prey,” referring to the Assyrians (Isa. 8:1).

Isaiah and His Children as Signs
8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[a](B) 2 So I called in Uriah(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(D) for me. 3 Then I made love to the prophetess,(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(G) 4 For before the boy knows(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(J)”
5 The Lord spoke to me again:
6 “Because this people has rejected(K)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(M)
7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(N) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(O) with all his pomp.(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(Q)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(R)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[b]!”(T)
9 Raise the war cry,[c](U) you nations, and be shattered!(V)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(W) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(X)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(Y)
for God is with us.[d](Z)
11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(AA) warning me not to follow(AB) the way of this people:
12 “Do not call conspiracy(AC)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(AD)
and do not dread it.(AE)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(AF)
he is the one you are to fear,(AG)
he is the one you are to dread.(AH)
14 He will be a holy place;(AI)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(AJ) that causes people to stumble(AK)
and a rock that makes them fall.(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(AM)
15 Many of them will stumble;(AN)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”
16 Bind up this testimony of warning(AO)
and seal(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(AS)
18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(AT) We are signs(AU) and symbols(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(AW)
The Darkness Turns to Light
19 When someone tells you to consult(AX) mediums and spiritists,(AY) who whisper and mutter,(AZ) should not a people inquire(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(BB) and the testimony of warning.(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(BD) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(BE) they will roam through the land;(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(BG) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(BI)
