Guerra contro Giuda

7 (A)Ai giorni di Acaz, figlio di Iotam, figlio di Uzzia, re di Giuda, Resin, re di Siria, e Peca, figlio di Remalia, re d’Israele, salirono contro Gerusalemme per muoverle guerra; ma non riuscirono a espugnarla.

2 Fu riferita alla casa di Davide questa notizia: «La Siria si è confederata con Efraim». Il cuore di Acaz e il cuore del suo popolo furono agitati, come gli alberi della foresta sono agitati dal vento.

3 Allora il Signore disse a Isaia: «Va’ incontro ad Acaz, tu con Sear-Iasub[a], tuo figlio, verso l’estremità dell’acquedotto della vasca superiore, sulla strada del campo del lavandaio e digli:

4 “Guarda di startene calmo e tranquillo, non temere e non ti si avvilisca il cuore a causa di questi due avanzi di tizzoni fumanti, a causa dell’ira furente di Resin e della Siria, e del figlio di Remalia.

5 Siccome la Siria, Efraim e il figlio di Remalia meditano del male a tuo danno, essi dicono:

6 ‘Saliamo contro Giuda, terrorizziamolo, apriamo una breccia e proclamiamo re in mezzo a esso il figlio di Tabbeel’”.

7 Così dice il Signore, Dio: “Questo non avrà effetto; non succederà!

8 Poiché Damasco è la capitale della Siria e Resin è il capo di Damasco, in sessantacinque anni Efraim sarà fiaccato al punto che non sarà più popolo.

9 Samaria è la capitale di Efraim e il figlio di Remalia è il capo di Samaria. Se voi non avete fede, certo, non potrete sussistere”.

10 (B)Il Signore parlò di nuovo ad Acaz e gli disse: 11 «Chiedi un segno al Signore, al tuo Dio! Chiedilo giù nei luoghi sottoterra o nei luoghi eccelsi!» 12 Acaz rispose: «Non chiederò nulla; non tenterò il Signore». 13 Isaia disse: «Ora ascoltate, o casa di Davide! È forse poca cosa per voi lo stancare gli uomini, che volete stancare anche il mio Dio?

14 Perciò il Signore stesso vi darà un segno: ecco, la giovane[b] concepirà, partorirà un figlio, e lo chiamerà[c] Emmanuele[d].

15 Egli mangerà panna e miele finché sappia rigettare il male e scegliere il bene.

16 Ma prima che il bambino sappia rigettare il male e scegliere il bene, il paese del quale tu temi i due re sarà devastato.

Giudizio contro Israele

17 (C)«Il Signore farà venire su di te, sul tuo popolo e sulla casa di tuo padre dei giorni come non se ne ebbero mai dal giorno che Efraim si è separato da Giuda, vale a dire il re d’Assiria.

18 In quel giorno il Signore fischierà alle mosche che sono all’estremità dei fiumi d’Egitto e alle api che sono nel paese d’Assiria.

19 Esse verranno e si poseranno tutte nelle valli deserte, nelle fessure delle rocce, su tutti i cespugli e su tutti i pascoli.

20 In quel giorno il Signore, con un rasoio preso a noleggio di là dal fiume[e], cioè con il re d’Assiria, raderà la testa, i peli dei piedi e porterà via anche la barba.

21 In quel giorno avverrà che uno nutrirà una giovenca e due pecore,

22 ed esse daranno tale abbondanza di latte, che egli mangerà panna; poiché panna e miele mangerà chiunque sarà rimasto superstite nel paese.

23 In quel giorno ogni terreno contenente mille viti, del valore di mille sicli d’argento, sarà abbandonato in balìa dei rovi e dei pruni.

24 Vi si entrerà con le frecce e con l’arco, perché tutto il paese non sarà che rovi e pruni.

25 Tutti i colli che si dissodavano con la vanga non saranno più frequentati per timore dei rovi e dei pruni; vi si lasceranno andare i buoi, e le pecore ne calpesteranno il suolo».

Primo intervento di Isaia

7 Nei giorni di Acaz figlio di Iotam, figlio di Ozia, re di Giuda, Rezìn re di Aram e Pekach figlio di Romelia, re di Israele, marciarono contro Gerusalemme per muoverle guerra, ma non riuscirono a espugnarla. 2 Fu dunque annunziato alla casa di Davide: «Gli Aramei si sono accampati in Efraim». Allora il suo cuore e il cuore del suo popolo si agitarono, come si agitano i rami del bosco per il vento.

3 Il Signore disse a Isaia: «Và incontro ad Acaz, tu e tuo figlio Seariasùb, fino al termine del canale della piscina superiore sulla strada del campo del lavandaio. 4 Tu gli dirai: Fà attenzione e stà tranquillo, non temere e il tuo cuore non si abbatta per quei due avanzi di tizzoni fumosi, per la collera di Rezìn degli Aramei e del figlio di Romelia. 5 Poiché gli Aramei, Efraim e il figlio di Romelia hanno tramato il male contro di te, dicendo: 6 Saliamo contro Giuda, devastiamolo e occupiamolo, e vi metteremo come re il figlio di Tabeèl.

7 Così dice il Signore Dio: Ciò non avverrà e non sarà!
8 Perché capitale di Aram è Damasco
e capo di Damasco è Rezìn.
9 Capitale di Efraim è Samaria
e capo di Samaria il figlio di Romelia.
Ancora sessantacinque anni
ed Efraim cesserà di essere un popolo.
Ma se non crederete, non avrete stabilità».

10 Il Signore parlò ancora ad Acaz: 11 «Chiedi un segno dal Signore tuo Dio, dal profondo degli inferi oppure lassù in alto». 12 Ma Acaz rispose: «Non lo chiederò, non voglio tentare il Signore». 13 Allora Isaia disse: «Ascoltate, casa di Davide! Non vi basta di stancare la pazienza degli uomini, perché ora vogliate stancare anche quella del mio Dio? 14 Pertanto il Signore stesso vi darà un segno. Ecco: la vergine concepirà e partorirà un figlio, che chiamerà Emmanuele. 15 Egli mangerà panna e miele finché non imparerà a rigettare il male e a scegliere il bene. 16 Poiché prima ancora che il bimbo impari a rigettare il male e a scegliere il bene, sarà abbandonato il paese di cui temi i due re. 17 Il Signore manderà su di te, sul tuo popolo e sulla casa di tuo padre giorni quali non vennero da quando Efraim si staccò da Giuda: manderà il re di Assiria».

Predizione di un'invasione

18 Avverrà in quel giorno:
il Signore farà un fischio alle mosche
che sono all'estremità dei canali di Egitto
e alle api che si trovano in Assiria.
19 Esse verranno e si poseranno tutte
nelle valli ricche di burroni,
nelle fessure delle rocce,
su ogni cespuglio e su ogni pascolo.
20 In quel giorno il Signore raderà
con rasoio preso in affitto oltre il fiume,
cioè il re assiro,
il capo e il pelo del corpo,
anche la barba toglierà via.
21 Avverrà in quel giorno:
ognuno alleverà una giovenca e due pecore.
22 Per l'abbondanza del latte che faranno,
si mangerà la panna;
di panna e miele si ciberà
ogni superstite in mezzo a questo paese.
23 Avverrà in quel giorno:
ogni luogo, dove erano mille viti
valutate mille sicli d'argento,
sarà preda dei rovi e dei pruni.
24 Vi si entrerà armati di frecce e di arco,
perché tutta la terra sarà rovi e pruni.
25 In tutti i monti,
che erano vangati con la vanga,
non si passerà più
per paura delle spine e dei rovi.
Serviranno da pascolo per armenti
e da luogo battuto dal gregge.

7 In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but they could not conquer it.

2 And the house of David [Judah] was told, Syria is allied with Ephraim [Israel]. And the heart [of Ahaz] and the hearts of his people trembled and shook, as the trees of the forest tremble and shake with the wind.

3 Then said the Lord to Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Judah’s King Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub [a remnant shall return], at the end of the aqueduct or canal of the Upper Pool on the highway to the Fuller’s Field;

4 And say to him, Take heed and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted because of these two stumps of smoking firebrands—at the fierce anger of [the Syrian King] Rezin and Syria and of the son of Remaliah [Pekah, usurper of the throne of Israel].

5 Because Syria, Ephraim [Israel], and the son of Remaliah have purposed evil against you [Judah], saying,

6 Let us go up against Judah and harass and terrify it; and let us cleave it asunder [each of us taking a portion], and set a [vassal] king in the midst of it, namely the son of Tabeel,

7 Thus says the Lord God: It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

8 For the head [the capital] of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is [King] Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken to pieces so that it will no longer be a people.

9 And the head (the capital) of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son [Pekah]. If you will not believe and trust and rely [on God and on the words of God’s prophet instead of Assyria], surely you will not be established nor will you remain.

10 Moreover, the Lord spoke again to King Ahaz, saying,

11 Ask for yourself a sign (a token or proof) of the Lord your God [one that will convince you that God has spoken and will keep His word]; ask it either in the depth below or in the height above [let it be as deep as Sheol or as high as heaven].

12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.

13 And [Isaiah] said, Hear then, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary and try the patience of men, but will you weary and try the patience of my God also?

14 Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, the young woman who is unmarried and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [God with us].(A)

15 Butter and curds and wild honey shall he eat when he knows [enough] to refuse the evil and choose the good.

16 For before the child shall know [enough] to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land [Canaan] whose two kings you abhor and of whom you are in sickening dread shall be forsaken [both Ephraim and Syria].(B)

17 The Lord shall bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim [the ten northern tribes] departed from Judah—even the king of [a]Assyria.

18 And in that day the Lord shall whistle for the fly [the numerous and troublesome foe] that is in the whole extent of the canal country of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

19 And these [enemies like flies and bees] shall come and shall rest all of them in the desolate and rugged valleys and deep ravines and in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes and on all the pastures.

20 In the same day [will the people of Judah be utterly stripped of belongings], the Lord will shave with the razor that is hired from the parts beyond the River [Euphrates]—even with the king of Assyria—[that razor will shave] the head and the hair of the legs, and it shall also consume the beard [leaving Judah with open shame and scorn].(C)

21 And [because of the desolation brought on by the invaders] in that day, a man will [be so poor that he will] keep alive only a young milk cow and two sheep.

22 And because of the abundance of milk that they will give, he will eat butter and curds, for [only] butter and curds and [wild] honey [no vegetables] shall everyone eat who is left in the land [these products provided from the extensive pastures and the plentiful wild flowers upon which the bees depend].

23 And in that day, in every place where there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels, there will be briers and thorns.

24 With arrows and with bows shall a man come [to hunt] there, because all the land will be briers and thorns.

25 And as for all the hills that were formerly cultivated with mattock and hoe, you will not go there for fear of briers and thorns; but they will become a place where oxen are let loose to pasture and where sheep tread.

The Sign of Immanuel

7 When Ahaz(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(B) of Aram(C) and Pekah(D) son of Remaliah(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

2 Now the house of David(F) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[a] Ephraim(G)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(H) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[b](I) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(J) 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(K) and don’t be afraid.(L) Do not lose heart(M) because of these two smoldering stubs(N) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(O) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(P) 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(Q) son have plotted(R) your ruin, saying, 6 “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” 7 Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(S)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,(T)
8 for the head of Aram is Damascus,(U)
    and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(V)
Within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be too shattered(W) to be a people.
9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(X)
    and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(Y) firm in your faith,(Z)
    you will not stand at all.’”(AA)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(AB) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(AC)”

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(AD)”

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(AE) Is it not enough(AF) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(AG) of my God(AH) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[c] a sign:(AI) The virgin[d](AJ) will conceive and give birth to a son,(AK) and[e] will call him Immanuel.[f](AL) 15 He will be eating curds(AM) and honey(AN) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(AO) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(AP) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(AQ) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(AR) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(AS)”

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(AT) the Lord will whistle(AU) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(AV) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(AW) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(AX) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(AY) the Lord will use(AZ) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(BA)—the king of Assyria(BB)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(BC) also.(BD) 21 In that day,(BE) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(BF) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(BG) and honey.(BH) 23 In that day,(BI) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[g](BJ) there will be only briers and thorns.(BK) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(BL) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(BM) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(BN) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(BO)
