Profezia contro Edom
34 (A)Accostatevi, nazioni, per ascoltare! Voi, popoli, state attenti! Ascolti la terra con ciò che la riempie, il mondo con tutto ciò che produce!
2 Poiché il Signore è indignato contro tutte le nazioni, è adirato contro tutti i loro eserciti; egli le vota allo sterminio, le dà in balìa alla strage.
3 I loro uccisi sono gettati via, i loro cadaveri esalano fetore e i monti si sciolgono nel loro sangue.
4 Tutto l’esercito del cielo si dissolve; i cieli sono arrotolati come un libro e tutto il loro esercito cade, come cade la foglia della vite, come cade il fogliame morto dal fico.
5 La mia spada si è inebriata nel cielo; ecco, essa sta per piombare su Edom, sul popolo che ho votato allo sterminio, per farne giustizia.
6 La spada del Signore è piena di sangue, è coperta di grasso, di sangue d’agnelli e di capri, di grasso di rognone di montoni; poiché il Signore fa un sacrificio a Bosra e una grande strage nel paese di Edom.
7 Cadono con quelli i bufali, i vitelli e i tori; il loro suolo è inebriato di sangue, la loro polvere è impregnata di grasso.
8 Poiché è il giorno della vendetta del Signore, l’anno della retribuzione per la causa di Sion.
9 I torrenti di Edom saranno mutati in pece e la sua polvere in zolfo; la sua terra diventerà pece ardente.
10 Non si spegnerà né notte né giorno, il fumo ne salirà per sempre[a]; di età in età rimarrà deserta, nessuno vi passerà mai più.
11 Il pellicano e il porcospino ne prenderanno possesso, la civetta e il corvo vi abiteranno; il Signore vi stenderà la corda della desolazione, il livello del deserto.
12 Quanto ai suoi nobili, non ce ne saranno più per proclamare un re; tutti i suoi prìncipi saranno ridotti a nulla.
13 Nei suoi palazzi cresceranno le spine; nelle sue fortezze le ortiche e i cardi; diventerà luogo di sciacalli, un recinto per gli struzzi.
14 Le bestie del deserto vi incontreranno i cani selvatici, le capre selvatiche vi chiameranno le compagne; là Lilit[b] farà la sua abitazione e vi troverà il suo luogo di riposo.
15 Là il serpente farà il suo nido, deporrà le sue uova, le coverà e raccoglierà i suoi piccoli sotto di sé; là si raccoglieranno gli avvoltoi, l’uno chiamando l’altro.
16 Cercate nel libro del Signore e leggete; nessuna di quelle bestie vi mancherà, nessuna sarà privata della sua compagna, poiché la sua bocca l’ha comandato e il suo soffio li radunerà.
17 Egli stesso ha tirato a sorte per essi, la sua mano ha diviso tra di loro con la corda il paese; quelli ne avranno il possesso per sempre, vi abiteranno di età in età.

34 Avvicinatevi, o nazioni, per ascoltare, o popoli, fate attenzione. Ascolti la terra e tutto ciò che è in essa, il mondo e tutto ciò che produce.
2 Poiché l'Eterno è adirato contro tutte le nazioni, è sdegnato contro tutti i loro eserciti, egli le vota allo sterminio, le abbandona al massacro.
3 I loro uccisi saranno gettati via, i loro cadaveri esaleranno fetore e i monti si scioglieranno col loro sangue.
4 Tutto l'esercito del cielo si dissolverà, i cieli si arrotoleranno come un libro, ma tutto il loro esercito cadrà, come cade la foglia dalla vite, come cade un frutto appassito dal fico.
5 Poiché la mia spada si è inebriata nel cielo, ecco essa sta per piombare su Edom, sul popolo che ho votato allo sterminio, per fare giustizia.

14 Le bestie del deserto s'incontreranno con le bestie che ululano, i capri si chiameranno l'un l'altro; vi si stabiliranno anche le civette e vi troveranno un luogo di riposo.
15 Vi farà il suo nido il serpente-freccia, vi deporrà le uova, le farà schiudere e raccoglierà i suoi piccoli alla sua ombra; là si raduneranno anche gli avvoltoi, ciascuno col suo compagno.
16 Cercate nel libro dell'Eterno e leggete: nessuno di essi mancherà, nessuno sarà privo del suo compagno, perché la sua bocca l'ha comandato e il suo Spirito li ha radunati.
17 Egli stesso ha gettato la sorte per essi, e la sua mano lo ha diviso tra loro con la linea per misurare; lo possederanno per sempre, vi abiteranno di generazione in generazione.

34 Come near, you nations and hear! And listen, you people! Let the Earth hear and all that is therein, the world and all that proceeds from it.
2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and wrath upon all their armies. He has destroyed them, delivered them to the slaughter.
3 And their slain shall be cast out. And their stink shall come up out of their bodies. And the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
4 And all the host of Heaven shall be dissolved. And the heavens shall be folded like a book. And all their hosts shall fall, as the leaf falls from the vine, and as it falls from the fig tree.
5 “For My sword shall be quenched in Heaven. Behold, it shall come down upon Edom, even upon the people of My curse, to judgment.”
6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood. It prospers with the fat, with the blood of the lambs and the goats, with the fat of the kidneys of the rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 And the wild oxen shall come down with them, and the heifers with the bulls. And their land shall be drenched with blood, and their dust made to prosper with fatness.
8 For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, the year of recompense for the judgment of Zion.
9 And its rivers shall be turned into tar, and its dust into brimstone. And its land shall be burning tar.
10 It shall not be quenched, night or day. Its smoke shall go up forever. It shall be desolate from generation to generation. No one shall pass through it, forever and ever.
11 But the pelican and the hedgehog shall possess it. And the great owl and the raven shall dwell in it. And He shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
12 Its nobles shall call to the kingdom and there shall be none. And all its princes shall be nothing.
13 And it shall bring forth thorns in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its strongholds. And it shall be a home for serpents, and a court for unclean birds.
14 Also, the wild beasts of the desert shall meet the jackals there. And the wild goat shall cry to his companion. And the night demon shall rest there and shall find for herself a quiet dwelling.
15 There shall the owl make her nest and lay and hatch and gather them under her shadow. There shall the vultures also be gathered, each one with her mate.
16 Seek in the Book of the LORD and read. None of these shall fail. None shall want for a mate. For His Mouth has Commanded, and His very Spirit has gathered them.
17 And He has cast the lot for them. And His Hand has divided to them by line. They shall possess it forever. From generation to generation shall they dwell in it.

Vengeance against Edom
34 Draw near, you nations, to hear;
and listen, you peoples.
Hear, earth and all who fill it,
world and all its offspring.
2 The Lord rages against all the nations,
and is angry with all their armies.
God is about to wipe them out
and has prepared them for slaughter.
3 Their dead will be cast out,
the stench of their corpses will rise,
and the mountains will melt from their blood.
4 All the stars of heaven will dissolve,
the skies will roll up like a scroll,
and all the stars will fall,
like a leaf withering from a vine,
like fruit from a fig tree.
5 When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,
it will descend upon Edom for judgment,
upon a people I have doomed for destruction.
6 The Lord has a sword covered with blood;
it is soaked with fat
from the blood of lambs and goats,
from the kidney fat of rams,
for the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 Wild oxen will fall with them,
steers with mighty bulls,
and their land will be drenched with blood;
its soil soaked with fat.
8 The Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of payback for Zion’s cause.
9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
its dust into sulfur,
and its land will become burning pitch.
10 Night and day won’t be extinguished;
its smoke will go up forever.
From generation to generation it will lie waste;
no one will ever pass through it again.
11 Screech owls and crows will possess it;
owls and ravens will live there.[a]
God will stretch over it the measuring line of chaos
and the plummet stone of emptiness over its officials.
12 No Kingdom There, they will call it,
and all its princes will disappear.
13 Thorns will grow up in its palaces,
weeds and brambles in its fortresses.
It will be a dwelling for jackals,
a home for ostriches.
14 Wildcats will meet hyenas,
the goat demon will call to his friends,
and there Lilith[b] will lurk
and find her resting place.
15 There the snake will nest and lay eggs
and brood and hatch in its shadow.
There too vultures will gather,
each with its mate.[c]
16 Consult the Lord’s scroll and read:
Not one of these will be missing;
none will lack its mate.
God’s own mouth has commanded;
God’s own spirit has gathered them.
17 God has cast the lot for them;
God’s hand allotted it to them with the measuring line.
They will possess it forever;
they will live in it from generation to generation.

pay attention, you peoples!(B)
Let the earth(C) hear, and all that is in it,
the world, and all that comes out of it!(D)
2 The Lord is angry with all nations;
his wrath(E) is on all their armies.
He will totally destroy[a](F) them,
he will give them over to slaughter.(G)
3 Their slain(H) will be thrown out,
their dead bodies(I) will stink;(J)
the mountains will be soaked with their blood.(K)
4 All the stars in the sky will be dissolved(L)
and the heavens rolled up(M) like a scroll;
all the starry host will fall(N)
like withered(O) leaves from the vine,
like shriveled figs from the fig tree.
5 My sword(P) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
see, it descends in judgment on Edom,(Q)
the people I have totally destroyed.(R)
6 The sword(S) of the Lord is bathed in blood,
it is covered with fat—
the blood of lambs and goats,
fat from the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice(T) in Bozrah(U)
and a great slaughter(V) in the land of Edom.
7 And the wild oxen(W) will fall with them,
the bull calves and the great bulls.(X)
Their land will be drenched with blood,(Y)
and the dust will be soaked with fat.
8 For the Lord has a day(Z) of vengeance,(AA)
a year of retribution,(AB) to uphold Zion’s cause.
9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her dust into burning sulfur;(AC)
her land will become blazing pitch!
10 It will not be quenched(AD) night or day;
its smoke will rise forever.(AE)
From generation to generation(AF) it will lie desolate;(AG)
no one will ever pass through it again.
11 The desert owl[b](AH) and screech owl[c] will possess it;
the great owl[d] and the raven(AI) will nest there.
God will stretch out over Edom(AJ)
the measuring line of chaos(AK)
and the plumb line(AL) of desolation.
12 Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom,
all her princes(AM) will vanish(AN) away.
13 Thorns(AO) will overrun her citadels,
nettles and brambles her strongholds.(AP)
She will become a haunt for jackals,(AQ)
a home for owls.(AR)
14 Desert creatures(AS) will meet with hyenas,(AT)
and wild goats will bleat to each other;
there the night creatures(AU) will also lie down
and find for themselves places of rest.
15 The owl will nest there and lay eggs,
she will hatch them, and care for her young
under the shadow of her wings;(AV)
there also the falcons(AW) will gather,
each with its mate.
16 Look in the scroll(AX) of the Lord and read:
None of these will be missing,(AY)
not one will lack her mate.
For it is his mouth(AZ) that has given the order,(BA)
and his Spirit will gather them together.
17 He allots their portions;(BB)
his hand distributes them by measure.
They will possess it forever
and dwell there from generation to generation.(BC)
