29 Guai ad Arièl, ad Arièl,
città dove pose il campo Davide!
Aggiungete anno ad anno,
si avvicendino i cicli festivi.
2 Io metterò alle strette Arièl,
ci saranno gemiti e lamenti.
Tu sarai per me come un vero Arièl,
3 io mi accamperò come Davide contro di te
e ti circonderò di trincee,
innalzerò contro di te un vallo.
4 Allora prostrata parlerai da terra
e dalla polvere saliranno fioche le tue parole;
sembrerà di un fantasma la tua voce dalla terra,
e dalla polvere la tua parola risuonerà come bisbiglio.
5 Sarà come polvere fine la massa dei tuoi oppressori
e come pula dispersa la massa dei tuoi tiranni.
Ma d'improvviso, subito,
6 dal Signore degli eserciti sarai visitata
con tuoni, rimbombi e rumore assordante,
con uragano e tempesta e fiamma di fuoco divoratore.
7 E sarà come un sogno,
come una visione notturna,
la massa di tutte le nazioni
che marciano su Arièl,
di quanti la attaccano
e delle macchine poste contro di essa.
8 Avverrà come quando un affamato sogna di mangiare,
ma si sveglia con lo stomaco vuoto;
come quando un assetato sogna di bere,
ma si sveglia stanco e con la gola riarsa:
così succederà alla folla di tutte le nazioni
che marciano contro il monte Sion.
9 Stupite pure così da restare sbalorditi,
chiudete gli occhi in modo da rimanere ciechi;
ubriacatevi ma non di vino,
barcollate ma non per effetto di bevande inebrianti.
10 Poiché il Signore ha versato su di voi
uno spirito di torpore,
ha chiuso i vostri occhi,
ha velato i vostri capi.
11 Per voi ogni visione sarà come le parole di un libro sigillato: si dà a uno che sappia leggere dicendogli: «Leggilo», ma quegli risponde: «Non posso, perché è sigillato». 12 Oppure si dà il libro a chi non sa leggere dicendogli: «Leggilo», ma quegli risponde: «Non so leggere».
Oracolo
13 Dice il Signore: «Poiché questo popolo
si avvicina a me solo a parole
e mi onora con le labbra,
mentre il suo cuore è lontano da me
e il culto che mi rendono
è un imparaticcio di usi umani,
14 perciò, eccomi, continuerò
a operare meraviglie e prodigi con questo popolo;
perirà la sapienza dei suoi sapienti
e si eclisserà l'intelligenza dei suoi intelligenti».
Il trionfo del diritto
15 Guai a quanti vogliono sottrarsi alla vista del Signore
per dissimulare i loro piani,
a coloro che agiscono nelle tenebre, dicendo:
«Chi ci vede? Chi ci conosce?».
16 Quanto siete perversi! Forse che il vasaio
è stimato pari alla creta?
Un oggetto può dire del suo autore:
«Non mi ha fatto lui»?
E un vaso può dire del vasaio: «Non capisce»?
17 Certo, ancora un pò
e il Libano si cambierà in un frutteto
e il frutteto sarà considerato una selva.
18 Udranno in quel giorno i sordi le parole di un libro;
liberati dall'oscurità e dalle tenebre,
gli occhi dei ciechi vedranno.
19 Gli umili si rallegreranno di nuovo nel Signore,
i più poveri gioiranno nel Santo di Israele.
20 Perché il tiranno non sarà più, sparirà il beffardo,
saranno eliminati quanti tramano iniquità,
21 quanti con la parola rendono colpevoli gli altri,
quanti alla porta tendono tranelli al giudice
e rovinano il giusto per un nulla.
22 Pertanto, dice alla casa di Giacobbe il Signore
che riscattò Abramo:
«D'ora in poi Giacobbe non dovrà più arrossire,
il suo viso non impallidirà più,
23 poiché vedendo il lavoro delle mie mani tra di loro,
santificheranno il mio nome,
santificheranno il Santo di Giacobbe
e temeranno il Dio di Israele.
24 Gli spiriti traviati apprenderanno la sapienza
e i brontoloni impareranno la lezione».

29 Khốn cho A-ri-ên, A-ri-ên,
Là thành Đa-vít đã đóng trại.
Năm này đến năm nọ cứ thêm lên;[a]
Cứ để cho lễ hội diễn ra.
2 Nhưng ta sẽ làm cho A-ri-ên buồn thảm;
Sẽ có khóc lóc, than vãn;
Với ta nó vẫn sẽ là A-ri-ên.[b]
3 Ta sẽ đóng trại bao vây[c] ngươi,
Lập đồn chống ngươi
Và đắp lũy chung quanh nghịch ngươi.
4 Ngươi sẽ bị hạ thấp. Ngươi sẽ nói từ dưới đất,
Lời nói ngươi bị hạ thấp từ bụi đất.
Tiếng ngươi sẽ giống như tiếng ma quái ra từ đất,
Lời nói ngươi thì thầm như bụi đất.
5 Nhưng đám đông kẻ thù[d] ngươi sẽ như bụi nhỏ,
Và đám đông tàn bạo sẽ như trấu tung bay.
Nó sẽ xảy đến thình lình, ngay tức khắc.
6 CHÚA Vạn Quân sẽ dùng
Sấm sét, động đất, tiếng động lớn,
Bão trốt, giông tố và ngọn lửa thiêu đốt mà phạt[e] nó.
7 Đám đông tất cả các nước đánh A-ri-ên,
Tất cả những kẻ tấn công, phá thành lũy
Và làm cho nó buồn thảm sẽ như chiêm bao,
Như khải tượng ban đêm.
8 Chúng nó sẽ như người đói mơ thấy mình ăn
Nhưng thức dậy mình vẫn đói;
Như người khát mơ thấy mình uống
Nhưng thức dậy bị kiệt sức, và mình vẫn khát.
Đám đông tất cả các nước
Tấn công núi Si-ôn cũng sẽ như vậy.
9 Hãy kinh ngạc và sững sờ.
Hãy làm cho mình mù lòa và không thấy.
Hãy say nhưng không phải vì rượu nho,
Hãy lảo đảo nhưng không phải vì rượu mạnh.
10 Vì CHÚA đã đổ thần ngủ mê trên các ngươi.
Ngài đã bịt mắt các ngươi, là các tiên tri,
Và trùm đầu các ngươi, là các vị tiên kiến.
11 Khải tượng về tất cả những điều này đối với các ngươi sẽ như lời của một cuốn sách bị niêm phong. Nếu đưa cho một người biết đọc và bảo: “Hãy đọc sách này,” người ấy sẽ nói: “Tôi không thể đọc được vì sách này đã niêm phong.” 12 Và nếu đưa cuốn sách cho một người không biết đọc rồi bảo: “Hãy đọc sách này,” người ấy sẽ nói: “Tôi không biết đọc.”
13 CHÚA phán:
“Vì dân này đến gần Ta[f] bằng miệng;
Tôn vinh Ta[g] bằng môi
Nhưng lòng thì xa cách Ta.
Sự chúng nó kính sợ Ta
Chỉ là điều răn của loài người, do loài người dạy bảo. [h]
14 Cho nên, này một lần nữa, Ta sẽ làm cho dân này kinh ngạc,
Từ kinh ngạc này đến kinh ngạc khác.
Sự khôn ngoan của người khôn ngoan sẽ tiêu mất,
Sự thông thái của người thông thái sẽ bị giấu kín.
15 Khốn cho những kẻ giấu mưu luận mình kín
Khỏi CHÚA.
Chúng làm việc trong bóng tối và nói:
Ai sẽ thấy, ai sẽ biết chúng ta?”
16 Các ngươi thật ngược ngạo.
Thợ gốm mà coi như đất sét!
Đồ vật có nên nói với người làm ra mình:
“Người không làm ra tôi,”
Hay đồ gốm nói với thợ gốm rằng:
“Người không hiểu.”
17 Có phải ít lâu nữa Li-ban sẽ nên ruộng phì nhiêu
Và ruộng phì nhiêu được coi như rừng rậm hay sao?
18 Vào ngày ấy, kẻ điếc sẽ nghe lời trong sách,
Con mắt kẻ mù nơi tối tăm
Sẽ thấy.
19 Những kẻ khốn cùng sẽ một lần nữa vui mừng trong CHÚA.
Những kẻ nghèo khổ giữa loài người sẽ hân hoan trong Đấng Thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên.
20 Vì những kẻ bạo ngược sẽ hết,
Những kẻ chế nhạo sẽ không còn
Và tất cả những kẻ sẵn sàng[i] làm ác đều sẽ bị đốn ngã.
21 Những kẻ dùng lời nói làm cho người ta bị kết án;[j]
Những kẻ gài bẫy người thưa kiện tại toà;[k]
Và những kẻ dùng lý do giả dối[l] gạt bỏ sự công bình cho những người vô tội.
22 Cho nên, CHÚA, Đấng cứu chuộc Áp-ra-ham phán về nhà Gia-cốp thế này:
“Gia-cốp sẽ không còn hổ thẹn nữa,
Mặt người sẽ không còn tái xanh nữa.
23 Vì khi người thấy con cái mình ở giữa mình,
Tức là công việc của tay Ta,
Thì chúng sẽ tôn thánh danh Ta;
Tôn thánh Đấng Thánh của Gia-cốp
Và sẽ kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên.
24 Những kẻ có tâm thần lầm lạc sẽ hiểu biết
Và những kẻ hay than phiền sẽ được giáo huấn.”

29 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.
2 Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel.
3 And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.
5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
6 Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.
7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
10 For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.
22 Therefore thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.
23 But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

Woe to David’s City
29 Woe(A) to you, Ariel, Ariel,(B)
the city(C) where David settled!
Add year to year
and let your cycle of festivals(D) go on.
2 Yet I will besiege Ariel;(E)
she will mourn and lament,(F)
she will be to me like an altar hearth.[a](G)
3 I will encamp against you on all sides;
I will encircle(H) you with towers
and set up my siege works(I) against you.
4 Brought low, you will speak from the ground;
your speech will mumble(J) out of the dust.(K)
Your voice will come ghostlike(L) from the earth;
out of the dust your speech will whisper.(M)
5 But your many enemies will become like fine dust,(N)
the ruthless(O) hordes like blown chaff.(P)
Suddenly,(Q) in an instant,
6 the Lord Almighty will come(R)
with thunder(S) and earthquake(T) and great noise,
with windstorm and tempest(U) and flames of a devouring fire.(V)
7 Then the hordes of all the nations(W) that fight against Ariel,(X)
that attack her and her fortress and besiege her,
will be as it is with a dream,(Y)
with a vision in the night—
8 as when a hungry person dreams of eating,
but awakens(Z) hungry still;
as when a thirsty person dreams of drinking,
but awakens faint and thirsty still.(AA)
So will it be with the hordes of all the nations
that fight against Mount Zion.(AB)
9 Be stunned and amazed,(AC)
blind yourselves and be sightless;(AD)
be drunk,(AE) but not from wine,(AF)
stagger,(AG) but not from beer.
10 The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep:(AH)
He has sealed your eyes(AI) (the prophets);(AJ)
he has covered your heads (the seers).(AK)
11 For you this whole vision(AL) is nothing but words sealed(AM) in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I can’t; it is sealed.” 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I don’t know how to read.”
13 The Lord says:
“These people(AN) come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,(AO)
but their hearts are far from me.(AP)
Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been taught.[b](AQ)
14 Therefore once more I will astound these people
with wonder upon wonder;(AR)
the wisdom of the wise(AS) will perish,
the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.(AT)”
15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide(AU) their plans from the Lord,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us?(AV) Who will know?”(AW)
16 You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!(AX)
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed(AY) it,
“You did not make me”?
Can the pot say to the potter,(AZ)
“You know nothing”?(BA)
17 In a very short time,(BB) will not Lebanon(BC) be turned into a fertile field(BD)
and the fertile field seem like a forest?(BE)
18 In that day(BF) the deaf(BG) will hear the words of the scroll,
and out of gloom and darkness(BH)
the eyes of the blind will see.(BI)
19 Once more the humble(BJ) will rejoice in the Lord;
the needy(BK) will rejoice in the Holy One(BL) of Israel.
20 The ruthless(BM) will vanish,(BN)
the mockers(BO) will disappear,
and all who have an eye for evil(BP) will be cut down—
21 those who with a word make someone out to be guilty,
who ensnare the defender in court(BQ)
and with false testimony(BR) deprive the innocent of justice.(BS)
22 Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed(BT) Abraham,(BU) says to the descendants of Jacob:
“No longer will Jacob be ashamed;(BV)
no longer will their faces grow pale.(BW)
23 When they see among them their children,(BX)
the work of my hands,(BY)
they will keep my name holy;(BZ)
they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One(CA) of Jacob,
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24 Those who are wayward(CB) in spirit will gain understanding;(CC)
those who complain will accept instruction.”(CD)
