La caduta di Babilonia
21 Oracolo sul deserto del mare.
Come i turbini che si scatenano nel Negheb,
così egli viene dal deserto, da una terra orribile.
2 Una visione angosciosa mi fu mostrata:
il saccheggiatore che saccheggia,
il distruttore che distrugge.
Salite, o Elamiti,
assediate, o Medi!
Io faccio cessare ogni gemito.
3 Per questo i miei reni tremano,
mi hanno colto i dolori come di una partoriente;
sono troppo sconvolto per udire,
troppo sbigottito per vedere.
4 Smarrito è il mio cuore,
la costernazione mi invade;
il crepuscolo tanto desiderato
diventa il mio terrore.
5 Si prepara la tavola,
si stende la tovaglia,
si mangia, si beve.
«Alzatevi, o capi,
ungete gli scudi!».
6 Poiché così mi ha detto il Signore:
«Và, metti una sentinella
che annunzi quanto vede.
7 Se vede cavalleria,
coppie di cavalieri,
gente che cavalca asini,
gente che cavalca cammelli,
osservi attentamente,
con grande attenzione».
8 La vedetta ha gridato:
«Al posto di osservazione, Signore,
io sto sempre, tutto il giorno,
e nel mio osservatorio
sto in piedi, tutta la notte.
9 Ecco, arriva una schiera di cavalieri,
coppie di cavalieri».
Essi esclamano e dicono: «E' caduta,
è caduta Babilonia!
Tutte le statue dei suoi dèi
sono a terra, in frantumi».
10 O popolo mio, calpestato,
che ho trebbiato come su un'aia,
ciò che ho udito
dal Signore degli eserciti,
Dio di Israele,
a voi ho annunziato.
Sull'Idumea
11 Oracolo sull'Idumea.
Mi gridano da Seir:
«Sentinella, quanto resta della notte?
Sentinella, quanto resta della notte?».
12 La sentinella risponde:
«Viene il mattino, poi anche la notte;
se volete domandare, domandate,
convertitevi, venite!».
Contro gli Arabi
13 Oracolo sull'Arabia.
Nel bosco, nell'Arabia, passate la notte,
carovane di Dedan;
14 andando incontro agli assetati,
portate acqua.
Abitanti del paese di Tema,
presentatevi ai fuggiaschi con pane per loro.
15 Perché essi fuggono di fronte alle spade,
di fronte alla spada affilata,
di fronte all'arco teso,
di fronte al furore della battaglia.
16 Poiché mi ha detto il Signore: «Ancora un anno, contato alla maniera degli anni di un salariato, e scomparirà tutta la potenza gloriosa di Kedàr. 17 E il numero degli archi dei prodi di Kedàr resterà molto esiguo, perché il Signore Dio di Israele ha parlato».

Gods profetie over Babel
21 Dit is Gods profetie over Babel.
Het onheil komt als een stormwind over u heen vanuit de angstaanjagende woestijn, als een wervelwind uit de Negev-woestijn. 2 Ik zie een dreigend visioen, het is vreselijk om te zien! God vertelt mij wat Hij gaat doen. Ik zie u, geplunderd en vernietigd. Elamieten en Meden zullen deel hebben aan de overwinning. Babel zal vallen en het gekerm van de volken die het onderdrukte, zal ophouden. 3 Mijn maag komt in opstand en brandt van pijn, pijn als van een barende vrouw. Mijn benen worden slap als ik hoor wat God van plan is, ik krimp ineen, verblind door angst. 4 De schrik overvalt mij en mijn hart bonst als een razende. De schemering, waarvan ik vroeger zo genoot, maakt mij nu bang.
5 Kijk! Zij maken alles klaar voor een feestelijke maaltijd! Ze dekken de tafels met voedsel en schuiven hun zetels bij om te gaan eten. Snel, snel, grijp uw schilden en maak u klaar voor de strijd! U wordt aangevallen!
6,7 Ondertussen (in mijn visioen) had de Here mij gezegd: ‘Zet een uitkijk op de stadsmuur en laat hij melden wat hij ziet. Als hij een groep mannen ziet komen die twee-aan-twee op ezels en kamelen rijden, zeg dan tegen hem: “Dat zijn ze, houd ze goed in de gaten!” ’
8,9 En ik zette een uitkijk op de muur en uiteindelijk schreeuwde hij: ‘Heer, ik heb dag en nacht op wacht gestaan! En nu eindelijk, kijk! Daar komen zij die twee-aan-twee rijden!’ Toen hoorde ik een stem die riep: ‘Babel is gevallen en alle afgoden van Babel liggen gebroken op de grond.’ 10 Och, mijn geslagen en vertrapte volk. Ik heb u alles verteld wat de Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, tegen mij heeft gezegd.
11 Dit is Gods profetie over Edom. Iemand uit uw midden blijft naar mij roepen: ‘Wachter, hoe ver is de nacht gevorderd? Wachter, hoe ver is de nacht gevorderd?’ 12 En de wachter antwoordt: ‘De ochtend breekt aan, maar maar dan komt er weer een nieuwe nacht. Keer terug naar God, dan kan ik u beter nieuws bezorgen. Zoek naar Hem, keer daarna terug en vraag het mij opnieuw!’
13 Dit is Gods profetie over Arabië.
Karavanen van de Dedanieten, u zult u verschuilen in de wouden van Arabië. 14 Volk van Tema, breng deze dorstige vluchtelingen voedsel en water. 15 Zij zijn gevlucht voor getrokken zwaarden, scherpe pijlen en de verschrikkingen van de oorlog! 16 ‘Binnen een jaar,’ zegt de Here, ‘zal er een einde komen aan de overmacht van hun vijand, de machtige stam van Kedar. 17 Slechts enkelen van hun gevreesde boogschutters zullen overblijven.’ De Here, de God van Israël, heeft gesproken.

21 The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.
2 A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.
3 Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
4 My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure hath he turned into fear unto me.
5 Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.
6 For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.
7 And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:
8 And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:
9 And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
10 O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
11 The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
12 The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.
13 The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim.
14 The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled.
15 For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.
16 For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:
17 And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the Lord God of Israel hath spoken it.

The Fall of Babylon Proclaimed
21 The [a]burden against the Wilderness of the Sea.
As (A)whirlwinds in the South pass through,
So it comes from the desert, from a terrible land.
2 A distressing vision is declared to me;
(B)The treacherous dealer deals treacherously,
And the plunderer plunders.
(C)Go up, O Elam!
Besiege, O Media!
All its sighing I have made to cease.
3 Therefore (D)my loins are filled with pain;
(E)Pangs have taken hold of me, like the pangs of a woman in labor.
I was [b]distressed when I heard it;
I was dismayed when I saw it.
4 My heart wavered, fearfulness frightened me;
(F)The night for which I longed He turned into fear for me.
5 (G)Prepare the table,
Set a watchman in the tower,
Eat and drink.
Arise, you princes,
Anoint the shield!
6 For thus has the Lord said to me:
“Go, set a watchman,
Let him declare what he sees.”
7 And he saw a chariot with a pair of horsemen,
A chariot of donkeys, and a chariot of camels,
And he listened earnestly with great care.
8 [c]Then he cried, “A lion, my Lord!
I stand continually on the (H)watchtower in the daytime;
I have sat at my post every night.
9 And look, here comes a chariot of men with a pair of horsemen!”
Then he answered and said,
(I)“Babylon is fallen, is fallen!
And (J)all the carved images of her gods
He has broken to the ground.”
10 (K)Oh, my threshing and the grain of my floor!
That which I have heard from the Lord of hosts,
The God of Israel,
I have declared to you.
Proclamation Against Edom
11 (L)The [d]burden against Dumah.
He calls to me out of (M)Seir,
“Watchman, what of the night?
Watchman, what of the night?”
12 The watchman said,
“The morning comes, and also the night.
If you will inquire, inquire;
Return! Come back!”
Proclamation Against Arabia
13 (N)The [e]burden against Arabia.
In the forest in Arabia you will lodge,
O you traveling companies (O)of Dedanites.
14 O inhabitants of the land of Tema,
Bring water to him who is thirsty;
With their bread they met him who fled.
15 For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword,
From the bent bow, and from the distress of war.
16 For thus the Lord has said to me: “Within a year, (P)according to the year of a hired man, all the glory of (Q)Kedar will fail; 17 and the remainder of the number of archers, the mighty men of the people of Kedar, will be diminished; for the Lord God of Israel has spoken it.”
