10 Vai de cei ce decretează hotărâri nelegiuite,
de cei ce scriu porunci ce asupresc,
2 ca să-i priveze de drepturi pe cei nevoiaşi
şi să răpească dreptatea celor asupriţi din poporul Meu,
făcând astfel din văduve prada lor
şi jefuindu-i pe orfani.
3 Ce veţi face în ziua pedepsei,
în mijlocul nenorocirii care va veni din depărtări?
La cine veţi fugi după ajutor?
Unde vă veţi lăsa bogăţiile?
4 Unii se vor pleca printre prizonieri
sau vor cădea printre cei ucişi.
Cu toate acestea, mânia Lui nu s-a potolit,
iar mâna Sa este încă întinsă.“
Judecata Domnului asupra Asiriei
5 „Vai de asirian, nuiaua mâniei Mele,
cel care ţine în mâna lui ciomagul furiei Mele!
6 L-am trimis împotriva unui neam lipsit de evlavie
şi i-am poruncit să meargă împotriva poporului pe care sunt mâniat,
ca să ia pradă, să-şi însuşească captură
şi să-l calce în picioare ca pe noroiul de pe drum.
7 Dar nu aceasta vrea el,
nu acest lucru îl are el în minte;
ci el vrea numai să nimicească,
să şteargă de pe pământ neamuri nu puţine la număr.
8 El zice: «Oare nu sunt conducătorii mei toţi regi?
9 Oare n-a păţit Calno asemenea Carchemişului?
Nu este Hamatul asemenea Arpadului?
Sau Samaria asemenea Damascului?
10 Aşa cum mâna mea a pus stăpânire peste împărăţiile idolilor
ale căror chipuri erau mai mari decât cele din Ierusalim şi Samaria,
11 aşa cum am făcut Samariei şi idolilor ei,
tot aşa voi face şi Ierusalimului şi idolilor lui!»“
12 „Când Stăpânul Îşi va fi îndeplinit toată lucrarea împotriva muntelui Sion şi împotriva Ierusalimului, va spune: «Îl voi pedepsi pe împăratul Asiriei pentru rodul inimii lui îngâmfate şi pentru trufia privirii lui semeţe. 13 Pentru că el zice:
‘Prin puterea mâinilor mele am făcut aceasta
şi prin înţelepciunea mea, căci sunt priceput.
Am dat la o parte hotarele popoarelor
şi le-am jefuit de bogăţii
şi, ca un viteaz, le-am subjugat domnitorii.
14 Mâna mea a găsit, ca pe un cuib,
bogăţia popoarelor!
Ca unul care adună ouăle uitate,
aşa am adunat tot pământul
şi nimeni n-a mişcat vreo aripă,
n-a deschis gura,
nici n-a ciripit!’
15 Se va lăuda oare securea înaintea celui ce o mânuieşte?
Se va înălţa oare ferăstrăul mai presus de cel ce-l foloseşte?
Ca şi cum nuiaua l-ar ridica pe cel ce o ridicã,
sau ca şi cum toiagul ar ridica pe cel ce nu este din lemn!»
16 De aceea Cel Suveran, Domnul Oştirilor,
va trimite o boală nimicitoare printre războinicii lui puternici,
iar între aleşii lui va izbucni un pârjol ca cel al focului.
17 Lumina lui Israel va deveni un foc,
iar Sfântul său, o flacără;
într-o singură zi ea va arde
şi va mistui toţi spinii şi mărăcinii lui.
18 Splendoarea pădurii lui şi pământurile lui roditoare,
vor fi nimicite cu desăvârşire
şi vor ajunge ca un bolnav pe moarte.
19 Rămăşiţa copacilor din pădurea sa va fi atât de mică
încât şi un copil ar putea scrie numărul lor.
Rămăşiţa lui Israel
20 În ziua aceea rămăşiţa lui Israel şi supravieţuitorii Casei lui Iacov nu se vor mai sprijini pe cel ce îi lovea, ci se vor sprijini, cu adevărat, pe Domnul, Sfântul lui Israel. 21 O rămăşiţă se va întoarce[a] – rămăşiţa lui Iacov – la Dumnezeul cel Puternic. 22 Chiar dacă poporul tău, Israele, ar fi ca nisipul mării, totuşi numai o rămăşiţă din el se va întoarce. Distrugerea este hotărâtă, făcând să se reverse astfel dreptatea. 23 Căci Stăpânul, Domnul Oştirilor, va duce la îndeplinire în toată ţara sentinţa hotărâtă.
24 De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Stăpânul, Domnul Oştirilor: «Poporul Meu care locuieşti în Sion, nu te teme de asirieni, când ei te bat cu nuiaua şi îşi înalţă ciomagul împotriva ta, aşa cum au făcut şi egiptenii, 25 pentru că, foarte curând, indignarea Mea împotriva ta va înceta şi furia Mea va fi îndreptată spre distrugerea lor.» 26 Domnul Oştirilor îi va bate cu un bici, aşa cum l-a bătut pe Midian la stânca Oreb şi Îşi va înălţa toiagul asupra mării, aşa cum a făcut în Egipt. 27 În ziua aceea îţi va fi luată povara lor de pe umeri şi jugul lor de pe gât; jugul va fi zdrobit din cauza grăsimii[b].
28 A ajuns la Aiat,
a trecut prin Migron,
iar la Micmaş şi-a lăsat lucrurile.
29 Au trecut trecătoarea
şi au zis: «La Gheva vom înnopta!»
Rama tremură,
iar Ghiva lui Saul fuge.
30 Ţipă tare, fiica Galimului!
Ia aminte, Laişa!
Sărmanul de tine, Anatot!
31 Madmena fuge,
locuitorii Ghebimului caută scăpare.
32 Astăzi va face un nou popas la Nob,
de unde va ameninţa cu pumnul muntele fiicei Sionului,
dealul Ierusalimului.
33 Iată, Stăpânul, Domnul Oştirilor,
taie crăcile cu o mare putere.
Cei mai înalţi copaci vor fi tăiaţi,
cei mândri vor fi doborâţi.
34 El va tăia desişul pădurii cu securea,
şi Libanul va cădea sub loviturile Celui Măreţ.

Assyria Shall Be Broken
10 “Woe to those who (A)decree unrighteous decrees,
Who write misfortune,
Which they have prescribed
2 To rob the needy of justice,
And to take what is right from the poor of My people,
That widows may be their prey,
And that they may rob the fatherless.
3 (B)What will you do in (C)the day of punishment,
And in the desolation which will come from (D)afar?
To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your glory?
4 Without Me they shall bow down among the (E)prisoners,
And they shall fall [a]among the slain.”
(F)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.
Arrogant Assyria Also Judged
5 “Woe to Assyria, (G)the rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.
6 I will send him against (H)an ungodly nation,
And against the people of My wrath
I will (I)give him charge,
To seize the spoil, to take the prey,
And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 (J)Yet he does not mean so,
Nor does his heart think so;
But it is in his heart to destroy,
And cut off not a few nations.
8 (K)For he says,
‘Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Is not (L)Calno (M)like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad?
Is not Samaria (N)like Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 As I have done to Samaria and her idols,
Shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?’ ”
12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has [b]performed all His work (O)on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say, (P)“I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”
13 (Q)For he says:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
And by my wisdom, for I am prudent;
Also I have removed the boundaries of the people,
And have robbed their treasuries;
So I have put down the inhabitants like a [c]valiant man.
14 (R)My hand has found like a nest the riches of the people,
And as one gathers eggs that are left,
I have gathered all the earth;
And there was no one who moved his wing,
Nor opened his mouth with even a peep.”
15 Shall (S)the ax boast itself against him who chops with it?
Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it?
As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord, the [d]Lord of hosts,
Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory
He will kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.
17 So the Light of Israel will be for a fire,
And his Holy One for a flame;
(T)It will burn and devour
His thorns and his briers in one day.
18 And it will consume the glory of his forest and of (U)his fruitful field,
Both soul and body;
And they will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 Then the rest of the trees of his forest
Will be so few in number
That a child may write them.
The Returning Remnant of Israel
20 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
(V)Will never again depend on him who [e]defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the (W)Mighty God.
22 (X)For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea,
(Y)A remnant of them will return;
The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
23 (Z)For the Lord God of hosts
Will make a determined end
In the midst of all the land.
24 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O My people, who dwell in Zion, (AA)do not be afraid of the Assyrian. He shall strike you with a rod and lift up his staff against you, in the manner of (AB)Egypt. 25 For yet a very little while (AC)and the indignation will cease, as will My anger in their destruction.” 26 And the Lord of hosts will [f]stir up (AD)a scourge for him like the slaughter of (AE)Midian at the rock of Oreb; (AF)as His rod was on the sea, so will He lift it up in the manner of Egypt.
27 It shall come to pass in that day
That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder,
And his yoke from your neck,
And the yoke will be destroyed because of (AG)the anointing oil.
28 He has come to Aiath,
He has passed Migron;
At Michmash he has attended to his equipment.
29 They have gone [g]along (AH)the ridge,
They have taken up lodging at Geba.
Ramah is afraid,
(AI)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 [h]Lift up your voice,
O daughter (AJ)of Gallim!
Cause it to be heard as far as (AK)Laish—
[i]O poor Anathoth!
31 (AL)Madmenah has fled,
The inhabitants of Gebim seek refuge.
32 As yet he will remain (AM)at Nob that day;
He will (AN)shake his fist at the mount of (AO)the daughter of Zion,
The hill of Jerusalem.
33 Behold, the Lord,
The Lord of hosts,
Will lop off the bough with terror;
(AP)Those of high stature will be hewn down,
And the haughty will be humbled.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron,
And Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

and the writers who (B)keep writing oppression,
2 to turn aside the needy from justice
and (C)to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
3 What will you do on (D)the day of punishment,
in the ruin that will come (E)from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
and where will you leave your wealth?
4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
or fall among the slain.
(F)For all this his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is stretched out still.
Judgement on Arrogant Assyria
5 Ah, Assyria, (G)the rod of my anger;
the staff in their hands is my fury!
6 Against a (H)godless nation I send him,
and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take (I)spoil and seize plunder,
and to (J)tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 But he (K)does not so intend,
and his heart does not so think;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
and to cut off nations not a few;
8 for he says:
(L)“Are not my commanders all kings?
9 (M)Is not (N)Calno like (O)Carchemish?
Is not (P)Hamath like (Q)Arpad?
(R)Is not (S)Samaria like Damascus?
10 As my hand has reached to (T)the kingdoms of the idols,
whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and (U)her idols
(V)as I have done to Samaria and her images?”
12 (W)When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, (X)he[a] will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. 13 (Y)For he says:
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
and plunder their treasures;
like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
14 My hand has found like a nest
the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
or opened the mouth or chirped.”
15 Shall (Z)the axe boast over him who hews with it,
or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord God of hosts
will send wasting sickness among his (AA)stout warriors,
and under his glory (AB)a burning will be kindled,
like the burning of fire.
17 (AC)The light of Israel will become a fire,
and (AD)his Holy One a flame,
and (AE)it will burn and devour
his thorns and briers (AF)in one day.
18 The glory of (AG)his forest and of his (AH)fruitful land
the Lord will destroy, both soul and body,
and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few
that a child can write them down.
The Remnant of Israel Will Return
20 (AI)In that day (AJ)the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more (AK)lean on him who struck them, but (AL)will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, (AM)to the mighty God. 22 (AN)For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, (AO)only a remnant of them will return. (AP)Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.
24 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O my people, (AQ)who dwell in Zion, (AR)be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as (AS)the Egyptians did. 25 For (AT)in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. 26 And (AU)the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck (AV)Midian (AW)at the rock of Oreb. the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
32 This very day he will halt at (BI)Nob;

at the mount of (BJ)the daughter of Zion,
the hill of Jerusalem.
33 Behold, the Lord God of hosts
(BK)will lop (BL)the boughs with terrifying power;
the great in height will be hewn down,
and the lofty will be brought low.
34 He will cut down (BM)the thickets of the forest with an axe,

To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth?
4 They will only bow down under the prisoners,
and will fall under the slain.
For all this his anger is not turned away,
but his hand is stretched out still.
5 Alas Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation! 6 I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people who anger me I will give him a command to take the plunder and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 However, he doesn’t mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations. 8 For he says, “Aren’t all of my princes kings? 9 Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Isn’t Hamath like Arpad? Isn’t Samaria like Damascus?” 10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, 11 shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
12 Therefore it will happen that when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his arrogant looks. 13 For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. 14 My hand has found the riches of the peoples like a nest, and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned, I have gathered all the earth. There was no one who moved their wing, or that opened their mouth, or chirped.”
15 Should an ax brag against him who chops with it? Should a saw exalt itself above him who saws with it? As if a rod should lift those who lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up someone who is not wood. 16 Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. 17 The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. 18 He will consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints. 19 The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number.
20 It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return.
