The Worship God Demands

²⁴ The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands,^(A)

⁴⁸ Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands;^[a] as the prophet says,^(A)

³⁴ But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,^{(A) 35} or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

²⁷ “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built!^(A)

⁵ “Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? ⁶ I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. ⁷ Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders^[a] of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’^(A)

²⁰ Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you^[a] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”^{(A) 21} Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you^[b] will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.^(B)

²¹ and whoever swears by the sanctuary swears by it and by the one who dwells in it, ²² and whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it.^(A)
