The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

^24 (A)The God who made the world and everything in it, being ^(B)Lord of heaven and earth, ^(C)does not live in temples made by man,^[a]

^48 (A)Yet the Most High does not dwell ^(B)in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

³⁴ But I say to you, ^(A)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for ^(B)it is the throne of God, ³⁵ or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is ^(C)the city of the great King.

²⁷ “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, ^(A)heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!

⁵ “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: ^(A)Would you build me a house to dwell in? ⁶ I have not lived in a house ^(B)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about ^(C)in a tent for my dwelling. ⁷ In all places where ^(D)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with ^(E)any of the judges^[a] of Israel, whom I commanded ^(F)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’

^20 (A)Our fathers worshiped on ^(B)this mountain, but you say that ^(C)in Jerusalem is ^(D)the place where people ought to worship.” ²¹ Jesus said to her, ^(E)“Woman, believe me, ^(F)the hour is coming when ^(G)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

²¹ And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by ^(A)him who dwells in it. ²² And whoever swears by ^(B)heaven swears by ^(C)the throne of God and by ^(D)him who sits upon it.
