^5 (A)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am ^(B)a jealous God, ^(C)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

²⁷ “Therefore, ^(A)son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by ^(B)dealing treacherously with me. ²⁸ For when I had brought them into the land that ^(C)I swore to give them, then wherever they saw ^(D)any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented ^(E)the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings.

^16 (A)by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always ^(B)to fill up the measure of their sins. But ^(C)wrath has come upon them at last!^[a]

³¹ Thus you witness against yourselves that you are ^(A)sons of those who murdered the prophets. ^32 (B)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, ^(C)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to ^(D)hell? ^34 (E)Therefore ^(F)I send you ^(G)prophets and wise men and ^(H)scribes, ^(I)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(J)some you will ^(K)flog in your synagogues and ^(L)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(M)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(N)Abel to the blood of ^(O)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(P)the sanctuary and ^(Q)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(R)all these things will come upon this generation.

⁸ To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because ^(A)we have sinned against you.

⁶ if he ^(A)does not eat upon the mountains or ^(B)lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, ^(C)does not defile his neighbor's wife ^(D)or approach ^(E)a woman in her time of menstrual impurity,
