¹⁷ “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,^(A) following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,^(B) rats^(C) and other unclean things—they will meet their end^(D) together with the one they follow,” declares the Lord.

⁷ And the pig,^(A) though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.

²⁷ When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

² When Jesus got out of the boat,^(A) a man with an impure spirit^(B) came from the tombs to meet him. ³ This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. ⁴ For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. ⁵ Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men^(A)

²⁸ When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,^[a] two demon-possessed^(B) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.

¹⁴ Then I said, “Not so, Sovereign Lord!^(A) I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead^(B) or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth.^(C)”
