⁸ The way of peace they do not know,
    and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
    ^(A)no one who treads on them knows peace.

^20 (A)But the wicked are like the tossing sea;
    for it cannot be quiet,
    and its waters toss up mire and dirt.
^21 (B)There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

⁷⁹ to ^(A)give light to ^(B)those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into ^(C)the way of ^(D)peace.”

¹⁷ and ^(A)the way of peace they have not known.”

6 ^(A)“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
    and to those who feel secure on ^(B)the mountain of Samaria,
^(C)the notable men of ^(D)the first of the nations,
    to whom the house of Israel comes!
² Pass over to ^(E)Calneh, and see,
    and from there go to ^(F)Hamath the great;
    then go down to ^(G)Gath of the Philistines.
^(H)Are you better than these kingdoms?
    Or is their territory greater than your territory,
^3 (I)O you who put far away the day of disaster
    ^(J)and bring near the seat of violence?

4 ^(A)Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
    for ^(B)the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
    and ^(C)no knowledge of God in the land;
^2 (D)there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
    they break all bounds, and ^(E)bloodshed follows bloodshed.

5 ^(A)Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,
    look and take note!
Search her squares to see
    ^(B)if you can find a man,
one who does justice
    and seeks truth,
^(C)that I may pardon her.

^14 (A)Justice is turned back,
    and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
    and uprightness cannot enter.
¹⁵ Truth is lacking,
    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.
