²¹ They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow for them from the rock;
    he split open the rock, and the water gushed out.^(A)

¹⁹ I am about to do a new thing;
    now it springs forth; do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.^(A)
20 The wild animals will honor me,
    the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,^(B)

⁶ then the lame shall leap like a deer,
    and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness
    and streams in the desert;^(A)
7 the burning sand shall become a pool
    and the thirsty ground springs of water;
the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp;^[a]
    the grass shall become reeds and rushes.^(B)
