48 Hear this, O house of Jacob,
    who are called by the name of Israel
    and who came forth from the loins^[a] of Judah,
who swear by the name of the Lord
    and invoke the God of Israel
    but not in truth or right.^(A)

² and if you swear, “As the Lord lives!”
    in truth, in justice, and in uprightness,
then nations shall be blessed^[a] by you,^[b]
    and by you^[c] they shall boast.^(A)

²⁶ “Bless God in the great congregation,
    the Lord, O you who are of Israel’s fountain!”^(A)

² Although they say, “As the Lord lives,”
    yet they swear falsely.^(A)

¹⁶ Then whoever invokes a blessing in the land
    shall bless by the God of faithfulness,
and whoever takes an oath in the land
    shall swear by the God of faithfulness,
because the former troubles are forgotten
    and are hidden from my sight.^(A)

²⁸ So Israel lives in safety,
    untroubled is Jacob’s abode^[a]
in a land of grain and wine,
    where the heavens drop down dew.^(A)
