⁴ The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.^(A) She held a golden cup^(B) in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.^{(C) 5} The name written on her forehead was a mystery:^(D)

⁶ I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people,^(G) the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.

When I saw her, I was greatly astonished.

⁸ But Elymas the sorcerer^(A) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul^(B) from the faith.^{(C) 9} Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,^(D) looked straight at Elymas and said, ¹⁰ “You are a child of the devil^(E) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?^{(F) 11} Now the hand of the Lord is against you.^(G) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”^(H)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. ¹² When the proconsul^(I) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

⁷ The king summoned the enchanters,^(A) astrologers^[a](B) and diviners.^(C) Then he said to these wise^(D) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,^(E) and he will be made the third^(F) highest ruler in the kingdom.”^(G)

⁸ Then all the king’s wise men^(H) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.^{(I) 9} So King Belshazzar became even more terrified^(J) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
