¹⁶ “Come near^(A) me and listen^(B) to this:

⁴ This is what the Lord says to Israel:

⁴ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit^(A) and began to speak in other tongues^[a](B) as the Spirit enabled them.

⁵ Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing^(C) Jews from every nation under heaven. ⁶ When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. ⁷ Utterly amazed,^(D) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?^{(E) 8} Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

³ When you ask, you do not receive,^(A) because you ask with wrong motives,^(B) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

²⁰ “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues^(A) or at the temple,^(B) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.^(C)

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(B) 38} Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^{[a](F) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)
