13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly (A)that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and (B)they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve (C)I will judge; afterward (D)they shall come out with great possessions. 15 Now as for you, (E)you shall [a]go (F)to your fathers in peace; (G)you shall be buried at a good old age. 16 But (H)in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity (I)of the Amorites (J)is not yet complete.”

17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that (K)passed between those pieces. 18 On the same day the Lord (L)made a covenant with Abram, saying:

(M)“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— 19 the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:

TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 24 (A)God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is (B)Lord of heaven and earth, (C)does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He (D)gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one [a]blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and (E)the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 (F)so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, (G)though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for (H)in Him we live and move and have our being, (I)as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, (J)we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. 30 Truly, (K)these times of ignorance God overlooked, but (L)now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which (M)He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by (N)raising Him from the dead.”

And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, (C)which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand (D)and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the [c]fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, (A)we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our (B)God whom we serve is able to (C)deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we (D)worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Saved in Fiery Trial

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore, because the king’s command was [a]urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his [b]counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”

They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”

25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, (E)walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like (F)the[c] Son of God.”

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the [d]mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the (G)Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. 27 And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men (H)on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.

28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His (I)Angel[e] and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!
