(A)“For your sake I send to Babylon

    (C)even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.

  1. Isaiah 23:13 Or that has become nothing

11 And (A)the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[a]

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
    has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
    are lost to you,
    never to be found again!”

15 (B)The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, (C)will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
    (D)that was clothed in fine linen,
        in purple and scarlet,
    adorned with gold,
        with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For (E)in a single hour all this wealth (F)has been laid waste.”

And (G)all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and (H)cried out (I)as they saw the smoke of her burning,

(J)“What city was like the great city?”

19 And they threw (K)dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

“Alas, alas, for the great city
    (L)where all who had ships at sea
    grew rich by her wealth!
For (M)in a single hour she has been laid waste.
20 (N)Rejoice over her, O heaven,
    and you saints and (O)apostles and prophets,
for (P)God has given judgment for you against her!”

21 Then (Q)a mighty angel (R)took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

“So will Babylon (S)the great city be thrown down with violence,
    and will be found no more;

    (A)come all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea

30 (B)and shout aloud over you

(C)They cast dust on their heads
    (D)and wallow in ashes;
31 they (E)make themselves bald for you
    and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
    with bitter mourning.
32 In their wailing they (F)raise a lamentation for you
    and lament over you:
(G)‘Who is like Tyre,
    like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares came from the seas,
    (H)you satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
    (I)you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now (J)you are wrecked by the seas,
    in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
    have sunk with you.
35 (K)All the inhabitants of the coastlands
    are appalled at you,
and (L)the hair of their kings bristles with horror;
    their faces are convulsed.
36 (M)The merchants among the peoples (N)hiss at you;
    (O)you have come to a dreadful end

The Utter Destruction of Babylon

51 Thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will stir up (A)the spirit of a destroyer
    against Babylon,
    against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai,[a]
and I will send to Babylon winnowers,
    and (B)they shall winnow her,
and they shall empty her land,
    when they come against her from every side
    (C)on the day of trouble.
(D)Let not the archer bend his bow,
    and let him not stand up in his armor.
Spare not her young men;
    (E)devote to destruction[b] all her army.
They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
    (F)and wounded in her streets.
(G)For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken
    by their God, the Lord of hosts,
but the land of the Chaldeans[c] is full of guilt
    against the Holy One of Israel.

(H)“Flee from the midst of Babylon;
    let every one save his life!
(I)Be not cut off in her punishment,
    (J)for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance,
    the repayment he is rendering her.
Babylon was (K)a golden cup in the Lord's hand,
    (L)making all the earth drunken;
(M)the nations drank of her wine;
    therefore the nations went mad.
(N)Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;
    (O)wail for her!
(P)Take balm for her pain;
    perhaps she may be healed.
We would have healed Babylon,
    but she was not healed.
(Q)Forsake her, and (R)let us go
    each to his own country,
for (S)her judgment has reached up to heaven
    and has been lifted up even to the skies.
10 (T)The Lord has brought about our vindication;
    (U)come, let us declare in Zion
    the work of the Lord our God.

11 (V)“Sharpen the arrows!
    Take up the shields!

(W)The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of (X)the Medes, because (Y)his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, (Z)for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for (AA)his temple.

28 “A voice! They (C)flee and escape from the land of Babylon, (D)to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for (E)his temple.

29 (F)“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. (G)Encamp around her; let no one escape. (H)Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has (I)proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 30 (J)Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, declares the Lord.

33 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: (O)The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All who took them captive have held them fast; (P)they refuse to let them go. 34 (Q)Their Redeemer is strong; (R)the Lord of hosts is his name. (G)“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, (H)the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, (I)weeping as they come, and they (J)shall seek the Lord their God. For behold, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon (V)a gathering of great nations, from the north country. And they shall array themselves against her. From there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed. 10 (W)Chaldea shall be plundered; all who plunder her shall be sated, declares the Lord.

to open doors before him
    that gates may not be closed:
