¹¹ Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered?^(A)

¹⁸ “Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? ¹⁹ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?^(A) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim?^(B) Have they rescued Samaria^(C) from my hand? ²⁰ Who of all the gods^(D) of these countries have been able to save their lands from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”^(E)

¹⁸ “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands.^{(A) 19} They have thrown their gods into the fire^(B) and destroyed them,^(C) for they were not gods^(D) but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.^(E)

¹² When the Lord has finished all his work^(K) against Mount Zion^(L) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria^(M) for the willful pride^(N) of his heart and the haughty look^(O) in his eyes. ¹³ For he says:

³³ Has the god^(A) of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? ³⁴ Where are the gods of Hamath^(B) and Arpad?^(C) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? ³⁵ Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”^(D)

⁴ But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So^[a] king of Egypt,^(A) and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison.^{(B) 5} The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege^(C) to it for three years. ⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria^(D) captured Samaria^(E) and deported^(F) the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan^(G) on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.
