³³ As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will reign over you with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm^(A) and with outpoured wrath.^{(B) 34} I will bring you from the nations^(C) and gather^(D) you from the countries where you have been scattered—with a mighty hand^(E) and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.^(F)

⁴ He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God^(A) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.^(B)

⁵ Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?^{(C) 6} And now you know what is holding him back,^(D) so that he may be revealed at the proper time. ⁷ For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back^(E) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. ⁸ And then the lawless one will be revealed,^(F) whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth^(G) and destroy by the splendor of his coming.^(H)

²² They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” ²³ Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel^(A) of the Lord struck him down,^(B) and he was eaten by worms and died.

⁷ “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire^(A) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched^(B) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.^{(C) 8} Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture^(D) it and burn^(E) it down.’

⁹ “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive^(F) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! ¹⁰ Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian^[a] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn^(G) this city down.”
