(A)Be delayed and horrified,
Blind yourselves and be blind;
They (B)become drunk, but not with wine,
They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.
10 For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep (C)sleep,
He has (D)shut your eyes—the prophets;
And He has covered your heads—the seers.

11 The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed [a](E)book, which, when they give it to the one who [b]is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.” 12 Then the [c]book will be given to the one who [d]is illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I [e]cannot read.”

13 Then the Lord said,

“Because (F)this people approaches Me with their [f]words
And honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me,
And their [g]reverence for Me [h]consists of the commandment of men that is taught;
14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal (G)marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And (H)the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the understanding of their men who have understanding will be concealed.”

And these also (A)reel with wine and stagger from intoxicating drink:
(B)The priest and (C)the prophet reel with intoxicating drink,
They are confused by wine, they stagger from (D)intoxicating drink;
They reel while [a]having (E)visions,
They stagger when rendering a verdict.
For all the tables are full of filthy (F)vomit, without a single clean place.

Captivity Threatened

12 “Therefore you are to speak this word to them. ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: “Every jug is to be filled with wine.”’ And when they say to you, ‘Do we not very well know that every jug is to be filled with wine?’ 13 then say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to fill all the inhabitants of this land—the kings who sit for David on his throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with (A)drunkenness! 14 Then I will (B)smash them against each other, both the (C)fathers and the sons together,” declares the Lord. “I will (D)not have compassion nor be troubled nor take pity so as to keep from destroying them.”’”

15 Listen and pay attention, do not be (E)haughty;
For the Lord has spoken.
16 (F)Give glory to the Lord your God
Before He brings (G)darkness
And before your (H)feet stumble
On the mountains in the dark,
And while you are hoping for light
He makes it into (I)gloom,
And turns it into thick darkness.

The Doom of Babylon

17 (A)Then one of the (B)seven angels who had the (C)seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you (D)the judgment of the (E)great prostitute who (F)sits on many waters, with whom (G)the kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and (H)those who live on the earth (I)became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.”

Grief over Babylon

“And (A)the kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and (B)lived luxuriously with her, will (C)weep and mourn over her when they (D)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (E)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(F)Woe, woe, (G)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (H)one hour your judgment has come.’
