¹⁹ For it is written,

²⁰ Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?^{(A) 21} For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of the proclamation, to save those who believe.^{(B) 22} For Jews ask for signs and Greeks desire wisdom, ²³ but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,^{(C) 24} but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Judgment on Edom

⁷ Concerning Edom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

³⁹ Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”^{(A) 40} Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?”^{(B) 41} Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.^(C)

²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”^{(A) 30} The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will.^{(B) 32} Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” ³⁴ They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out.

²⁴ For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”^(A)
