¹⁵ You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death,^(A)
    with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.
When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,^(B)
    it cannot touch us,
for we have made a lie^(C) our refuge
    and falsehood^[a] our hiding place.^(D)”

⁷ therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
    the mighty floodwaters^(A) of the Euphrates—
    the king of Assyria^(B) with all his pomp.^(C)
It will overflow all its channels,
    run over all its banks^(D)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,^(E)
    passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings^(F) will cover the breadth of your land,
    Immanuel^[a]!”^(G)

“For three sins of Judah,^(A)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because they have rejected the law^(B) of the Lord
    and have not kept his decrees,^(C)
because they have been led astray^(D) by false gods,^[a](E)
    the gods^[b] their ancestors followed,^(F)

¹⁸ In that day I will make a covenant for them
    with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the creatures that move along the ground.^(A)
Bow and sword and battle
    I will abolish^(B) from the land,
    so that all may lie down in safety.^(C)

¹⁸ Your covenant with death will be annulled;
    your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.^(A)
When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,^(B)
    you will be beaten down^(C) by it.

¹² At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
    and punish those who are complacent,^(A)
    who are like wine left on its dregs,^(B)
who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing,^(C)
    either good or bad.’^(D)
