    a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.

    and ^(G)the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

^18 (A)“What profit is an idol
    when its maker has shaped it,
    a metal image, ^(B)a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
    when he makes ^(C)speechless idols!
^19 (D)Woe to him ^(E)who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
    to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
    and ^(F)there is no breath at all in it.
²⁰ But ^(G)the Lord is in his holy temple;
    ^(H)let all the earth keep silence before him.”

¹² “I, I am he ^(A)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of ^(B)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made ^(C)like grass,
¹³ and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    ^(D)who stretched out the heavens
    and ^(E)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of ^(F)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of ^(G)the oppressor?

“May ^(B)the offspring of evildoers
    nevermore be named!
²¹ Prepare slaughter for his sons
    ^(C)because of the guilt of their fathers,
lest they rise and possess the earth,
    and fill the face of the world with cities.”

²⁸ Then they ^(A)yoked themselves to the ^(B)Baal of Peor,
    and ate sacrifices offered to ^(C)the dead;
