⁵ The Lord, the Lord Almighty, has a day^(A)
    of tumult and trampling^(B) and terror^(C)
    in the Valley of Vision,^(D)
a day of battering down walls^(E)
    and of crying out to the mountains.

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
    and to the hills, “Cover us!”’^[a](A)

⁵ Her foes have become her masters;
    her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief^(A)
    because of her many sins.^(B)
Her children have gone into exile,^(C)
    captive before the foe.^(D)

⁸ The high places^(A) of wickedness^[a](B) will be destroyed—
    it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns^(C) and thistles will grow up
    and cover their altars.^(D)
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”^(E)
    and to the hills, “Fall on us!”^(F)

² Without pity^(A) the Lord has swallowed^(B) up
    all the dwellings of Jacob;
in his wrath he has torn down
    the strongholds^(C) of Daughter Judah.
He has brought her kingdom and its princes
    down to the ground^(D) in dishonor.
