² at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz.^(A) He said to him, “Take off the sackcloth^(B) from your body and the sandals^(C) from your feet.” And he did so, going around stripped^(D) and barefoot.^(E)

⁴ John’s^(A) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.^(B) His food was locusts^(C) and wild honey.

Weeping and Mourning

²⁴ He stripped^(A) off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s^(B) presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”^(C)

⁴ “On that day every prophet will be ashamed^(A) of their prophetic vision. They will not put on a prophet’s garment^(B) of hair^(C) in order to deceive.^(D)

²³ You will keep your turbans^(A) on your heads and your sandals^(B) on your feet. You will not mourn^(C) or weep but will waste away^(D) because of^[a] your sins and groan among yourselves.^(E)

¹⁷ Groan quietly;^(A) do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban^(B) fastened and your sandals^(C) on your feet; do not cover your mustache and beard^(D) or eat the customary food of mourners.^(E)”
