The People of Nineveh Repent

⁶ The word reached^[a] the king of Nineveh, and ^(A)he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, ^(B)and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, ^(C)“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor ^(D)beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, ⁸ but let man and ^(E)beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. ^(F)Let everyone turn from his evil way and from ^(G)the violence that is in his hands.

^21 (A)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^(B)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

³⁸ On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like ^(A)a vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. ³⁹ How it is broken! How they wail! ^(B)How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab ^(C)has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

¹³ The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah—^(A)all the houses on whose ^(B)roofs offerings have been offered ^(C)to all the host of heaven, and ^(D)drink offerings have been poured out to other gods—shall be defiled ^(E)like the place of Topheth.’”
