¹⁰ It grew until it reached^(A) the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth^(B) and trampled^(C) on them. ¹¹ It set itself up to be as great as the commander^(D) of the army of the Lord;^(E) it took away the daily sacrifice^(F) from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down.^{(G) 12} Because of rebellion, the Lord’s people^[a] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.^(H)

² “Son of man^(A), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

¹² “Son of man, take up a lament^(A) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

⁴ He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God^(A) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.^(B)

²² “But you, Belshazzar, his son,^[a] have not humbled^(A) yourself, though you knew all this. ²³ Instead, you have set yourself up against^(B) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives^(C) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.^(D) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life^(E) and all your ways.^(F)

³ Speak to him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

²³ And you, Capernaum,^(A) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.^[a](B) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
