⁶ Wail,^(A) for the day^(B) of the Lord is near;
    it will come like destruction^(C) from the Almighty.^[a](D)
7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,^(E)
    every heart will melt with fear.^(F)
8 Terror^(G) will seize them,
    pain and anguish will grip^(H) them;
    they will writhe like a woman in labor.^(I)
They will look aghast at each other,
    their faces aflame.^(J)

⁹ See, the day^(K) of the Lord is coming
    —a cruel^(L) day, with wrath^(M) and fierce anger^(N)—
to make the land desolate
    and destroy the sinners within it.
¹⁰ The stars of heaven and their constellations
    will not show their light.^(O)
The rising sun^(P) will be darkened^(Q)
    and the moon will not give its light.^(R)
11 I will punish^(S) the world for its evil,
    the wicked^(T) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty^(U)
    and will humble^(V) the pride of the ruthless.^(W)
12 I will make people^(X) scarcer than pure gold,
    more rare than the gold of Ophir.^(Y)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;^(Z)
    and the earth will shake^(AA) from its place
at the wrath^(AB) of the Lord Almighty,
    in the day of his burning anger.^(AC)

¹⁴ Like a hunted^(AD) gazelle,
    like sheep without a shepherd,^(AE)
they will all return to their own people,
    they will flee^(AF) to their native land.^(AG)
15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
    all who are caught will fall^(AH) by the sword.^(AI)
16 Their infants^(AJ) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
    their houses will be looted and their wives violated.^(AK)

¹⁵ “The day of the Lord is near^(A)
    for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
    your deeds^(B) will return upon your own head.
¹⁶ Just as you drank^(C) on my holy hill,^(D)
    so all the nations will drink^(E) continually;
they will drink and drink
    and be as if they had never been.^(F)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;^(G)
    it will be holy,^(H)
    and Jacob will possess his inheritance.^(I)
18 Jacob will be a fire
    and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
    and they will set him on fire^(J) and destroy^(K) him.
There will be no survivors^(L)
    from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.

¹⁹ People from the Negev will occupy
    the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
    the land of the Philistines.^(M)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,^(N)
    and Benjamin^(O) will possess Gilead.
²⁰ This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
    will possess the land as far as Zarephath;^(P)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    will possess the towns of the Negev.^(Q)
21 Deliverers^(R) will go up on^[a] Mount Zion
    to govern the mountains of Esau.
    And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.^(S)
