36 A sword against the diviners,
    so that they may become fools!
A sword against her warriors,
    so that they may be dismayed!(B)
37 A sword against her[a] horses and against her[b] chariots
    and against all the foreign troops in her midst,
    so that they may become women!
A sword against her treasures,
    that they may be plundered!(C)
38 A drought against her waters,
    that they may be dried up!
For it is a land of images,
    and they go mad over idols.(D)

39 Therefore wild animals shall live with hyenas in Babylon,[c] and ostriches shall inhabit her; she shall never again be peopled or inhabited for all generations.(E) 40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, says the Lord, so no one shall live there, nor shall anyone settle in her.(F)

41 Look, a people is coming from the north;
    a mighty nation and many kings
    are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.(G)
42 They wield bow and spear;
    they are cruel and have no mercy.
The sound of them is like the roaring sea;
    they ride upon horses,
set in array as a warrior for battle,
    against you, O daughter Babylon!(H)

    in a moment, in one day:
the loss of children and widowhood
    shall come upon you in full measure,
in spite of your many sorceries
    and the great power of your enchantments.(A)

10 You felt secure in your wickedness;
    you said, “No one sees me.”
Your wisdom and your knowledge
    led you astray,
and you said in your heart,
    “I am, and there is no one besides me.”(B)
11 But evil shall come upon you,
    which you cannot charm away;
disaster shall fall upon you,
    which you will not be able to ward off,
and ruin shall come on you suddenly,
    of which you know nothing.(C)

12 Stand fast in your enchantments
    and your many sorceries,
    with which you have labored from your youth;
perhaps you may be able to succeed;
    perhaps you may inspire terror.(D)
13 You are wearied with your many consultations;
    let those who study[a] the heavens
stand up and save you,
    those who gaze at the stars
and at each new moon predict
    what[b] shall befall you.(E)

14 See, they are like stubble;
    the fire consumes them;
they cannot deliver themselves
    from the power of the flame.
No coal for warming oneself is this,
    no fire to sit before!(F)

19 but you are cast out, away from your grave,
    like loathsome carrion,[a]
clothed with the dead, those pierced by the sword,
    who go down to the stones of the Pit

20 You will not be joined with them in burial
    because you have destroyed your land;
    you have killed your people.

May the descendants of evildoers
    nevermore be named!(B)
21 Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons
    because of the guilt of their father.[b]
Let them never rise to possess the earth
    or cover the face of the world with cities.(C)

22 I will rise up against them, says the Lord of hosts, and will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, offspring and posterity, says the Lord.(D)
