9 El pueblo que a oscuras caminaba
vio surgir una luz deslumbradora;
habitaban un país tenebroso
y una luz brillante los cubrió.
2 Multiplicas el gozo,
aumentas la alegría;
se alegran ante ti
igual que al cosechar,
lo mismo que gozan
al repartir el botín.
3 Pues como hiciste el día de Madián
has roto el yugo que lo oprimía,
la soga sobre su hombro,
la vara de su opresor.
4 Y todas las botas
que retumban al pisar
y todas las capas
bañadas en sangre,
acabarán quemadas,
pasto del fuego.
5 Pues nos ha nacido un niño,
un hijo se nos ha dado:
trae el señorío
encima de sus hombros,
y tiene como nombre:
Consejero Admirable,
Héroe Divino,
Padre Eterno,
Príncipe Pacífico.
6 Para aumentar el señorío
con una paz sin fronteras
sobre el trono de David;
lo asentará en todo su territorio
con seguridad y firmeza,
con justicia y con derecho,
desde ahora y para siempre.
El celo del Señor del universo
piensa ejecutar todo esto.
De nuevo la mano amenazante del Señor
7 El Señor ha mandado un aviso a Jacob,
que caerá sobre Israel.
8 Todo el pueblo podrá entenderlo,
Efraín y quien habite en Samaría,
que dicen orgullosos y altaneros:
9 “Si fallan los ladrillos,
construiremos con piedra,
si talan los sicómoros,
los cambiaremos por cedros”.
10 El Señor los lanzará contra Israel,
instigará a sus adversarios contra él:
11 por oriente los arameos,
los filisteos por la espalda,
se comerán a Israel a dos carrillos.
Con todo, su cólera persiste,
su mano sigue amenazante.
12 Y el pueblo no vuelve a quien lo hiere,
no consulta al Señor del universo.
13 El Señor cortó cabeza y cola,
palmas y juncos en un solo día.
14 Son la cabeza el anciano y el noble;
la cola, el profeta experto en mentiras.
15 Sus propios guías al pueblo extravían,
los guiados desaparecen engullidos.
16 Por eso, el Señor no hará caso de los jóvenes,
tampoco se apiadará de huérfanos y viudas,
pues todos son impíos y malvados,
toda boca profiere necedades.
Con todo, su cólera persiste,
su mano sigue amenazante.
17 La maldad arde como fuego
que devora zarzas y cardos,
se ceba en la fronda del bosque,
y se alzan remolinos de humo.
18 La ira del Señor del universo abrasa al país,
el pueblo se convierte en pasto de las llamas.
Nadie se compadece de su prójimo,
19 cada cual devora a su hermano,
dentellea a la derecha y sigue con hambre,
come a la izquierda y no se sacia:
20 Manasés a Efraín, Efraín a Manasés,
los dos juntos a Judá.
Con todo, su cólera persiste,
Su mano sigue amenazante.

Nos ha nacido un niño
9 A pesar de todo, no habrá más penumbra para la que estuvo angustiada. En el pasado Dios humilló a la tierra de Zabulón y a la tierra de Neftalí; pero en el futuro honrará a Galilea de los gentiles, desde el Camino del Mar, al otro lado del Jordán.
2 El pueblo que andaba en la oscuridad
ha visto una gran luz;
sobre los que vivían en tierra de sombra de muerte[a]
una luz ha resplandecido.
3 Tú has hecho que la nación crezca;
has aumentado su alegría.
Y se alegran ellos en tu presencia
como cuando recogen la cosecha,
como cuando reparten el botín.
4 Ciertamente tú has quebrado,
como en la derrota de Madián,
el yugo que los oprimía,
la barra que pesaba sobre sus hombros,
el bastón de mando que los subyugaba.
5 Todas las botas guerreras que resonaron en la batalla
y toda la ropa teñida en sangre
serán arrojadas al fuego,
serán consumidas por las llamas.
6 Porque nos ha nacido un niño,
se nos ha concedido un hijo;
la soberanía reposará sobre sus hombros
y se le darán estos nombres:
Consejero Admirable, Dios Fuerte,
Padre Eterno, Príncipe de Paz.
7 Se extenderán su soberanía y su paz
y no tendrán fin.
Gobernará sobre el trono de David
y sobre su reino,
para establecerlo y sostenerlo
con justicia y rectitud
desde ahora y para siempre.
Esto lo llevará a cabo
el celo del Señor de los Ejércitos.
El enojo del Señor contra Israel
8 El Señor ha enviado su palabra;
la ha enviado contra Jacob,
¡ya cae sobre Israel!
9 De esto se entera todo el pueblo
—Efraín y los habitantes de Samaria—,
todos los que dicen con orgullo
y piensan con arrogancia:
10 «Si se caen los ladrillos,
reconstruiremos con piedra tallada;
si se caen las vigas de higuera,
las repondremos con vigas de cedro».
11 Pero el Señor ha fortalecido a los adversarios de Rezín;
ha incitado a sus enemigos.
12 Los arameos en el este y los filisteos en el oeste
se comieron a Israel de un solo bocado.
A pesar de todo esto, la ira de Dios no se ha aplacado;
su mano aún sigue extendida.
13 Pero el pueblo no volvió al que lo ha castigado;
no ha buscado al Señor de los Ejércitos.
14 Por eso en un mismo día el Señor cortará a Israel la cabeza y la cola,
la palmera y el junco.
15 La cabeza son los jefes y la gente de alto rango;
la cola son los profetas, maestros de mentiras.
16 Los guías de este pueblo lo han extraviado;
los que se dejan guiar son confundidos.
17 Por eso no se complacerá el Señor en los jóvenes;
tampoco se apiadará de huérfanos y viudas,
porque todos ellos son impíos y malvados;
sus labios profieren necedades.
A pesar de todo esto, la ira de Dios no se ha aplacado;
su mano aún sigue extendida.
18 Porque la maldad arde como un fuego
que consume espinos y cardos,
que incendia la espesura del bosque
y sube luego, como torbellino, en una columna de humo.
19 Por la ira del Señor de los Ejércitos
arderá en fuego la tierra.
Y el pueblo será el combustible:
¡Nadie se compadecerá de su hermano!
20 Unos comerán lo que esté a su mano derecha,
pero se quedarán con hambre;
otros comerán lo que esté a su izquierda,
pero no quedarán satisfechos.
¡Se comerán a sus propios hijos![b]
21 Manasés se comerá a Efraín y Efraín a Manasés;
entonces los dos juntos atacarán a Judá.
A pesar de todo esto,
la ira de Dios no se ha aplacado;
su mano aún sigue extendida.

Nacimiento y reinado del Príncipe de la paz
1b (8.23b) Al principio Dios humilló a Galilea, tierra de Zabulón y de Neftalí, región vecina a los paganos, que se extiende desde el otro lado del Jordán hasta la orilla del mar; pero después le concedió mucho honor.
2 (1) El pueblo que andaba en la oscuridad
vio una gran luz;
una luz ha brillado
para los que vivían en tinieblas.
3 (2) Señor, has traído una gran alegría;
muy grande es el gozo.
Todos se alegran delante de ti como en tiempo de cosecha,
como se alegran los que se reparten grandes riquezas.
4 (3) Porque tú has deshecho
la esclavitud que oprimía al pueblo,
la opresión que lo afligía,
la tiranía a que estaba sometido.
Fue como cuando destruiste a Madián.
5 (4) Las botas que hacían resonar los soldados
y los vestidos manchados de sangre
serán quemados, destruidos por el fuego.
6 (5) Porque nos ha nacido un niño,
Dios nos ha dado un hijo,
al cual se le ha concedido el poder de gobernar.
Y le darán estos nombres:
Admirable en sus planes, Dios invencible,
Padre eterno, Príncipe de la paz.
7 (6) Se sentará en el trono de David;
extenderá su poder real a todas partes
y la paz no se acabará;
su reinado quedará bien establecido,
y sus bases serán la justicia y el derecho
desde ahora y para siempre.
Esto lo hará el ardiente amor del Señor todopoderoso.
Ira del Señor contra el reino de Israel
8 (7) El Señor ha enviado un mensaje a Israel,
al pueblo de Jacob;
9 (8) todo el pueblo de Efraín, que vive en Samaria,
lo ha entendido.
Ellos dicen con orgullo y altanería:
10 (9) «Se han caído los ladrillos,
pero vamos a construir con piedra.
Han cortado las vigas de sicómoro,
pero las vamos a cambiar por madera de cedro.»
11 (10) El Señor ha hecho venir terribles enemigos;
él mismo les ha ordenado atacar.
12 (11) Por el oriente los sirios,
por el occidente los filisteos.
De un bocado se tragaron a Israel.
Y, sin embargo, la ira del Señor no se ha calmado;
él sigue amenazando todavía.
13 (12) Pero el pueblo no se volvió a Dios, que lo castigaba;
no buscó al Señor todopoderoso.
14 (13) Entonces el Señor trató al reino de Israel
como quien corta a un animal la cola y la cabeza,
como quien derriba palmeras y juncos por igual.
¡Todo esto en un solo día!
15 (14) (La cabeza representa a los ancianos y los jefes,
la cola a los profetas que enseñan mentiras.)
16 (15) Los jefes han extraviado a este pueblo,
y los que buscaban un guía se perdieron.
17 (16) Por eso el Señor no tuvo compasión de los jóvenes,
ni misericordia de los huérfanos y las viudas.
Porque el pueblo entero es impío y perverso
y todos dicen disparates.
Y sin embargo la ira del Señor no se ha calmado;
él sigue amenazando todavía.
18 (17) La maldad hace estragos
como un incendio que devora espinos y matorrales
y quema luego los árboles del bosque,
y los lanza por los aires entre torbellinos de humo.
19-20 (18-19) Por la ira del Señor todopoderoso
el país está incendiado,
el fuego destruye al pueblo;
se comen la carne de sus propios hijos
y no tienen compasión de sus hermanos.
Aquí hay uno que engulle y queda con hambre,
allá hay otro que come y no se siente satisfecho.
21 (20) Manasés destruye a Efraín, Efraín a Manasés,
y ambos se lanzan contra Judá.
Y sin embargo la ira del Señor no se ha calmado;
él sigue amenazando todavía.

9 [a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness(C)
have seen a great light;(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
a light has dawned.(F)
3 You have enlarged the nation(G)
and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(I)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(M)
the rod of their oppressor.(N)
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(O)
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,(P)
to us a son is given,(Q)
and the government(R) will be on his shoulders.(S)
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,(T) Mighty God,(U)
Everlasting(V) Father,(W) Prince of Peace.(X)
7 Of the greatness of his government(Y) and peace(Z)
there will be no end.(AA)
He will reign(AB) on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice(AC) and righteousness(AD)
from that time on and forever.(AE)
The zeal(AF) of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)”
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
have devoured(AQ) Israel with open mouth.
13 But the people have not returned(AT) to him who struck(AU) them,
nor have they sought(AV) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(AW) in a single day;(AX)
15 the elders(AY) and dignitaries(AZ) are the head,
the prophets(BA) who teach lies(BB) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(BC) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(BD)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(BE)
nor will he pity(BF) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(BG) and wicked,(BH)
every mouth speaks folly.(BI)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(BJ)
18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(BK)
it consumes briers and thorns,(BL)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(BM)
so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(BN) of the Lord Almighty
the land will be scorched(BO)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(BP)
they will not spare one another.(BQ)
20 On the right they will devour,
but still be hungry;(BR)
on the left they will eat,(BS)
but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[b]:
21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(BT)
together they will turn against Judah.(BU)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(BV)

9 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.
9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.
11 Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;
12 The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
13 For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.
14 Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.
15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
