Asiria, el instrumento del Señor
8 El Señor me dijo: «Toma una tablilla grande y, con un estilete común, escribe sobre ella: “Tocante a Maher Salal Jasbaz”.[a] 2 Yo convocaré como testigos confiables al sacerdote Urías y a Zacarías hijo de Jeberequías».
3 Luego tuve relaciones con la profetisa, y ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Ponle por nombre Maher Salal Jasbaz. 4 Antes de que el niño aprenda a decir “papá” y “mamá”, la riqueza de Damasco y el botín de Samaria serán llevados ante el rey de Asiria».
5 El Señor volvió a decirme:
6 «Por cuanto este pueblo ha rechazado
las mansas corrientes de Siloé
y se regocija con Rezín
y con el hijo de Remalías,
7 el Señor está a punto de traer contra ellos
las impetuosas crecidas del río Éufrates:
al rey de Asiria con toda su gloria.
Rebasará todos sus canales,
desbordará todas sus orillas;
8 pasará hasta Judá, la inundará,
y crecerá hasta llegarle al cuello.
Sus alas extendidas, ¡oh Emanuel!,[b]
cubrirán la anchura de tu tierra».
9 Escuchad esto, naciones,
todas las naciones lejanas:
¡Alzad el grito de guerra,
y seréis destrozadas!
¡Preparaos para la batalla,
y seréis despedazadas!
¡Preparaos para la batalla,
y seréis desmenuzadas!
10 Trazad vuestra estrategia,
pero será desbaratada;
proponed vuestro plan,
pero no se realizará,
porque Dios está con nosotros.[c]
Hay que temer a Dios
11 El Señor me habló fuertemente y me advirtió que no siguiera el camino de este pueblo. Me dijo:
12 «No digáis que es conspiración
todo lo que llama conspiración esta gente;
no temáis lo que ellos temen,
ni os dejéis asustar.
13 Solo al Señor Todopoderoso
tendréis por santo,
solo a él debéis honrar,
solo a él habéis de temer.
14 El Señor será un santuario.
Pero será una piedra de tropiezo
para las dos casas de Israel;
¡una roca que los hará caer!
¡Será para los habitantes de Jerusalén
un lazo y una trampa!
15 Muchos de ellos tropezarán;
caerán y serán quebrantados.
Se les tenderán trampas,
y en ellas quedarán atrapados».
16 Guarda bien el testimonio;
sella la ley entre mis discípulos.
17 El Señor ha escondido su rostro
del pueblo de Jacob,
pero yo esperaré en él,
pues en él tengo puesta mi esperanza.
18 Aquí me tenéis, con los hijos que el Señor me ha dado. Somos en Israel señales y presagios del Señor Todopoderoso, que habita en el monte Sión.
19 Si alguien os dice: «Consultad a las pitonisas y a los agoreros que susurran y musitan; ¿acaso no es deber de un pueblo consultar a sus dioses y a los muertos, en favor de los vivos?», 20 yo os digo: «¡Ateneos a la ley y al testimonio!» Para quienes no se atengan a esto, no habrá un amanecer.
21 Vosotros os enfureceréis cuando, angustiados y hambrientos, vaguéis por la tierra. Levantando los ojos al cielo, maldeciréis a vuestro rey y a vuestro Dios, 22 y, clavando la mirada en la tierra, solo veréis aflicción, tinieblas y espantosa penumbra; ¡seréis arrojados a una oscuridad total!

El hijo de Isaías recibe un nombre simbólico
8 1-2 Dios me dijo:
«Isaías, quiero que llames al sacerdote Urías y a Zacarías hijo de Jeberequías, para que sean testigos de lo que vas a hacer. Delante de ellos tomarás una tabla de arcilla grande y escribirás, con letras grandes y claras, el nombre Maher-salal-hasbaz, que significa “Ya viene la destrucción, ya están aquí los ladrones”».
3 Tiempo después mi esposa y yo tuvimos un hijo. Entonces Dios me dijo:
«Ponle por nombre Maher-salal-hasbaz. 4 Porque antes que el niño aprenda a decir “mamá” y “papá”, el rey de Asiria destruirá las ciudades de Damasco y Samaria, y se quedará con todas sus riquezas».
5 Luego Dios me volvió a decir:
6 «Yo soy tranquilo,
como las aguas del estanque de Siloé.
Pero esta gente de Judá me ha despreciado,
pues tiene miedo de Resín y de Pécah,
los reyes de Siria y de Israel.
7 »Por eso enviaré contra Judá
al ejército de Asiria.
Los asirios la atacarán y la destruirán,
como cuando se inunda el río Éufrates,
y el agua se desborda por todos sus canales
cubriendo todo lo que se pone en su camino.
8 Los enemigos asirios llegarán hasta Judá
como cuando llega una gran inundación.
Atacarán como un águila,
que con sus alas extendidas,
se lanza sobre toda la tierra.
¡Pero Dios está con nosotros!
9 »¡Escuchen esto, naciones lejanas,
de nada sirve que se preparen para la guerra!
Aunque se armen hasta los dientes,
quedarán aterrorizados y destruidos.
10 De nada servirán sus planes,
pues Dios los hará fracasar.
Aunque llamen a la batalla,
nadie les hará caso,
pues Dios está con nosotros».
Sólo a Dios hay que temer
11 Dios me tomó fuertemente con su mano y me advirtió que no me comportara como los de Judá. También me dio este mensaje para ellos:
12 «No llamen “conspiración” a todo lo que la gente llama “conspiración”. A la gente le da miedo cuando los reyes se juntan para hacer planes de guerra. Pero ustedes no deben asustarse ni tener miedo. 13 Yo soy el Dios todopoderoso y es a mí a quien deben adorar y temer. 14 De lo contrario, seré para ustedes como una trampa, en la que caerán todos los habitantes de Jerusalén. Seré como una piedra con la que tropezarán los dos reinos de Israel. 15 Muchos tropezarán, caerán y morirán; muchos caerán en la trampa y quedarán atrapados».

16 Entonces Isaías les dijo a sus discípulos:
«Mantengan en secreto mis mensajes
y las enseñanzas que les he dado.
17 Dios está enojado con su pueblo,
pero yo confío en su bondad,
y en él he puesto mi esperanza.
18 Dios vive en el monte Sión,
y él me ha dado hijos
para que juntos sirvamos
de advertencia a su pueblo.
19-20 »Seguramente la gente les dirá:
“Todos los pueblos consultan a sus dioses
y les piden instrucciones o mensajes.
Vayan ustedes y consulten
a los brujos y adivinos,
para que les digan qué va a suceder”.
»¡Pero no hagan caso,
son puras tonterías!
21 »La gente irá de un lado para el otro,
hambrienta y maltratada;
el hambre los pondrá furiosos
y maldecirán a su rey y a sus dioses.
Mirarán por todas partes
22 y sólo verán miseria y angustia.
¡Vivirán en la más terrible oscuridad!

Isaiah and His Children as Signs
8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[a](B) 2 So I called in Uriah(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(D) for me. 3 Then I made love to the prophetess,(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(G) 4 For before the boy knows(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(J)”
5 The Lord spoke to me again:
6 “Because this people has rejected(K)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(M)
7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(N) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(O) with all his pomp.(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(Q)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(R)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[b]!”(T)
9 Raise the war cry,[c](U) you nations, and be shattered!(V)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(W) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(X)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(Y)
for God is with us.[d](Z)
11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(AA) warning me not to follow(AB) the way of this people:
12 “Do not call conspiracy(AC)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(AD)
and do not dread it.(AE)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(AF)
he is the one you are to fear,(AG)
he is the one you are to dread.(AH)
14 He will be a holy place;(AI)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(AJ) that causes people to stumble(AK)
and a rock that makes them fall.(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(AM)
15 Many of them will stumble;(AN)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”
16 Bind up this testimony of warning(AO)
and seal(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(AS)
18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(AT) We are signs(AU) and symbols(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(AW)
The Darkness Turns to Light
19 When someone tells you to consult(AX) mediums and spiritists,(AY) who whisper and mutter,(AZ) should not a people inquire(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(BB) and the testimony of warning.(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(BD) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(BE) they will roam through the land;(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(BG) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(BI)

Assyria Will Invade the Land
8 Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and (A)write on it with a man’s pen concerning [a]Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 2 And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, (B)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3 Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; 4 (C)for before the child [b]shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ (D)the riches of Damascus and the [c]spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”
5 The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:
6 “Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of (E)Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice (F)in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of [d]the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will [e]go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8 He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
(G)He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will [f]fill the breadth of Your land, O (H)Immanuel.[g]
9 “Be(I) shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10 (J)Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, (K)but it will not stand,
(L)For [h]God is with us.”
Fear God, Heed His Word
11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with [i]a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
12 “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their [j]threats, nor be [k]troubled.
13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14 (M)He will be as a [l]sanctuary,
But (N)a stone of stumbling and a rock of [m]offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall (O)stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and [n]taken.”
16 Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait on the Lord,
Who (P)hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I (Q)will hope in Him.
18 (R)Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We (S)are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.
19 And when they say to you, (T)“Seek those who are mediums and wizards, (U)who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they (V)seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 (W)To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because (X)there[o] is no light in them.
21 They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and (Y)curse [p]their king and their God, and look upward. 22 Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.
