El verdadero ayuno
58 «¡Grita con toda tu fuerza, no te reprimas!
Alza tu voz como trompeta.
Denúnciale a mi pueblo sus rebeldías;
sus pecados, a los descendientes de Jacob.
2 Porque día tras día me buscan
y desean conocer mis caminos,
como si fueran una nación que practicara la justicia,
como si no hubieran abandonado mis mandamientos.
Me piden decisiones justas,
desean acercarse a mí
3 y hasta me reclaman:
“¿Para qué ayunamos, si no lo tomas en cuenta?
¿Para qué nos afligimos, si tú no lo notas?”.
»Pero el día en que ustedes ayunan,
hacen lo que desean y explotan a sus obreros.
4 Ustedes solo ayunan para pelear, reñir,
y darse puñetazos a mansalva.
Si quieren que el cielo atienda sus ruegos,
¡ayunen, pero no como ahora lo hacen!
5 ¿Acaso el ayuno que he escogido
es solo un día para que el hombre se mortifique?
¿Y solo para que incline la cabeza como un junco,
se ponga ropa de luto y se cubra de ceniza?
¿A eso llaman ustedes día de ayuno
y el día aceptable al Señor?
6 »El ayuno que he escogido,
¿no es más bien romper las cadenas de injusticia
y desatar las correas del yugo,
poner en libertad a los oprimidos
y romper toda atadura?
7 ¿No es acaso el ayuno compartir tu pan con el hambriento
y dar refugio a los pobres sin techo,
vestir al desnudo
y no dar la espalda a los tuyos?
8 Si así procedes, tu luz despuntará como la aurora,
y al instante llegará tu sanidad;
tu justicia te abrirá el camino,
y la gloria del Señor te seguirá.
9 Llamarás y el Señor responderá;
pedirás ayuda y él dirá: “¡Aquí estoy!”.
»Si desechas el yugo de opresión,
el dedo acusador y la lengua maliciosa,
10 si te dedicas a ayudar a los hambrientos
y a saciar la necesidad del desvalido,
entonces brillará tu luz en las tinieblas
y como el mediodía será tu noche.
11 El Señor te guiará siempre;
te saciará en tierras resecas
y fortalecerá tus huesos.
Serás como jardín bien regado,
como manantial cuyas aguas no se agotan.
12 Tu pueblo reconstruirá las ruinas antiguas
y levantará los cimientos de antaño;
serás llamado “reparador de muros derruidos”,
“restaurador de calles transitables”.
13 »Si dejas de profanar el sábado
y no haces lo que deseas en mi día santo;
si llamas al sábado “delicia”
y al día santo del Señor, “honorable”;
si te abstienes de profanarlo
y lo honras no haciendo negocios
ni profiriendo palabras inútiles,
14 entonces hallarás tu gozo en el Señor;
sobre las cumbres de la tierra te haré cabalgar
y haré que te deleites en la herencia de tu padre Jacob».
El Señor mismo lo ha dicho.

True Fasting
58 “Shout it aloud,(A) do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.(B)
Declare to my people their rebellion(C)
and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.(D)
2 For day after day they seek(E) me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken(F) the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near(G) them.
3 ‘Why have we fasted,’(H) they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled(I) ourselves,
and you have not noticed?’(J)
“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please(K)
and exploit all your workers.
4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,(L)
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard(M) on high.
5 Is this the kind of fast(N) I have chosen,
only a day for people to humble(O) themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed(P)
and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?(Q)
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting(R) I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice(S)
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed(T) free
and break every yoke?(U)
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry(V)
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter(W)—
when you see the naked, to clothe(X) them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?(Y)
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,(Z)
and your healing(AA) will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a](AB) will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.(AC)
9 Then you will call,(AD) and the Lord will answer;(AE)
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger(AF) and malicious talk,(AG)
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,(AH)
then your light(AI) will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.(AJ)
11 The Lord will guide(AK) you always;
he will satisfy your needs(AL) in a sun-scorched land(AM)
and will strengthen(AN) your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,(AO)
like a spring(AP) whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins(AQ)
and will raise up the age-old foundations;(AR)
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,(AS)
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath(AT)
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight(AU)
and the Lord’s holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,(AV)
14 then you will find your joy(AW) in the Lord,
and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights(AX) of the land
and to feast on the inheritance(AY) of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.(AZ)

58 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.
9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:
11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

58 Ropa ut det högt som ljudet av trumpetstötar! Låt mitt folk få veta att de är upproriska!
2 Ändå uppträder de så gudfruktigt! De kommer till templet varje dag och är så angelägna att lyssna när min lag föreläses, precis som om de tänkte lyda den och inte alls föraktade sin Guds befallningar! De är så angelägna att tillbe på rätt sätt, och de verkar uppskatta gudstjänsterna i templet.
3 Vi har fastat inför dig, säger de. Är du inte glad för det? Varför ser du inte våra offer? Varför hör du inte våra böner? Vi har böjt oss för dig, och du har inte ens lagt märke till det!Jag ska tala om anledningen för er. Ni lever i era syndiga nöjen till och med när ni fastar, och ni förtrycker dem som arbetar för er.
4 Vad har fastan för mening när ni fortsätter att strida och gräla? En sådan fasta tilltalar inte mig.
5 Inte betyder det något för mig att ni böjer era huvuden för mig en stund, ni svajar ju ändå hela tiden fram och tillbaka? Att ta på sig kläder av säcktyg och strö aska i håret, skulle det vara att fasta?
6 Nej, den fasta jag vill ha är att ni slutar upp med att förtrycka andra och behandla dem väl som arbetar åt er.
7 Jag vill att ni ska dela er mat med de hungriga och släppa in hjälplösa, utslagna och fattiga i era hem. Ge kläder till dem som fryser och håll er inte undan för släktingar som behöver er hjälp!
8 Om ni handlar så som Gud förväntar sig av er, ska han låta sin härlighet lysa över er. Er rättfärdighet ska leda er fram. Er godhet ska vara er sköld, och Herrens härlighet ska skydda er.
9 Då ska Herren svara omedelbart när ni ber till honom. Ja, här är jag, ska han svara. Allt ni behöver göra är att sluta förtrycka de svaga, att inte komma med grova anklagelser och sprida falska rykten!
10 Mätta de hungriga! Hjälp dem som är i svårigheter! Då ska ditt ljus lysa i mörkret, och mörkret omkring dig ska bli som en ljus dag.
11 Herren ska fortsätta att leda dig och låta dig få uppleva mycket gott. Du ska få vara frisk. Du kommer att vara som en nyvattnad trädgård, som en källa där vattnet aldrig tar slut.
12 Dina söner ska bygga upp städerna som så länge legat i ruiner, och du ska bli känd som 'Folket som bygger upp sina murar och städer'.
13 Om du håller sabbaten helig och inte gör bara vad du har lust med, utan är mån om den och talar med glädje om den som Herrens heliga dag, och om du ärar Herren med det som du gör och inte följer dina egna önskningar och inte talar lättsinnigt,
14 då ska Herren själv bli din glädje. Då ska jag ära dig över hela världen, så att du får alla de välsignelser jag lovade din förfader Jakob. Herren har talat.
