Isaías 44

Jehová es el único Dios

44 Ahora pues, oye, Jacob, siervo mío, y tú, Israel, a quien yo escogí. 2 Así dice Jehová, Hacedor tuyo, y el que te formó desde el vientre, el cual te ayudará: No temas, siervo mío Jacob, y tú, Jesurún, a quien yo escogí. 3 Porque yo derramaré aguas sobre el sequedal, y ríos sobre la tierra árida; mi Espíritu derramaré sobre tu generación, y mi bendición sobre tus renuevos; 4 y brotarán entre hierba, como sauces junto a las riberas de las aguas. 5 Este dirá: Yo soy de Jehová; el otro se llamará del nombre de Jacob, y otro escribirá con su mano: A Jehová, y se apellidará con el nombre de Israel.

6 Así dice Jehová Rey de Israel, y su Redentor, Jehová de los ejércitos: Yo soy el primero, y yo soy el postrero,(A) y fuera de mí no hay Dios. 7 ¿Y quién proclamará lo venidero, lo declarará, y lo pondrá en orden delante de mí, como hago yo desde que establecí el pueblo antiguo? Anúncienles lo que viene, y lo que está por venir. 8 No temáis, ni os amedrentéis; ¿no te lo hice oír desde la antigüedad, y te lo dije? Luego vosotros sois mis testigos. No hay Dios sino yo. No hay Fuerte; no conozco ninguno.

La insensatez de la idolatría

9 Los formadores de imágenes de talla, todos ellos son vanidad, y lo más precioso de ellos para nada es útil; y ellos mismos son testigos para su confusión, de que los ídolos no ven ni entienden. 10 ¿Quién formó un dios, o quién fundió una imagen que para nada es de provecho? 11 He aquí que todos los suyos serán avergonzados, porque los artífices mismos son hombres. Todos ellos se juntarán, se presentarán, se asombrarán, y serán avergonzados a una.

12 El herrero toma la tenaza, trabaja en las ascuas, le da forma con los martillos, y trabaja en ello con la fuerza de su brazo; luego tiene hambre, y le faltan las fuerzas; no bebe agua, y se desmaya. 13 El carpintero tiende la regla, lo señala con almagre, lo labra con los cepillos, le da figura con el compás, lo hace en forma de varón, a semejanza de hombre hermoso, para tenerlo en casa. 14 Corta cedros, y toma ciprés y encina, que crecen entre los árboles del bosque; planta pino, que se críe con la lluvia. 15 De él se sirve luego el hombre para quemar, y toma de ellos para calentarse; enciende también el horno, y cuece panes; hace además un dios, y lo adora; fabrica un ídolo, y se arrodilla delante de él. 16 Parte del leño quema en el fuego; con parte de él come carne, prepara un asado, y se sacia; después se calienta, y dice: ¡Oh! me he calentado, he visto el fuego; 17 y hace del sobrante un dios, un ídolo suyo; se postra delante de él, lo adora, y le ruega diciendo: Líbrame, porque mi dios eres tú.

18 No saben ni entienden; porque cerrados están sus ojos para no ver, y su corazón para no entender. 19 No discurre para consigo, no tiene sentido ni entendimiento para decir: Parte de esto quemé en el fuego, y sobre sus brasas cocí pan, asé carne, y la comí. ¿Haré del resto de él una abominación? ¿Me postraré delante de un tronco de árbol? 20 De ceniza se alimenta; su corazón engañado le desvía, para que no libre su alma, ni diga: ¿No es pura mentira lo que tengo en mi mano derecha?

Jehová es el Redentor de Israel

21 Acuérdate de estas cosas, oh Jacob, e Israel, porque mi siervo eres. Yo te formé, siervo mío eres tú; Israel, no me olvides. 22 Yo deshice como una nube tus rebeliones, y como niebla tus pecados; vuélvete a mí, porque yo te redimí. 23 Cantad loores, oh cielos, porque Jehová lo hizo; gritad con júbilo, profundidades de la tierra; prorrumpid, montes, en alabanza; bosque, y todo árbol que en él está; porque Jehová redimió a Jacob, y en Israel será glorificado.

24 Así dice Jehová, tu Redentor, que te formó desde el vientre: Yo Jehová, que lo hago todo, que extiendo solo los cielos, que extiendo la tierra por mí mismo; 25 que deshago las señales de los adivinos, y enloquezco a los agoreros; que hago volver atrás a los sabios, y desvanezco su sabiduría.(B) 26 Yo, el que despierta la palabra de su siervo, y cumple el consejo de sus mensajeros; que dice a Jerusalén: Serás habitada; y a las ciudades de Judá: Reconstruidas serán, y sus ruinas reedificaré; 27 que dice a las profundidades: Secaos, y tus ríos haré secar; 28 que dice de Ciro: Es mi pastor, y cumplirá todo lo que yo quiero,(C) al decir a Jerusalén: Serás edificada; y al templo: Serás fundado.

The Lord Is the Only God

44 The Lord says, “·People of Jacob, you are my servants [L Jacob, my servant]. Listen to me!
    ·People of Israel, I chose you [L Israel, my chosen; 41:8].”
2 This is what the Lord says, who made you,
    who formed you in ·your mother’s body [L the womb],
    who will help you:
“·People of Jacob, my servants [L Jacob, my servant], don’t be afraid.
    ·Israel [L Jeshurun; C the location of the Temple; Deut. 32:15; 33:5, 26], I chose you.
3 I will pour out water for the thirsty land
    and make streams flow on dry land.
I will pour out my Spirit ·into your children [on your descendants/offspring/seed]
    and my blessing on your ·descendants [offspring].
4 ·Your children [L They] will ·grow [sprout up] like a tree in the grass,
    like ·poplar trees [or willows] growing beside streams of water.
5 One person will say, ‘I belong to the Lord,’
    and another will use the name Jacob.
Another will ·sign his name [or write on his hand] ‘I am the Lord’s,’
    and another will ·use [call himself by] the name Israel.”

6 The Lord, the king of Israel,
    is the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts], who saves Israel.
This is what he says: “I am the ·beginning and the end [L first and the last].
    ·I am the only God [There is no god but me].
7 Who is like me?
    Let him ·come and prove [proclaim; claim] it.
Let him tell and explain all that has happened since I ·set up [established] my ancient people.
    He should also tell what will happen in the future.
8 Don’t be afraid! Don’t ·worry [fear]!
    ·I have always told you what will happen [Have I not proclaimed it long ago?].
You are my witnesses.
    ·There is no other [L Is there another…?] God but me.
I know of no other Rock; I am the only One.”

Idols Are Useless

9 Some people make idols, but they are ·worth nothing [nothing; void].
    People treasure them, but they are ·useless [worthless].
Those people are witnesses for the statues, but those people cannot see.
    They know nothing, so they will be ·ashamed [put to shame; C idolmakers are as ignorant as their idols].
10 Who makes a god or ·shapes [casts; molds] an idol
    that can do nothing for him?
11 [L Look; T Behold] ·The workmen who made them [L All his compansions] will be ·ashamed [put to shame],
    because ·they [L the craftsmen] are only human.
If they all would come together to stand against me,
    they would all be ·afraid [terrified] and ·ashamed [put to shame].

12 One ·workman [blacksmith] uses tools to heat iron,
    and he works over hot coals.
With his hammer he beats the metal and makes a statue,
    using his powerful arms.
But when he becomes hungry, he loses his ·power [strength].
    If he does not drink water, he becomes tired.

13 ·Another workman [A carpenter/craftsman] ·uses a line and a compass [L stretches a line]
    to draw on the wood.
Then he uses his chisels to cut a statue
    and his ·calipers [compass] to measure the statue.
In this way, the workman makes the wood ·look exactly like a person [like the pattern of a man],
    and this statue of a person ·sits [or dwells] in ·the house [or a shrine].
14 He cuts down cedars
    or cypress or oak trees.
·Those trees grew by their own power in [or He secures it for himself from] the forest.
    Or he plants a pine tree, and the rain makes it grow.
15 Then he burns the tree.
    He uses some of the wood for a fire to keep himself warm.
    He also starts a fire to bake his bread.
But he uses part of the wood to make a god, and then he worships it!
    He makes the idol and bows down to it [C showing the absurdity of worshiping an idol made from the same material he burns]!
16 The man burns half of the wood in the fire.
    He uses the fire to cook his meat,
    and he eats the meat until he is full.
He also burns the wood to keep himself warm. He says,
    “Good! Now I am warm. ·I can see because of the fire’s light [or …as I watch the fire; L I have seen the fire].”
17 But he makes a statue from the wood that is left and calls it his god.
    He bows down to it and worships it.
He prays to it and says,
    “You are my god. ·Save [Rescue] me!”
18 Those people ·don’t know what they are doing [or know nothing]. They ·don’t understand [are ignorant]!
    ·It is as if their eyes are covered [or They shut their eyes] so they can’t see.
    Their minds don’t understand.
19 ·They have not thought about these things [No one considers];
    they don’t understand.
They have never thought to themselves,
    “I burned half of the wood in the fire
    and used the hot coals to bake my bread.
    I cooked and ate my meat.
·And I used the wood that [or Should I use what…?] was left to make this ·hateful [abominable; detestable] thing.
    ·I am worshiping [or Should I bow down to…?] a block of wood!”
20 He ·doesn’t know what he is doing [L feeds on ashes; or eats on a pile of ashes];
    his ·confused mind [deluded/deceived heart] leads him ·the wrong way [astray].
He cannot ·save [rescue; T deliver] himself
    or say, “·This statue I am holding is a false god [L Is there not a lie in my right hand?].”

The Lord Is the True God

21 “·People of Jacob [L Jacob], remember these things!
    ·People of Israel [L Israel], remember you are my servants.
I ·made [shaped; formed] you, and you are my servants.
    So Israel, I will not forget you.
22 I have ·swept away [removed; or blotted out] your ·sins [offenses; transgressions] like a big cloud;
    I have removed your sins like a ·cloud that disappears into the air [mist].
Come back to me because I ·saved [redeemed] you.”

23 ·Skies [or Heavens], sing for joy because the Lord ·did great things [or acts; intervenes; L has done this]!
    Earth, shout for joy, even in your deepest parts!
·Sing [Break into song], you mountains, with thanks to God.
    Sing, too, you forests and all your trees!
The Lord ·saved [redeemed] ·the people of Jacob [L Jacob]!
    He ·showed his glory when he saved [L is glorified in] Israel.
24 This is what the Lord ·who saved you [your redeemer] says,
    the one who formed you in ·your mother’s body [L the womb]:
“I, the Lord, made everything,
    stretching out the skies by myself
    and spreading out the earth all alone.
25 I ·show that the signs of the lying prophets are false [L frustrate the signs of babblers/or empty talkers];
    I make fools of ·those who do magic [diviners].
I ·confuse even [reverse what is said by] the wise;
    they think they know much, but I make ·them look foolish [their knowledge into foolishness].
26 I ·make the messages of my servants come true [confirm my servants’ words];
    I make the ·advice [or prophecies] of my messengers come true.
I say to Jerusalem,
    ‘·People will live in you again [L It will be inhabited]!’
I say to the towns of Judah,
    ‘You will be built again!’
I say to Jerusalem’s ruins,
    ‘I will ·repair you [raise you up].’
27 I tell the deep waters, ‘Become dry!
    I will make your streams become dry!’
28 I say of Cyrus [C the Persian king (ruled 550–530 bc) who allowed Israel to return from exile; 41:2; 44:28—45:6; 46:11; 48:14–16], ‘He is my shepherd
    and will ·do [fulfill] all that I want him to do.
    He will say to Jerusalem, “You will be built again!”
He will tell the Temple, “Your foundations will be rebuilt.”’”

44 “Now listen, Ya‘akov my servant,
Isra’el whom I have chosen:
2 Thus says Adonai, who made you,
formed you in the womb, and will help you:
Don’t be afraid, Ya‘akov my servant,
Yeshurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour my Spirit on your descendants,
my blessing on your offspring.
4 They will spring up among the grass
like willows on the riverbanks.
5 One will say, ‘I belong to Adonai.’
Another will be called by the name of Ya‘akov.
Yet another will write that he belongs to Adonai.
and adopt the surname Isra’el.”

6 Thus says Adonai, Isra’el’s King
and Redeemer, Adonai-Tzva’ot:
“I am the first, and I am the last;
besides me there is no God.
7 Who is like me? Let him speak out!
Let him show me clearly what has been happening
since I set up the eternal people;
let him foretell future signs and events.
8 Don’t be frightened, don’t be afraid —
Didn’t I tell you this long ago?
I foretold it, and you are my witnesses.
Is there any God besides me?
There is no other Rock — I know of none.”

9 All idol-makers amount to nothing;
their precious productions profit no one;
and their witnesses, to their own shame,
neither see nor understand.
10 Who would fashion a god or cast an image
that profits no one anything?
11 All involved will be ashamed,
but more than anyone else, the people who made them.
Let them all be assembled, let them stand up;
let them fear and be shamed together.

12 A blacksmith makes a tool over burning coals;
with his strong arm he shapes it with hammers.
But when he gets hungry, his strength fails;
if he doesn’t drink water, he grows tired.

13 A carpenter takes his measurements,
sketches the shape with a stylus,
planes the wood, checks it with calipers,
and carves it into the shape of a man;
and, since it is honored like a man,
of course it has to live in a house.
14 He goes to chop down cedars;
he takes an evergreen and an oak;
he especially tends one tree in the forest,
plants a pine for the rain to nourish.
15 In time, when it’s ready for use as fuel,
he takes some of it to keep himself warm
and burns some more to bake bread.
Then he makes a god and worships it,
carves it into an idol and falls down before it.
16 So half of it he burns in the fire;
with that half he roasts meat and eats his fill;
he warms himself; says, “It feels so good,
getting warm while watching the flames!”
17 With the rest of the log he fashions a god,
a carved image, then falls down before it;
he worships it and prays to it.
“Save me,” he says, “for you are my god!”

18 Such people know nothing, understand nothing.
Their eyes are sealed shut, so that they can’t see;
their hearts too, so they can’t understand.
19 Not one thinks to himself or has the knowledge
or the discernment to say,
“I burned half of it in the fire,
baked bread on its coals, roasted meat and ate it.
Should I now make the rest an abomination?
Should I prostrate myself to a tree trunk?”
20 He is relying on ashes!
A deceived heart has led him astray;
so that now he won’t save himself, just won’t say,
“This thing in my hand is a fraud!”

21 “Keep these matters in mind, Ya‘akov,
for you, Isra’el, are my servant.
I formed you, you are my own servant;
Isra’el, don’t forget me.
22 Like a thick cloud, I wipe away your offenses;
like a cloud, your sins.
Come back to me, for I have redeemed you.”

23 Sing, you heavens, for Adonai has done it!
Shout, you depths of the earth!
Mountains, break out into song,
along with every tree in the forest!
For Adonai has redeemed Ya‘akov;
he glorifies himself in Isra’el.

24 Here is what Adonai says, your Redeemer,
he who formed you in the womb:
“I am Adonai, who makes all things,
who stretched out the heavens all alone,
who spread out the earth all by myself.
25 I frustrate false prophets and their omens,
I make fools of diviners,
I drive back the sages
and make their wisdom look silly.
26 I confirm my servants’ prophecies
and make my messengers’ plans succeed.
I say of Yerushalayim: ‘She will be lived in,’
of the cities of Y’hudah, ‘They will be rebuilt;
I will restore their ruins.’
27 I say to the deep sea, ‘Dry up!
I will make your streams run dry.’
28 I say of Koresh, ‘He is my shepherd,
he will do everything I want.
He will say of Yerushalayim,
“You will be rebuilt,”
and of the temple,
“Your foundation will be laid.”’”
