El Señor es el único Dios

44 »Mas ahora escucha, Jacob, siervo Mío,
Israel, a quien Yo he escogido(A).
2 -»Así dice el Señor que te creó,
Que te formó desde el seno materno, y que te ayudará:
“No temas(B), Jacob, siervo Mío(C),
Ni tú, Jesurún[a](D), a quien he escogido.
3 -”Porque derramaré agua sobre la tierra sedienta[b],
Y torrentes sobre la tierra seca(E).
Derramaré Mi Espíritu sobre tu posteridad[c](F),
Y Mi bendición sobre tus descendientes(G).
4 -”Ellos brotarán entre la hierba[d]
Como sauces junto a corrientes de agua(H)”.
5 -»Este dirá: “Yo soy del Señor”,
Otro invocará[e] el nombre de Jacob,
Y otro escribirá en[f] su mano: “Del Señor(I) soy”,
Y se llamará con el nombre de Israel.
6 ¶»Así dice el Señor, el Rey(J) de Israel,
Y su Redentor(K), el Señor de los ejércitos:
“Yo soy el primero y Yo soy el último(L),
Y fuera de Mí no hay Dios(M).
7 -”¿Y quién como Yo? Que lo proclame y lo declare.
Sí, que en orden lo relate ante[g] Mí,
Desde que establecí la antigua nación[h].
Que les anuncien las cosas venideras
Y lo que va a acontecer(N).
8 -”No tiemblen ni teman;
¿No se[i] lo he hecho oír y lo he anunciado desde hace tiempo(O)?
Ustedes son Mis testigos(P).
¿Hay otro dios fuera de Mí(Q),
O hay otra Roca(R)?
No conozco ninguna”».

Insensatez de la idolatría

9 Todos los que dan forma a un ídolo[j] son nada[k], y sus cosas más preciadas de nada sirven. Aun sus propios testigos no ven ni entienden, por eso serán avergonzados(S). 10 ¿Quién ha dado forma a un dios o fundido un ídolo[l] para no tener ganancia(T)? 11 Ciertamente todos sus compañeros serán avergonzados, pues los artífices son solo hombres. Que se reúnan todos, que se levanten, que tiemblen, que sean a una avergonzados(U).

12 El herrero hace un instrumento cortante[m]; lo trabaja sobre las brasas, lo forma con martillo y lo forja con su brazo fuerte(V). Después[n] siente hambre y flaquean sus fuerzas[o]; no bebe agua, y desfallece. 13 El carpintero extiende el cordel de medir, traza el diseño[p] con tiza roja, lo labra con cinceles, lo traza con el compás(W) y le da[q] forma de hombre(X) y belleza humana para colocarlo en una casa(Y).

14 Corta cedros para sí, toma un ciprés[r] o una encina, y hace que sea fuerte entre los árboles del bosque. Planta un pino y la lluvia lo hace crecer. 15 Luego sirve para que el hombre haga fuego, y toma uno y se calienta; también hace fuego para cocer pan. Además, hace un dios y lo adora; hace de él una imagen tallada[s](Z) y se postra delante de ella(AA). 16 La mitad del leño quema en el fuego; sobre esta mitad prepara un asado, come carne y se sacia. También se calienta, y dice: «¡Ah!, me he calentado, he visto la llama». 17 Y del resto hace un dios, su ídolo[t]. Se postra delante de él, lo adora(AB), y le ruega, diciendo: «Líbrame, pues tú eres mi dios(AC)».

18 Ellos no saben ni entienden(AD), porque Él ha cerrado[u] sus ojos para que no vean y su corazón para que no comprendan(AE). 19 Ninguno reflexiona[v]; no tienen conocimiento ni inteligencia(AF) para decir: «He quemado la mitad en el fuego, y también he cocido pan sobre sus brasas. He asado carne y la he comido; y del resto ¿haré una abominación(AG)? ¿Me postraré[w] ante un pedazo de madera?». 20 Se alimenta de cenizas[x](AH); el corazón engañado le ha extraviado(AI). A sí mismo[y] no se puede librar, ni decir: «¿No es mentira(AJ) lo que tengo en mi diestra?».

Dios perdona y redime

21 ¶«Recuerda estas cosas(AK), Jacob,
Y tú, Israel, porque eres Mi siervo.
Yo te he formado, siervo Mío eres(AL).
Israel, no me olvidaré de ti(AM).
22 -»He disipado como una densa nube tus transgresiones(AN),
Y como espesa niebla[z] tus pecados.
Vuélvete a Mí(AO), porque Yo te he redimido(AP)».
23 Griten de júbilo, cielos, porque el Señor lo ha hecho.
Griten de alegría, profundidades de la tierra(AQ).
Prorrumpan, montes, en gritos de júbilo(AR),
Y el bosque, y todo árbol que en él hay(AS),
Porque el Señor ha redimido a Jacob(AT)
Y ha mostrado Su gloria[aa] en Israel(AU).
24 ¶Así dice el Señor, tu Redentor(AV),
El que te formó desde el seno materno(AW):
«Yo, el Señor, creador de todo,
Que extiendo los cielos Yo solo
Y afirmo[ab] la tierra sin ayuda[ac](AX).
25 -»Hago fallar los pronósticos[ad] de los impostores[ae](AY),
Hago[af] necios a los adivinos,
Hago retroceder a los sabios,
Y convierto[ag] en necedad su sabiduría(AZ).
26 -»Yo soy el que confirmo la palabra de Su siervo,
Y cumplo[ah] el propósito de Sus mensajeros(BA);
El que dice de Jerusalén: “Será habitada”;
Y de las ciudades de Judá(BB): “Serán reedificadas(BC),
Y sus ruinas levantaré”.
27 -»Yo soy el que dice a la profundidad del mar: “Sécate”;
Y Yo secaré tus ríos(BD).
28 -»El que dice de Ciro(BE): “Él es Mi pastor,
Y él cumplirá todos Mis deseos”,
Y dice[ai] de Jerusalén: “Será reedificada(BF)”,
Y al templo: “Serán echados tus cimientos”».

Israel, el escogido

44 »Pero ahora escucha, Jacob, mi siervo,
    Israel, a quien he escogido.
2 Así dice el Señor, el que te hizo,
    el que te formó en el seno materno
    y te brinda su ayuda:
“No temas, Jacob, mi siervo,
    Jesurún, a quien he escogido,
3 que regaré con agua la tierra sedienta
    y con arroyos el suelo seco;
derramaré mi Espíritu sobre tu descendencia
    y mi bendición sobre tus vástagos,
4 y brotarán como hierba en un prado,
    como sauces junto a arroyos.
5 Uno dirá: ‘Pertenezco al Señor’;
    otro llevará el nombre de Jacob
y otro escribirá en su mano: ‘Yo soy del Señor’
    y tomará para sí el nombre de Israel”.

El Señor y los ídolos

6 »Así dice el Señor, el Señor de los Ejércitos,
    Rey y Redentor de Israel:
“Yo soy el Primero y el Último;
    fuera de mí no hay otro dios.
7 ¿Quién es como yo?
    Que lo diga.
    Que declare lo que ha ocurrido
desde que establecí a mi antiguo pueblo;
    que exponga ante mí lo que está por venir,
    que anuncie lo que va a suceder.
8 No tiemblen ni se asusten.
    ¿Acaso no lo anuncié y predije hace tiempo?
Ustedes son mis testigos.
    ¿Hay algún Dios fuera de mí?
No, no hay otra Roca;
    no conozco ninguna”».

9 Los que fabrican imágenes no son nada;
    inútiles son sus obras más preciadas.
Para su propia vergüenza,
    sus propios testigos no ven ni conocen.
10 ¿Quién modela una imagen o funde un ídolo,
    que no sirve para nada?
11 Todos sus devotos quedarán avergonzados;
    ¡simples mortales son los artesanos!
Que todos se reúnan y comparezcan;
    ¡aterrados y avergonzados quedarán todos ellos!

12 El herrero toma una herramienta
    y con ella trabaja sobre las brasas;
con martillo modela un ídolo,
    con la fuerza de su brazo lo forja.
Siente hambre y pierde las fuerzas;
    no bebe agua y desfallece.
13 El carpintero mide con un cordel,
    hace un boceto con un estilete,
lo trabaja con el escoplo
    y lo traza con el compás.
Le da forma humana;
    le imprime la belleza de un ser humano,
    para que habite en un santuario.
14 Derriba los cedros,
    escoge un ciprés o un roble
y lo deja crecer entre los árboles del bosque;
    o planta un pino, que la lluvia hace crecer.
15 A la gente le sirve de combustible,
    toma una parte para calentarse;
    enciende un fuego y hornea pan.
Pero también labra un dios y lo adora;
    hace una imagen y se postra ante ella.
16 La mitad de la madera la quema en el fuego,
    sobre esa mitad prepara su comida;
    asa la carne y se sacia.
También se calienta y dice:
    «¡Ah! Ya voy entrando en calor, mientras contemplo las llamas».
17 Con el resto hace un dios, su ídolo;
    se postra ante él y la adora.
Y suplicante dice:
    «Sálvame, pues tú eres mi dios».
18 No saben nada, no entienden nada;
    sus ojos están velados y no ven;
    su corazón está cerrado y no entienden.
19 Ninguno se detiene a pensar,
    les falta conocimiento y entendimiento para decir:
«Usé la mitad para combustible;
    incluso horneé pan sobre las brasas,
    asé carne y la comí.
¿Y haré algo abominable con lo que queda?
    ¿Me postraré ante un pedazo de madera?».
20 Se alimentan de cenizas, se dejan engañar por sus ilusos corazones,
    no pueden salvarse a sí mismos ni decir:
    «¡Lo que tengo en mi diestra es una mentira!».

21 «Recuerda estas cosas, Jacob,
    porque tú eres mi siervo, Israel.
Yo te formé, tú eres mi siervo;
    Israel, yo no te olvidaré.
22 Como si fuera una nube he borrado tus transgresiones
    y tus pecados, como la bruma de la mañana.
Vuelve a mí,
    que te he redimido».

23 ¡Canten de alegría, cielos, que esto lo ha hecho el Señor!
    ¡Griten con fuerte voz, profundidades de la tierra!
¡Prorrumpan en canciones, montañas
    y bosques, con todos sus árboles!
Porque el Señor ha redimido a Jacob,
    Dios ha manifestado su gloria en Israel.

Jerusalén vuelve a ser habitada

24 «Así dice el Señor, tu Redentor,
    quien te formó en el seno materno:

»Yo soy el Señor, que ha hecho todas las cosas,
    yo solo desplegué los cielos
    y expandí la tierra.
    ¿Quién estaba conmigo?
25 Yo frustro las señales de los falsos profetas
    y ridiculizo a los adivinos;
yo hago retroceder a los sabios
    y convierto su sabiduría en necedad.
26 Yo confirmo la palabra de mi siervo
    y cumplo el consejo de mis mensajeros.

»Yo digo que Jerusalén será habitada,
    que los pueblos de Judá serán reconstruidos
    y que restauraré sus ruinas.
27 Yo digo a las aguas profundas: “¡Séquense!”.
    Y ordeno que se sequen sus corrientes.
28 Yo digo de Ciro: “Él es mi pastor;
    él cumplirá todos mis deseos;
dispondrá que Jerusalén sea reconstruida
    y que se pongan los cimientos del Templo”».

44 1 The Lord promiseth comfort, and that he will assemble his Church of divers nations. 9 The vanity of Idols. 17 The beastliness of idolaters.

1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant, and Israel whom I have chosen.

2 Thus saith the Lord, that made thee, and formed [a]thee from the womb: he will help thee. Fear not, O Jacob, my servant, and thou righteous [b]whom I have chosen.

3 For I will pour water upon the [c]thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thy buds.

4 And they [d]shall grow as among the grass, and as the willows by the rivers of waters.

5 One shall say, I am the Lord’s: another [e]shall be called by the name of Jacob: and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and name himself by the name of Israel.

6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel and his redeemer, the Lord of hosts, [f]I am the first, and I am the last, and without me is there no God.

7 And who is like me, that shall [g]call and shall declare it, and set [h]it in order before me, since I appointed the [i]ancient people? and what is at hand, and what things are to come? let [j]them show unto them.

8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee of old, and have declared it? [k]you are even my witnesses, whether there be a God beside me, and that there is no God that I know not.

9 All they that make an image, are vanity, and [l]their delectable things shall nothing profit: and they are their own witnesses, [m]that they see not nor know: therefore they shall be confounded.

10 Who hath made a [n]god, or molten an image, that is [o]profitable for nothing?

11 Behold, all that are of the [p]fellowship thereof, shall be confounded: for the workmen themselves are men: let them all be gathered together, and [q]stand up, yet they shall fear, and be confounded together.

12 The smith taketh an instrument, and worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms, yea, he is [r]an hungered, and his strength faileth, he drinketh no water, and is faint.

13 The carpenter stretcheth forth a line, he fashioneth it with a red thread, he planeth it, and he portrayeth it with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, and according to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in [s]an house.

14 He will hew him down cedars, and take the pine tree and the oak, and taketh courage among the trees of the forest; he planteth a fir tree, and the rain doth nourish it.

15 And man burneth thereof; for he will take thereof, and [t]warm himself: he also kindleth it, and baketh bread, yet he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it an idol, and boweth unto it.

16 He burneth the half thereof even in the fire, and upon the half thereof he [u]eateth flesh; he roasteth the roast, and is satisfied; also he warmeth himself and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have been at the fire.

17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his idol; he boweth unto it, and worshippeth and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

18 They have not known, nor understood: [v]for God hath shut their eyes that they cannot see, and their heart, that they cannot understand.

19 And none [w]considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burnt half of it, even in the fire, and have baked bread also upon the coals thereof: I have roasted flesh, and eaten it, and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I bow to the stock of a tree?

20 He feedeth [x]of ashes: a seduced heart hath deceived him, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

21 [y]Remember these (O Jacob and Israel) for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel forget me not.

22 I have put away thy transgressions like a cloud, and thy sins as a mist; turn unto me, for I have redeemed thee.

23 [z]Rejoice ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it; shout, ye lower parts of the earth; burst forth into praises, ye mountains, O forest and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and will be glorified in Israel.

24 Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that made all things, that spread out the heavens alone, and stretched out the earth by myself.

25 I destroy the [aa]tokens of the soothsayers, and make them that conjecture, fools, and turn the wise men backward, and make their knowledge foolishness.

26 ¶ He confirmeth the word of his [ab]servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers, saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited: and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built up, and I will repair the decayed places thereof.

27 He saith to the [ac]deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy floods.

28 He saith to [ad]Cyrus, Thou art my shepherd, and he shall perform all my desire: saying also to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built, and to the Temple, Thy foundation shall be surely laid.

  9. Isaiah 44:7 God calleth the Israelites ancient, because he preferred them to all others in his eternal election.
  10. Isaiah 44:7 Meaning, their idols.
  11. Isaiah 44:8 Read Isa. 43:10.
  12. Isaiah 44:9 Whatsoever they bestow upon their idols, to make them to seem glorious.
  13. Isaiah 44:9 That is, the idolaters seeing their idols blind, most needs be witnesses of their own blindness, and feeling that they are not able to help them, must confess that they have no power.
  14. Isaiah 44:10 Meaning, that whatsoever is made by the hand of man, if he be esteemed as God, is most detestable.
  15. Isaiah 44:10 Whereby appeareth their blasphemy, which call images the books of the laity, seeing that they are not only here called unprofitable, but Isa 41:24 abominable, and Jeremiah calleth them the work of errors, Jer. 10:15; Habakkuk, a lying teacher, Hab. 2:18.
  16. Isaiah 44:11 That is, which by any way consent either to the making or worshipping.
  17. Isaiah 44:11 Signifying, that the multitude shall not then save the idolaters, when God will take vengeance, although they excuse themselves thereby among men.
  18. Isaiah 44:12 He describeth the raging affection of the idolaters, which forget their own necessities to set forth their devotion toward their idols.
  19. Isaiah 44:13 To place it in some Temple.
  20. Isaiah 44:15 He setteth forth the obstinacy and malice of the idolaters, which though they see by daily experience that their idols are no better than the rest of the matter whereof they are made, yet they refuse the one part, and make a god of the other, as the Papists make their cake god, and the rest of their idols.
  21. Isaiah 44:16 That is, he either maketh a table or trenchers.
  22. Isaiah 44:18 The Prophet giveth here an answer to all them that wonder how it is possible that any should be so blind to commit such abomination, saying, that God hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their hearts.
  23. Isaiah 44:19 Hebrew, turneth.
  24. Isaiah 44:20 He is abused as one that would eat ashes, thinking to satisfy his hunger.
  25. Isaiah 44:21 Showing that man’s heart is most inclined to idolatry, and therefore he warneth his people by these examples, that they should not cleave to any but to the living God, when they should be among the idolaters.
  26. Isaiah 44:23 He showeth that the work of the Lord toward his people shall be so great, that the insensible creatures shall be moved therewith.
  27. Isaiah 44:25 He armeth them against the soothsayers of Babylon, which would have borne them in hand, that they knew by the stars, that God would not deliver them, and that Babylon should stand.
  28. Isaiah 44:26 Of Isaiah and the rest of his Prophets, which did assure the Church of God’s favor and deliverance.
  29. Isaiah 44:27 He showeth that God’s work should be no less notable in this their deliverance, than when he brought them out of Egypt, through the sea.
  30. Isaiah 44:28 To assure them of their deliverance, he nameth the person by whom it should be, more than an hundred years before he was born.
