Isaías profetiza la liberación de Jerusalén(A)
37 Cuando el rey Ezequías escuchó esto, se rasgó las vestiduras, se vistió de luto y fue al Templo del Señor. 2 Además, envió a Eliaquín, administrador del palacio, al cronista Sebna y a los sacerdotes más ancianos, todos vestidos de luto, para hablar con el profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz. 3 Y estos dijeron a Isaías: «Así dice Ezequías: “Hoy es un día de angustia, castigo y deshonra, como cuando los hijos están a punto de nacer y no se tienen fuerzas para darlos a luz. 4 Tal vez el Señor tu Dios oiga las palabras del comandante en jefe, a quien su señor, el rey de Asiria, envió para insultar al Dios viviente. ¡Que el Señor tu Dios lo castigue por las palabras que ha oído! Eleva, pues, una oración por el remanente del pueblo que aún sobrevive”».
5 Cuando los funcionarios del rey Ezequías fueron a ver a Isaías, 6 este les dijo: «Díganle a su señor que así dice el Señor: “No temas por las blasfemias que has oído y que han pronunciado contra mí los subalternos del rey de Asiria. 7 ¡Mira! Voy a poner un espíritu en él, de manera que cuando oiga cierto rumor regrese a su propio país. Allí haré que lo maten a filo de espada”».
8 Cuando el comandante en jefe se enteró de que el rey de Asiria había salido de Laquis, se retiró y encontró al rey luchando contra Libná.
9 Luego Senaquerib recibió el informe de que Tiracá, rey de Cus, había salido para luchar contra él. Al enterarse de esto, envió mensajeros a Ezequías 10 para que le dijeran: «Tú, Ezequías, rey de Judá: No dejes que tu Dios, en quien confías, te engañe cuando dice: “No caerá Jerusalén en manos del rey de Asiria”. 11 Sin duda te habrás enterado de lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria en todos los países, destruyéndolos por completo. ¿Y acaso vas tú a librarte? 12 ¿Libraron sus dioses a las naciones que mis antepasados han destruido: Gozán, Jarán, Résef y la gente de Edén que vivía en Telasar? 13 ¿Dónde están el rey de Jamat, el rey de Arfad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvayin, de Hená o Ivá?».
Oración de Ezequías(B)
14 Ezequías tomó la carta de mano de los mensajeros y la leyó. Luego subió al Templo del Señor, la desplegó delante del Señor, 15 y oró así: 16 «Señor de los Ejércitos, Dios de Israel, entronizado sobre los querubines: solo tú eres el Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra. Tú has hecho los cielos y la tierra. 17 Presta atención, Señor, y escucha; abre tus ojos, Señor, y mira; escucha todas las palabras que Senaquerib ha mandado a decir para insultar al Dios viviente.
18 »Es verdad, Señor, que los reyes asirios han asolado todas estas naciones y sus tierras. 19 Han arrojado al fuego sus dioses y los han destruido, porque no eran dioses, sino solo madera y piedra, obra de manos humanas. 20 Ahora, pues, Señor y Dios nuestro, sálvanos de su mano, para que todos los reinos de la tierra sepan que solo tú, Señor, eres Dios».[a]
Muerte de Senaquerib(C)
21 Entonces Isaías, hijo de Amoz, envió este mensaje a Ezequías:
«Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: Por cuanto me has rogado respecto a Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, 22 esta es la palabra que yo, el Señor, he pronunciado contra él:
»La virginal hija de Sión
te desprecia y se burla de ti.
La hija de Jerusalén
menea la cabeza al verte huir.
23 ¿A quién has insultado?
¿Contra quién has blasfemado?
¿Contra quién has alzado la voz
y levantado los ojos con orgullo?
¡Contra el Santo de Israel!
24 Has enviado a tus siervos
a insultar al Señor, diciendo:
“Con mis numerosos carros de combate
escalé las cumbres de las montañas,
las laderas del Líbano.
Talé sus cedros más altos,
sus cipreses más selectos.
Alcancé sus cumbres más lejanas
y sus bosques más frondosos.
25 Cavé pozos en tierras extranjeras[b]
y en esas aguas apagué mi sed.
Con las plantas de mis pies
sequé todos los ríos de Egipto”.
26 »¿No te has dado cuenta?
Hace mucho tiempo que lo he preparado.
Desde tiempo atrás lo vengo planeando
y ahora lo he llevado a cabo;
por eso tú has dejado en ruinas
a las ciudades fortificadas.
27 Sus habitantes, impotentes,
están desalentados y avergonzados.
Son como plantas en el campo,
como tiernos pastos verdes,
como hierba que brota sobre el techo
y que se quema[c] antes de crecer.
28 »Yo sé bien cuándo te sientas,
cuándo sales, cuándo entras
y cuánto ruges contra mí.
29 Porque has rugido contra mí
y tu insolencia ha llegado a mis oídos,
te pondré una argolla en la nariz
y un freno en la boca.
Además, por el mismo camino por donde viniste
te haré regresar.
30 »Esta será la señal para ti, Ezequías:
»Este año comerán lo que crezca por sí solo,
y el segundo año lo que de allí brote.
Pero al tercer año sembrarán y cosecharán,
plantarán viñas y comerán su fruto.
31 Una vez más los sobrevivientes de la tribu de Judá
echarán raíces abajo y, arriba, darán fruto.
32 Porque de Jerusalén saldrá un remanente,
del monte Sión un grupo de sobrevivientes.
Esto lo hará mi celo,
celo del Señor de los Ejércitos.
33 »Yo, el Señor, declaro esto acerca del rey de Asiria:
»“No entrará en esta ciudad
ni lanzará contra ella una sola flecha.
No se enfrentará a ella con escudos,
ni construirá contra ella una rampa de asalto.
34 Volverá por el mismo camino que vino;
¡en esta ciudad no entrará!”.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
35 Por mi honor y por consideración a David mi siervo,
defenderé esta ciudad y la salvaré».
36 Entonces el ángel del Señor salió y mató a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres del campamento asirio. A la mañana siguiente, cuando los demás se levantaron, allí estaban tendidos todos los cadáveres. 37 Así que Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, levantó el campamento y se retiró. Volvió a Nínive y permaneció allí.
38 Pero un día, mientras adoraba en el templo de su dios Nisroc, sus hijos Adramélec y Sarézer lo mataron a espada y escaparon a la tierra de Ararat. Y su hijo Esarjadón lo sucedió en el trono.

37 När kung Hiskia hörde detta, rev han sönder sina kläder, höljde sig i säcktyg och gick in i Herrens hus. 2 Och han sände överhovmästaren Eljakim, skrivaren Shebna och de äldste bland prästerna, höljda i säcktyg, till profeten Jesaja, Amos son. 3 De sade till honom: "Så säger Hiskia: Denna dag är en nödens, bestraffningens och föraktets dag, ty fostren har kommit fram till födelsen, men det finns ingen kraft att föda. 4 Kanske skall Herren, din Gud, höra Rab-Sakes ord, som hans herre, kungen i Assyrien, har sänt för att håna den levande Guden, så att han straffar honom för dessa ord som Herren, din Gud, har hört. Bed en bön för den kvarleva som ännu finns."
5 När kung Hiskias tjänare kom till Jesaja, 6 sade Jesaja till dem: "Så skall ni säga till er herre: Så säger Herren: Frukta inte för de ord som du har hört och som den assyriske kungens tjänare har hädat mig med. 7 Se, jag skall låta en ande verka i honom, så att han vänder tillbaka till sitt land, när han får höra ett rykte. Och jag skall låta honom falla för svärd i sitt eget land."
8 Rab-Sake vände tillbaka och fann den assyriske kungen upptagen med att belägra Libna. Han hade nämligen hört att kungen hade brutit upp från Lakish. 9 Men när Sanherib fick höra sägas om Tirhaka, kungen i Nubien, att denne hade dragit ut för att strida mot honom, skickade han, så snart han hörde detta, sändebud till Hiskia med detta budskap: 10 "Så skall ni säga till Hiskia, kungen i Juda: Låt inte din Gud, som du förtröstar på, bedra dig så att du tänker: Jerusalem skall inte falla i den assyriske kungens hand. 11 Du har ju hört vad kungarna i Assyrien har gjort med alla länder, hur de grundligt har förstört dem. Och du skulle bli räddad! 12 Har de folk som mina fäder fördärvade, Gozan, Haran, Resef och Edens barn i Telassar, blivit räddade av sina gudar? 13 Var finns Hamats kung och Arpads kung och kungen över Sefarvajims stad, över Hena och Iva?"
Hiskias bön
14 När Hiskia hade tagit emot brevet av budbärarna och läst det, gick han upp i Herrens hus och bredde ut det inför Herrens ansikte. 15 Och Hiskia bad till Herren och sade: 16 " Herre Sebaot, Israels Gud, du som tronar på keruberna, endast du är Gud över alla riken på jorden. Du har gjort himmelen och jorden. 17 Herre, böj ditt öra och hör. Herre, öppna dina ögon och se. Hör alla Sanheribs ord, som han har talat för att håna den levande Guden. 18 Det är sant, Herre, att kungarna i Assyrien har ödelagt alla länder, också sitt eget land. 19 Och de har kastat deras gudar i elden, ty de var inga gudar utan verk av människohänder, trä och sten. Därför kunde de förgöra dem. 20 Men nu, Herre, vår Gud, rädda oss ur hans hand, så att alla riken på jorden förstår att du är Herren,[a] endast du."
21 Då sände Jesaja, Amos son, detta bud till Hiskia: "Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Därför att du har bett till mig angående Sanherib, kungen i Assyrien, 22 är detta det ord som Herren har talat om honom:
Hon föraktar dig och hånar dig,
jungfrun, dottern Sion.
Hon skakar på huvudet åt dig,
dottern Jerusalem.
23 Vem har du hånat och hädat,
mot vem har du upphöjt din röst
och högmodigt lyft upp dina ögon?
Jo, mot Israels Helige.
24 Genom dina tjänare hånade du Herren,
när du sade: "Med mina många vagnar
drog jag upp på bergens höjder,
till Libanons avlägsna trakter.
Jag högg ner dess höga cedrar
och utvalda cypresser.
Jag trängde fram till dess högsta höjder
och dess frodiga skog.
25 Jag grävde brunnar och drack vatten,
med mina fötter torkade jag ut alla Egyptens strömmar."
26 Har du inte hört att jag för länge sedan gjorde detta,
att jag i forntidens dagar bestämde det,
och nu har jag låtit det komma.
Du fick makt att ödelägga befästa städer
och göra dem till ruinhögar.
27 Deras invånare blev maktlösa,
de blev förskräckta och stod med skam.
Det gick med dem som med gräset på marken
och den späda grönskan,
som med gräset på taken
och som säden som förbränns
innan det växer upp.
28 Jag vet om du sitter,
om du går ut eller kommer in,
och hur du rasar mot mig.
29 Därför att du rasar mot mig
och ditt högmod har nått mina öron,
skall jag sätta min krok i din näsa
och mitt betsel i din mun
och föra dig tillbaka samma väg som du kom.
30 Detta skall för dig vara tecknet: Man skall detta år äta vad som växer upp av spillsäd, och nästa år av självvuxen säd, men det tredje året skall ni så och skörda, plantera vingårdar och äta deras frukt. 31 Och de räddade av Juda hus som blivit kvar, skall på nytt skjuta rot nertill och bära frukt upptill. 32 Ty från Jerusalem skall en kvarleva gå ut, de räddade från Sions berg. Herren Sebaots nitälskan skall göra detta. 33 Därför säger Herren så om kungen i Assyrien:
Han skall inte komma in i denna stad
eller skjuta någon pil ditin.
Han skall inte närma sig den bakom en sköld
eller kasta upp en vall mot den.
34 Han skall vända tillbaka samma väg han kom.
In i denna stad skall han inte komma, säger Herren.
35 Ty jag skall skydda och rädda denna stad
för min och min tjänare Davids skull."
Sanheribs fall
36 Och Herrens ängel gick ut och slog 185 000 i assyriernas läger, och när man steg upp tidigt följande morgon, se, då låg där fullt av döda kroppar. 37 Då bröt Sanherib, kungen i Assyrien, upp och vände tillbaka. Han stannade sedan i Nineve. 38 Och när han en gång tillbad i sin gud Nisroks tempel, blev han dödad med svärd av sina söner Adrammelek och Sareser. De flydde sedan till Ararats land. Och hans son Esarhaddon blev kung efter honom.

37 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
4 It may be the Lord thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.
5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?
13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.
15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying,
16 O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
17 Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear; open thine eyes, O Lord, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
18 Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
20 Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, even thou only.
21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:
22 This is the word which the Lord hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
24 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.
25 I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
26 Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.
27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
28 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
29 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
30 And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
31 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:
32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.
33 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.
35 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
36 Then the angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
