36 E aconteceu, no ano décimo quarto do rei Ezequias, que Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, subiu contra todas as cidades fortes de Judá e as tomou. 2 Então, o rei da Assíria enviou Rabsaqué, desde Laquis a Jerusalém, ao rei Ezequias com um grande exército; e ele parou junto ao cano do tanque mais alto, junto ao caminho do campo do lavandeiro. 3 Então, saiu a ele Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o mordomo, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o chanceler.
4 E Rabsaqué lhes disse: Ora, dizei a Ezequias: Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: Que confiança é esta que tu manifestas? 5 Bem posso eu dizer: teu conselho e poder para a guerra são apenas vãs palavras; em quem, pois, agora, confias, que contra mim te rebelas? 6 Eis que confias naquele bordão de cana quebrada, a saber, no Egito, que, se alguém se apoiar nele, lhe entrará pela mão e lha furará; assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para com todos os que nele confiam. 7 Mas, se me disseres: No Senhor, nosso Deus, confiamos, porventura, não é esse aquele cujos altos e cujos altares Ezequias tirou e disse a Judá e a Jerusalém: Perante este altar vos inclinareis? 8 Ora, pois, dá, agora, reféns ao meu senhor, o rei da Assíria, e dar-te-ei dois mil cavalos, se tu puderes dar cavaleiros para eles. 9 Como, não podendo tu voltar o rosto a um só príncipe dos mínimos servos do meu senhor, confias no Egito, por causa dos carros e cavaleiros? 10 E subi eu, agora, sem o Senhor contra esta terra, para destruí-la? O Senhor mesmo me disse: Sobe contra esta terra e destrói-a.
11 Então, disse Eliaquim, e Sebna, e Joá a Rabsaqué: Pedimos-te que fales aos teus servos em siríaco, porque bem o entendemos, e não nos fales em judaico, aos ouvidos do povo que está sobre os muros. 12 Mas Rabsaqué disse: Porventura, mandou-me o meu senhor só ao teu senhor e a ti, para dizer estas palavras? E não, antes, aos homens que estão assentados sobre os muros, para que comam convosco o seu esterco e bebam a sua urina?
13 Rabsaqué, pois, se pôs em pé, e clamou em alta voz em judaico, e disse: Ouvi as palavras do grande rei, do rei da Assíria. 14 Assim diz o rei: Não vos engane Ezequias, porque não vos poderá livrar. 15 Nem tampouco Ezequias vos faça confiar no Senhor, dizendo: Infalivelmente, nos livrará o Senhor, e esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria. 16 Não deis ouvidos a Ezequias, porque assim diz o rei da Assíria: Aliai-vos comigo e saí a mim, e coma cada um da sua vide e da sua figueira e beba cada um da água da sua cisterna, 17 até que eu venha e vos leve para uma terra como a vossa, terra de trigo e de mosto, terra de pão e de vinhas. 18 Não vos engane Ezequias, dizendo: O Senhor nos livrará. Porventura, os deuses das nações livraram cada um a sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria? 19 Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Porventura, livraram eles a Samaria das minhas mãos? 20 Quais são eles, dentre todos os deuses desses países, os que livraram a sua terra das minhas mãos, para que o Senhor livrasse a Jerusalém das minhas mãos?
21 Mas eles calaram-se e não lhe responderam palavra, porque havia mandado do rei, dizendo: Não lhe respondereis. 22 Então, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o mordomo, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o chanceler, vieram a Ezequias com as vestes rasgadas e lhe fizeram saber as palavras de Rabsaqué.

Sennacherib’s message
36 Assyria’s King Sennacherib marched against all of Judah’s fortified cities and captured them in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah. 2 Assyria’s king sent his field commander from Lachish, together with a large army, to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. He stood at the water channel of the Upper Pool, which is on the road to the field where clothes are washed. 3 Hilkiah’s son Eliakim, who was the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Asaph’s son Joah the recorder went out to them.
4 Then the field commander said to them, “Say to Hezekiah: Assyria’s Great King says this: Why do you feel so confident? 5 Do you think that empty words are the same as good strategy and the strength to fight? Who are you trusting that you now rebel against me? 6 It appears that you are trusting in a staff—Egypt—that’s nothing but a broken reed! It will stab the hand of anyone who leans on it! That’s all that Pharaoh, Egypt’s king, is to anyone who trusts in him. 7 Now suppose you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God.’ Isn’t he the one whose shrines and altars Hezekiah removed, telling Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship only at this altar’?
8 “So now, make a wager with my master, Assyria’s king. I’ll give you two thousand horses if you can supply the riders! 9 How will you drive back even the least important official among my master’s servants when you are relying on Egypt for chariots and riders? 10 What’s more, do you think I’ve marched against this place to destroy it without the Lord’s support? It was the Lord who told me, ‘March against this land and destroy it!’”
11 Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, because we understand it. Don’t speak with us in Hebrew,[a] because the people on the wall will hear it.”
12 The field commander said to them, “Did my master send me to speak these words just to you and your master and not also to the men on the wall? They are the ones who will have to eat their dung and drink their urine along with you.” 13 Then the field commander stood up and shouted in Hebrew at the top of his voice: “Listen to the message of the great king, Assyria’s king. 14 The king says this: Don’t let Hezekiah lie to you. He won’t be able to rescue you. 15 Don’t let Hezekiah persuade you to trust the Lord by saying, ‘The Lord will certainly rescue us. This city won’t be handed over to Assyria’s king.’
16 “Don’t listen to Hezekiah, because this is what Assyria’s king says: Surrender to me and come out. Then each of you will eat from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own well 17 until I come to take you to a land just like your land. It will be a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Don’t let Hezekiah fool you by saying, ‘The Lord will rescue us.’ Did any of the other gods of the nations save their lands from the power of Assyria’s king? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Did they rescue Samaria from my power? 20 Which one of the gods from those countries has rescued their land from my power? Will the Lord save Jerusalem from my power?”
21 But they kept quiet and didn’t answer him with a single word, because King Hezekiah’s command was, “Don’t answer him!” 22 Hilkiah’s son Eliakim, who was the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Asaph’s son Joah the recorder came to Hezekiah with ripped clothes. They told him what the field commander had said.

36 U četrnaestoj godini vladavine kralja Ezekije, asirski je kralj Sanherib napao i zauzeo sve utvrđene judejske gradove. 2 Potom je iz Lakiša poslao svoga glavnog zapovjednika kralju Ezekiji. Zapovjednik je s velikom vojskom krenuo u Jeruzalem te se zaustavio kod vodovoda na Gornjem bazenu, na putu za Peračevo polje.
3 Pred njega su izašla tri čovjeka: Elijakim—Hilkijin sin, Šebna i Joah—Asafov sin. Elijakim je bio upravitelj palače, Šebna pisar, a Joah bilježnik.
4 Glavni im je zapovjednik rekao: »Prenesite Ezekiji ovu poruku velikog vladara, kralja Asirije:
Na čemu se temelji tvoja samouvjerenost? 5 Zar prazne riječi mogu zamijeniti vojnu vještinu i snagu? Na koga se oslanjaš kad se buniš protiv mene? 6 Zar na Egipat, taj napukli štap od trske? Ako se na njega čovjek osloni, probost će mu ruku i ranit će ga! Takav je faraon, egipatski kralj, svakome tko se osloni na njega.
7 Možda ćeš mi reći da se pouzdajete u svoga BOGA za pomoć. No ja znam da je to Bog čija je svetišta i žrtvenike Ezekija dao ukloniti, govoreći narodu Jude i Jeruzalema kako trebaju štovati samo pred jednim žrtvenikom u Jeruzalemu.
8 Želiš li se ipak boriti protiv mog gospodara, kralja Asirije, dat ću ti dvije tisuće konja—ako za njih budeš mogao pronaći jahače. 9 Pa ti se ne možeš obraniti ni od jednog od najnižih zapovjednika moga gospodara, čak i ako se oslanjaš na to da će ti Egipat dati kola i konjanike. 10 Osim toga, nisam došao napasti i uništiti ovo mjesto bez BOŽJE zapovijedi. Sâm BOG mi je rekao da krenem na ovu zemlju i uništim je.«
11 Potom su Elijakim, Šebna i Joah rekli glavnom zapovjedniku: »Molimo te, govori s nama, svojim slugama, na aramejskom jeziku jer mi ga razumijemo. Nemoj govoriti hebrejski[a] jer nas čuje narod na zidinama.«
12 No glavni im je zapovjednik odgovorio: »Moj me gospodar nije poslao da ovo kažem samo vašem gospodaru i vama nego i ovim ljudima koji sjede na zidinama. Jer, oni će jesti svoj izmet i piti svoju mokraću, baš kao i vi!«
13 Potom je glavni zapovjednik ustao i povikao na hebrejskom:
Čujte poruku velikog vladara, kralja Asirije! 14 Ovo vam poručuje kralj: »Ne dajte da vas Ezekija zavara jer on vas ne može spasiti. 15 Ne dajte Ezekiji da vas nagovori da se uzdate u BOGA. On će vam reći: ‘BOG će nas sigurno izbaviti. Ovaj grad neće pasti u ruke asirskom kralju.’
16 Ne slušajte Ezekiju! Ovako kaže asirski kralj: ‘Sklopite sa mnom mir i izađite pred mene. Tada će svaki od vas moći jesti vlastito grožđe, vlastite smokve i piti vodu iz svoga bunara. 17 Nakon nekog vremena, doći ću i odvesti vas u zemlju poput vaše. To je zemlja u kojoj ima žita, mladog vina, kruha i vinograda.’
18 Ne dopustite Ezekiji da vas zavara govoreći da će vas spasiti BOG. Je li bog bilo kojeg naroda ikad spasio svoju zemlju od asirskoga kralja? 19 Gdje su bogovi Hamata i Arpada? Gdje su bogovi Sefarvajima? Jesu li bogovi spasili Samariju od mene? 20 Koji je od bogova tih naroda sačuvao svoju zemlju od mene? Kako će onda BOG sačuvati Jeruzalem od mene?«
21 Ali narod je šutio i nije mu ništa odgovorio. Naime, kralj Ezekija je zapovjedio: »Ne odgovarajte mu.«
22 Tada su upravitelj palače Elijakim—Hilkijin sin, pisar Šebna i bilježnik Joah—Asafov sin, otišli Ezekiji. Razderali su svoju odjeću i prenijeli mu što im je rekao glavni savjetnik.

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem(A)
36 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s(B) reign, Sennacherib(C) king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.(D) 2 Then the king of Assyria sent his field commander with a large army from Lachish(E) to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. When the commander stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field,(F) 3 Eliakim(G) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator,(H) Shebna(I) the secretary,(J) and Joah(K) son of Asaph the recorder(L) went out to him.
4 The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:
“‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? 5 You say you have counsel and might for war—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel(M) against me? 6 Look, I know you are depending(N) on Egypt,(O) that splintered reed(P) of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 7 But if you say to me, “We are depending(Q) on the Lord our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed,(R) saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar”?(S)
8 “‘Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses(T)—if you can put riders on them! 9 How then can you repulse one officer of the least of my master’s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt(U) for chariots(V) and horsemen[a]?(W) 10 Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this land without the Lord? The Lord himself told(X) me to march against this country and destroy it.’”
11 Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah(Y) said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(Z) since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
12 But the commander replied, “Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?(AA)”
13 Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew,(AB) “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!(AC) 14 This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive(AD) you. He cannot deliver you! 15 Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, ‘The Lord will surely deliver(AE) us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’(AF)
16 “Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree(AG) and drink water from your own cistern,(AH) 17 until I come and take you to a land like your own(AI)—a land of grain and new wine,(AJ) a land of bread and vineyards.
18 “Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?(AK) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim?(AL) Have they rescued Samaria(AM) from my hand? 20 Who of all the gods(AN) of these countries have been able to save their lands from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”(AO)
21 But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”(AP)
22 Then Eliakim(AQ) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder(AR) went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn,(AS) and told him what the field commander had said.

36 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.
3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.
4 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5 I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10 And am I now come up without the Lord against this land to destroy it? the Lord said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, the Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
