Exaltation of the Afflicted

61 The (A)Spirit of the Lord [a]God is upon me,
Because the Lord anointed me
To (B)bring good news to the (C)humble;
He has sent me to (D)bind up the brokenhearted,
To (E)proclaim [b]release to captives
And [c]freedom to prisoners;
To (F)proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
And the (G)day of vengeance of our God;
To (H)comfort all who mourn,
To (I)grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The (J)oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit.
So they will be called [d](K)oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

Then they will (L)rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
(M)Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [e]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the (N)priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as (O)ministers of our God.
You will eat the (P)wealth of nations,
And you will boast in their [f]riches.
Instead of your (Q)shame you will have a (R)double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
(S)Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, (T)love justice,
I hate robbery [g]in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them their reward,
And make an (U)everlasting covenant with them.
Then their offspring will be known among the nations,
And their descendants in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (V)offspring whom the Lord has blessed.

10 I will (W)rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will be joyful in (X)my God;
For He has (Y)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a groom puts on a turban,
And (Z)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (AA)earth produces its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord [h]God will (AB)cause (AC)righteousness and praise
To spring up before all the nations.

Zion’s Glory and New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her (AD)righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her (AE)salvation like a torch that is burning.
The (AF)nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new (AG)name
Which the mouth of the Lord will designate.
You will also be a (AH)crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal headband in the hand of your God.
It will no longer be said to you, “[i](AI)Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “[j]Desolate”;
But you will be called, “[k]My delight is in her,”
And your land, “[l](AJ)Married”;
For the (AK)Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the [m]groom rejoices over the bride,
So your (AL)God will rejoice over you.

On your walls, Jerusalem, I have appointed (AM)watchmen;
All day and all night they will never keep silent.
You who (AN)profess the Lord, take no rest for yourselves;
And (AO)give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes (AP)Jerusalem an object of praise on the earth.
(AQ)The Lord has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm:
“I will (AR)never again give your grain as food for your enemies,
Nor will [n]foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.”
But those who (AS)harvest it will eat it and praise the Lord;
And those who gather it will drink it in the courtyards of My sanctuary.

10 Go through, (AT)go through the gates,
Clear a way [o]for the people!
(AU)Build up, build up the (AV)highway,
Remove the stones, lift up a (AW)flag over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the (AX)end of the earth:
(AY)Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your (AZ)salvation is coming;
(BA)Behold His reward is with Him, and His compensation before Him.”
12 And they will call them, “(BB)The holy people,
The (BC)redeemed of the Lord”;
And you will be called, “Sought Out, A City (BD)Not Abandoned.”

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

63 Who is this who comes from (BE)Edom,
With (BF)garments of [p]glowing colors from (BG)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[q]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, (BH)mighty to save.”
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who (BI)treads in the wine press?
(BJ)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no one with Me.
I also (BK)trod them in My anger
And (BL)trampled them in My wrath;
And (BM)their [r]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [s]stained all My clothes.
For the (BN)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
I looked, but there was (BO)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My (BP)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
I (BQ)trampled down the peoples in My anger
And made them (BR)drunk with My wrath,
And I [t]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

God’s Ancient Mercies Recalled

I will make mention of the (BS)mercies of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great (BT)goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His (BU)compassion
And according to the abundance of His mercies.
For He said, “Certainly they are (BV)My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their (BW)Savior.
In all their distress [u](BX)He was distressed,
And the (BY)angel of His presence saved them;
In His (BZ)love and in His mercy He (CA)redeemed them,
And He (CB)lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they (CC)rebelled
And grieved His (CD)Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then (CE)His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is (CF)He who brought them up out of the sea with the [v]shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who (CG)put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [w]them,
12 Who caused His (CH)glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who (CI)divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not (CJ)stumble;
14 Like the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the (CK)Lord gave [x]them rest.
So You (CL)led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.

You Are Our Father

15 (CM)Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious (CN)lofty habitation;
Where are Your (CO)zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The (CP)stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our (CQ)Father, though (CR)Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, Lord, are our Father,
Our (CS)Redeemer from ancient times is Your name.
17 Why, Lord, do You (CT)cause us to stray from Your ways
And (CU)harden our heart from fearing You?
(CV)Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have (CW)trampled it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.

Prayer for Mercy and Help

64 [y]Oh, that You would tear open the heavens and (CX)come down,
That the mountains would (CY)quake at Your presence—
[z]As fire kindles brushwood, as fire causes water to boil—
To make Your name known to Your adversaries,
That the (CZ)nations may tremble at Your presence!
When You did (DA)awesome things which we did not expect,
You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence.
For from days of old (DB)they have not heard or perceived by ear,
Nor has the eye seen a God besides You,
Who acts in behalf of one who (DC)waits for Him.
You (DD)meet him who rejoices in (DE)doing righteousness,
Who (DF)remembers You in Your ways.
Behold, (DG)You were angry, for we sinned,
We continued in [aa]our sins for a long time;
Yet shall we be saved?
For all of us have become like one who is (DH)unclean,
And all our (DI)righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us (DJ)wither like a leaf,
And our (DK)wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
There is (DL)no one who calls on Your name,
Who stirs himself to take hold of You;
For You have (DM)hidden Your face from us
And have [ab]surrendered us to the power of our wrongdoings.

But now, Lord, (DN)You are our Father;
We are the (DO)clay, and You our potter,
And all of us are the (DP)work of Your hand.
Do not be (DQ)angry beyond measure, Lord,
(DR)Nor remember wrongdoing forever.
Behold, please look, all of us are (DS)Your people.
10 Your (DT)holy cities have become a (DU)wilderness,
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful (DV)house,
Where our fathers praised You,
Has been burned by fire;
And (DW)all our precious things have become a ruin.
12 Will You (DX)restrain Yourself at these things, Lord?
Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?
