The Day Is Near

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come(A) for you to wake up from your slumber,(B) because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.(C) So let us put aside the deeds of darkness(D) and put on the armor(E) of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness,(F) not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.(G) 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,(H) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[a](I)

11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

But the righteousness that is by faith(A) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[a](B) (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[b](C) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).(D) But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[c](E) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare(F) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(G) and believe(H) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,(I) you will be saved.(J) 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(A) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](B)

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(C) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(D) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(E) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(F)

Footnotes

  1. Luke 3:6 Isaiah 40:3-5

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
