Israel Encouraged

41 “^(A)Listen to Me ^(B)in silence, you coastlands,
And let the peoples ^(C)gain new strength;
^(D)Let them come forward, then let them speak;
^(E)Let’s come together for judgment.
²^(F)Who has stirred one from the east
Whom He ^(G)calls in righteousness to His ^[a]feet?
He ^(H)turns nations over to him
And subdues kings.
He makes them like ^(I)dust with his sword,
Like the wind-driven ^(J)chaff with his bow.
³He pursues them, passing on in safety,
By a way he had not been ^[b]traversing with his feet.
⁴^(K)Who has performed and accomplished it,
Summoning the generations from the beginning?
‘^(L)I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. ^(M)I am He.’”

⁵The ^(N)coastlands have seen and are afraid;
The ^(O)ends of the earth tremble;
They have approached and have come.
⁶Each one helps his neighbor
And says to his brother, “Be strong!”
⁷So the ^(P)craftsman encourages the ^(Q)smelter,
And he who smooths metal with the hammer encourages him who beats the anvil,
Saying of the soldering, “It is good”;
And he fastens it with nails,
^(R)So that it will not totter.
⁸“But you, Israel, ^(S)My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
Descendant of ^(T)Abraham My ^(U)friend,
⁹You whom I have ^[c]^(V)taken from the ends of the earth
And called from its ^(W)remotest parts,
And said to you, ‘You are ^(X)My servant,
I have ^(Y)chosen you and have not rejected you.
¹⁰Do not ^(Z)fear, for I am with you;
Do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, ^(AA)I will also help you,
I will also uphold you with My righteous ^(AB)right hand.’
¹¹Behold, ^(AC)all those who are angered at you will be shamed and dishonored;
^(AD)Those who contend with you will be as nothing and will perish.
¹²^(AE)You will seek those who quarrel with you, but will not find them,
Those who war with you will be as nothing and non-existent.
¹³For I am the Lord your God ^(AF)who takes hold of your right hand,
Who says to you, ‘^(AG)Do not fear, I will help you.’
¹⁴Do not fear, you ^(AH)worm Jacob, you people of Israel;
I will help you,” declares the Lord, “and ^(AI)your ^[d]Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
¹⁵Behold, I turned you into a new, sharp threshing sledge with double edges;
^(AJ)You will thresh the ^(AK)mountains and pulverize them,
And make the hills like chaff.
¹⁶You will ^(AL)winnow them, and the wind will carry them away,
And the storm will scatter them;
But you will ^(AM)rejoice in the Lord,
You will boast in the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁷“The poor and needy are seeking ^(AN)water, but there is none,
And their tongues are parched with thirst.
I, the Lord, ^(AO)will answer them Myself;
As the God of Israel I ^(AP)will not abandon them.
¹⁸I will open ^(AQ)rivers on the bare heights,
And springs in the midst of the valleys;
I will make ^(AR)the wilderness a pool of water,
And the dry land fountains of water.
¹⁹I will put the cedar in the wilderness,
The acacia, the ^(AS)myrtle, and the olive tree;
I will place the ^(AT)juniper in the desert,
Together with the elm tree and the cypress,
²⁰So that ^(AU)they may see and recognize,
And consider and gain insight as well,
That the ^(AV)hand of the Lord has done this,
And the Holy One of Israel has created it.

²¹“^[e]Present your case,” the Lord says.
“Bring forward your evidence,”
The ^(AW)King of Jacob says.
²²^(AX)Let them bring them forward and declare to us what is going to take place;
As for the ^(AY)former events, declare what they were,
So that we may consider them and know their outcome.
Or announce to us what is coming;
²³^(AZ)Declare the things that are going to come afterward,
So that we may know that you are gods;
Indeed, ^(BA)do good or evil, that we may be afraid and fear together.
²⁴Behold, ^(BB)you are less than nothing,
And ^(BC)your work is less than nothing!
He who chooses you is an ^(BD)abomination.

²⁵“I have put ^(BE)one from the north into motion, and he has come;
From the rising of the sun he will call on My name;
And he will come upon rulers as upon ^[f]^(BF)mortar,
As the potter treads on clay.”
²⁶Who has ^(BG)declared this from the beginning, that we might know?
Or from former times, that we may say, “He is right!”?
There was ^(BH)no one at all who declared,
There was no one at all who proclaimed,
There was no one at all who heard your words.
²⁷“^(BI)Previously I said to Zion, ‘Behold, here they are.’
And to Jerusalem, ‘I will give a ^(BJ)messenger of good news.’
²⁸But ^(BK)when I look, there is no one,
And there is no ^(BL)counselor ^[g]among them
Who, if I ask, can ^(BM)give an answer.
²⁹Behold, all of them are ^[h]false;
Their ^(BN)works are ^(BO)nothing,
Their cast metal images are ^(BP)wind and emptiness.

God’s Promise concerning His Servant

42 “^(A)Behold, My ^(B)Servant, whom I ^[a]uphold;
My ^(C)chosen one in whom My ^(D)soul delights.
I have put My ^(E)Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth ^(F)justice to the ^[b]nations.
²He will not cry out nor raise His voice,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
³A bent reed He will not break off
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;
He will faithfully bring forth ^(G)justice.
⁴He will not be ^(H)disheartened or crushed
Until He has established justice on the earth;
And the ^(I)coastlands will wait expectantly for His ^[c]law.”

⁵This is what God the Lord says,

Who ^(J)created the heavens and ^(K)stretched them out,
Who spread out the ^(L)earth and its ^[d]offspring,
Who ^(M)gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it:
⁶“I am the Lord, I have ^(N)called You in righteousness,
I will also ^(O)hold You by the hand and ^(P)watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a ^(Q)covenant to the people,
As a ^(R)light to the nations,
⁷To ^(S)open blind eyes,
To ^(T)bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
⁸^(U)I am the Lord, that is ^(V)My name;
I will not give My ^(W)glory to another,
Nor My praise to idols.
⁹Behold, the ^(X)former things have come to pass,
Now I declare ^(Y)new things;
Before they sprout I proclaim them to you.”

¹⁰Sing to the Lord a ^(Z)new song,
Sing His praise from the ^(AA)end of the earth!
^(AB)You who go down to the sea, and ^(AC)all that is in it;
You ^(AD)islands, and those who live on them.
¹¹Let the ^(AE)wilderness and its cities raise their voices,
The settlements which ^(AF)Kedar inhabits.
Let the inhabitants of ^(AG)Sela sing aloud,
Let them shout for joy from the tops of the ^(AH)mountains.
¹²Let them ^(AI)give glory to the Lord
And declare His praise in the ^(AJ)coastlands.
¹³^(AK)The Lord will go out like a warrior,
He will stir His ^(AL)zeal like a man of war.
He will shout, indeed, He will raise a war cry.
He will ^(AM)prevail against His enemies.

The Blindness of the People

¹⁴“^(AN)I have kept silent for a long time,
I have kept still and restrained Myself.
Now like a woman in labor I will groan,
I will both gasp and pant.
¹⁵I will ^(AO)lay waste the mountains and hills
And wither all their vegetation;
I will ^(AP)turn the rivers into coastlands
And dry up the ponds.
¹⁶I will ^(AQ)lead those who are blind by a way they have not known,
In paths they have not known I will guide them.
I will ^(AR)turn darkness into light before them
And ^(AS)uneven land into plains.
These are the things I will do,
And I will ^(AT)not leave them undone.”
¹⁷They will be turned back and be ^(AU)utterly put to shame,
Who trust in ^[e]idols,
Who say to cast metal images,
“You are our gods.”

¹⁸^(AV)Hear, you who are deaf!
And look, you who are blind, so that you may see.
¹⁹Who is blind but My ^(AW)servant,
Or so deaf as My ^(AX)messenger whom I send?
Who is so blind as one who is ^[f]^(AY)at peace with Me,
Or so blind as the servant of the Lord?
²⁰^(AZ)You have seen many things, but you do not retain them;
Your ears are open, but no one hears.
²¹The Lord was pleased for His righteousness’ sake
To make the Law ^(BA)great and glorious.
²²But this is a people plundered and pillaged;
All of them are ^(BB)trapped in ^[g]caves,
Or are ^(BC)hidden away in prisons;
They have become plunder, with no one to save them,
And spoils with no one to say, “Give them back!”

²³Who among you will listen to this?
Who will pay attention and listen in the time to come?
²⁴Who gave Jacob up for spoils, and Israel to plunderers?
Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned,
And in whose ways they ^(BD)were not willing to walk,
And whose Law they did not ^(BE)obey?
²⁵So He poured out on him the heat of His anger
And the ^(BF)fierceness of battle;
And it set him aflame all around,
Yet he did not recognize it;
And it burned him, but he ^[h]^(BG)paid no attention.

Israel Redeemed

43 But now, this is what the Lord says, He who is your ^(A)Creator, Jacob,
And He who ^(B)formed you, Israel:
“Do not ^(C)fear, for I have ^(D)redeemed you;
I have ^(E)called you by name; you are ^(F)Mine!
²When you ^(G)pass through the waters, ^(H)I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.
When you ^(I)walk through the fire, you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you.
³For ^(J)I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your ^(K)Savior;
I have given Egypt as your ransom,
^[a]^(L)Cush and Seba in exchange for you.
⁴Since you are ^(M)precious in My sight,
Since you are ^(N)honored and I ^(O)love you,
I will give other people in your place and other nations in exchange for your life.
⁵Do not fear, for ^(P)I am with you;
I will bring ^(Q)your offspring from the east,
And ^(R)gather you from the west.
⁶I will say to the ^(S)north, ‘Give them up!’
And to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring My ^(T)sons from afar
And My daughters from the ^(U)ends of the earth,
⁷Everyone who is ^(V)called by My name,
And whom I have ^(W)created for My ^(X)glory,
^(Y)Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”

Israel Is God’s Witness

⁸Bring out the people who are ^(Z)blind, even though they have eyes,
And those who are deaf, even though they have ears.
⁹All the nations have ^(AA)gathered together
So that the peoples may be assembled.
Who among them can ^(AB)declare this
And proclaim to us the former things?
Let them present ^(AC)their witnesses so ^(AD)that they may be justified,
Or let them hear and say, “It is true.”
¹⁰“You are ^(AE)My witnesses,” declares the Lord,
“And ^(AF)My servant whom I have chosen,
So that you may know and believe Me
And understand that ^(AG)I am He.
^(AH)Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me.
¹¹I, only I, am the Lord,
And there is no ^(AI)savior ^(AJ)besides Me.
¹²It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed,
And there was no ^(AK)strange god among you;
So you are My witnesses,” declares the Lord,
“And I am God.
¹³Even ^[b]^(AL)from eternity ^(AM)I am He,
And there is ^(AN)no one who can rescue from My hand;
^(AO)I act, and who can reverse it?”

Babylon to Be Destroyed

¹⁴This is what the Lord your ^(AP)Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says:

“For your sake I have sent to Babylon,
And will bring them all down as fugitives,
^[c]Even the ^(AQ)Chaldeans, into the ^(AR)ships ^[d]over which they rejoice.
¹⁵I am the Lord, your Holy One,
^(AS)The Creator of Israel, your ^(AT)King.”

¹⁶This is what the Lord says,

He who ^(AU)makes a way through the sea
And a path through the mighty waters,
¹⁷Who brings out the ^(AV)chariot and the horse,
The army and the mighty man
(They will lie down together and not rise again;
They have been ^(AW)extinguished, and have gone out like a wick):
¹⁸“^(AX)Do not call to mind the former things,
Or consider things of the past.
¹⁹Behold, I am going to do something ^(AY)new,
Now it will spring up;
Will you not be aware of it?
I will even ^(AZ)make a roadway in the wilderness,
Rivers in the desert.
²⁰The animals of the field will glorify Me,
The ^(BA)jackals and the ostriches,
Because I have ^(BB)given waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My chosen people.
²¹The people whom ^(BC)I formed for Myself
^(BD)Will declare My praise.

The Shortcomings of Israel

²²“Yet you have not called on Me, Jacob;
But you have become ^(BE)weary of Me, Israel.
²³You have ^(BF)not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings,
Nor have you ^(BG)honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not ^(BH)burdened you with ^[e]offerings,
Nor wearied you with ^(BI)incense.
²⁴You have not bought Me ^[f]^(BJ)sweet cane with money,
Nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;
Rather, you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have ^(BK)wearied Me with your wrongdoings.

²⁵“I, I alone, am the one who ^(BL)wipes out your wrongdoings ^(BM)for My own sake,
And I will ^(BN)not remember your sins.
²⁶^[g]Meet Me in court, ^(BO)let’s argue our case together;
State your cause, ^(BP)so that you may be proved right.
²⁷Your ^(BQ)first ^[h]forefather sinned,
And your ^[i]^(BR)spokesmen have rebelled against Me.
²⁸So I will profane the ^[j]officials of the sanctuary,
And I will turn Jacob over to ^(BS)destruction and Israel to ^(BT)abuse.

The Blessings of Israel

44 “But now listen, Jacob, My ^(A)servant,
And Israel, whom I have chosen:
²This is what the Lord says, He who made you
And ^(B)formed you from the womb, who ^(C)will help you:
‘^(D)Do not fear, Jacob My servant,
And ^[a]^(E)Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
³For ^(F)I will pour water on ^[b]the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will ^(G)pour out My Spirit on your ^(H)offspring,
And My blessing on your descendants;
⁴And they will spring up ^[c]among the grass
Like ^(I)poplars by streams of water.’
⁵This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
And that one ^[d]will call on the name of Jacob;
And another will ^(J)write ^[e]on his hand, ‘Belonging to the Lord,’
And will give himself Israel’s name with honor.

⁶“This is what the Lord says, He who is the ^(K)King of Israel and his ^(L)Redeemer, the Lord of armies:

‘I am the ^(M)first and I am the last,
And there is no God ^(N)besides Me.
⁷Who is like Me? ^(O)Let him proclaim and declare it;
And, let him confront Me
^[f]Beginning with My establishing of the ancient ^[g]nation.
Then let them declare to them the things that are coming
And the events that are going to take place.
⁸Do not tremble and do not be afraid;
^(P)Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it?
And ^(Q)you are My witnesses.
Is there any God ^(R)besides Me,
Or is there any other ^(S)Rock?
I know of none.’”

The Foolishness of Idolatry

⁹Those who fashion an idol are all futile, and their treasured things are of no benefit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be ^(T)put to shame. ¹⁰Who has fashioned a god or cast an idol to ^(U)no benefit? ¹¹Behold, all his companions will be ^(V)put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them be put to shame together.

¹²The ^(W)craftsman of iron shapes a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, ^[h]fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and ^[i]his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary. ¹³^(X)The craftsman of wood extends a measuring line; he outlines it with a marker. He works it with carving knives and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of ^(Y)mankind, so that it may sit in a ^(Z)house. ¹⁴He will cut cedars for himself, and he takes a holm-oak or another oak and lets it grow strong for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a laurel tree, and the rain makes it grow. ¹⁵Then it becomes something for a person to burn, so he takes one of them and gets warm; he also makes a fire and bakes bread. He also ^(AA)makes a god and worships it; he makes it a carved image and ^(AB)bows down before it. ¹⁶Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat, he roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire.” ¹⁷Yet the rest of it he ^(AC)makes into a god, his carved image. He bows down before it and worships; he also ^(AD)prays to it and says, “Save me, for you are my god.”

¹⁸They do not ^(AE)know, nor do they understand, for He has ^(AF)smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see, and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend. ¹⁹No one ^[j]remembers, nor is there ^(AG)knowledge or understanding to say, “I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then ^[k]I make the rest of it into an ^(AH)abomination, ^[l]I bow down before a block of wood!” ²⁰He ^[m]^(AI)feeds on ashes; a ^(AJ)deceived heart has misled him. And he cannot save ^[n]himself, nor say, “^(AK)Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

God Forgives and Redeems

²¹“^(AL)Remember these things, Jacob,
And Israel, for you are ^(AM)My servant;
I have formed you, you are My servant,
Israel, you will ^(AN)not be forgotten by Me.
²²I have ^(AO)wiped out your wrongdoings like a thick cloud
And your sins like a ^[o]heavy mist.
^(AP)Return to Me, for I have ^(AQ)redeemed you.”
²³^(AR)Shout for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done it!
Shout joyfully, you lower parts of the earth;
^(AS)Break into a shout of jubilation, you mountains,
Forest, and every tree in it;
For ^(AT)the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And in Israel He ^(AU)shows His glory.

²⁴This is what the Lord says, He who is your ^(AV)Redeemer, and the one who ^(AW)formed you from the womb:

“I, the Lord, am the maker of all things,
^(AX)Stretching out the heavens by Myself
And spreading out the earth ^[p]alone,
²⁵^(AY)Causing the ^[q]omens of diviners to fail,
^[r]Making fools of fortune-tellers;
^(AZ)Causing wise men to turn back
And ^[s]making their knowledge ridiculous,
²⁶^(BA)Confirming the word of His servant
And ^[t]carrying out the purpose of His messengers.
It is I who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited!’
And of the ^(BB)cities of Judah, ‘^(BC)They shall be built.’
And I will raise her ruins again.
²⁷I am the One who says to the depth of the sea, ‘Dry up!’
And I will make your rivers ^(BD)dry up.
²⁸It is I who says of ^(BE)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd,
And he will carry out all My desire.’
And ^[u]he says of Jerusalem, ‘^(BF)She will be built,’
And of the temple, ‘^[v]Your foundation will be laid.’”

The Use of Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning ^(A)spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, ^(B)I do not want you to be unaware. ²^(C)You know that when you were ^[a]pagans, you were ^(D)led ^[b]astray to the ^(E)mute idols, however you were led. ³Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking ^[c]^(F)by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is ^[d]^(G)accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is ^(H)Lord,” except ^[e]^(I)by the Holy Spirit.

⁴Now there are ^(J)varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. ⁶There are varieties of effects, but the same ^(K)God who works all things in all persons. ⁷But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit ^(L)for the common good. ⁸For to one is given the word of ^(M)wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of ^(N)knowledge according to the same Spirit; ⁹to another ^(O)faith ^[f]by the same Spirit, and to another ^(P)gifts of ^[g]healing ^[h]by the one Spirit, ¹⁰and to another the ^[i]effecting of ^[j]^(Q)miracles, and to another ^(R)prophecy, and to another the ^[k]^(S)distinguishing of spirits, to another various ^(T)kinds of tongues, and to another the ^(U)interpretation of tongues. ¹¹But one and the same Spirit works all these things, ^(V)distributing to each one individually just as He ^[l]wills.

¹²For just ^(W)as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though they are many, are one body, ^(X)so also is Christ. ¹³For ^[m]^(Y)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether ^(Z)Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to ^(AA)drink of one Spirit.

¹⁴For ^(AB)the body is not one part, but many. ¹⁵If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason ^[n]any less a part of the body. ¹⁶And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason ^[o]any less a part of the body. ¹⁷If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? ¹⁸But now God has ^(AC)arranged the parts, each one of them in the body, ^(AD)just as He desired. ¹⁹If they were all one part, where would the body be? ²⁰But now ^(AE)there are many parts, but one body. ²¹And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again, the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” ²²On the contrary, ^[p]it is much truer that the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; ²³and those parts of the body which we ^[q]consider less honorable, ^[r]on these we bestow greater honor, and our less presentable parts become much more presentable, ²⁴whereas our more presentable parts have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked, ²⁵so that there may be no ^[s]division in the body, but that the parts may have the same care for one another. ²⁶And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is ^[t]honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

²⁷Now you are ^(AF)Christ’s body, and ^(AG)individually parts of it. ²⁸And God has ^[u]^(AH)appointed in ^(AI)the church, first ^(AJ)apostles, second ^(AK)prophets, third ^(AL)teachers, then ^[v]^(AM)miracles, then ^(AN)gifts of healings, helps, ^(AO)administrations, and various ^(AP)kinds of tongues. ²⁹All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of ^[w]miracles, are they? ³⁰All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not ^(AQ)interpret, do they? ³¹But ^(AR)earnestly desire the greater gifts.
