Open shame, O Lord, falls on us, our kings, our princes, and our ancestors because we have sinned against you. And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—

“My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord

for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves
    and chastises every child whom he accepts.”(B)

Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children, for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?(C) If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children.(D)

And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not lose heart(A) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(B)
    and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](C)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(D) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(E)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
