さばきと救い
65 主はこう告げます。
「わたしのことを聞きもしなかった民が、
今ではわたしを捜し出す。
かつてわたしを捜しもしなかった民が、
わたしを見いだす。
2 ところが、イスラエルはどうだろう。
わたしが一日中手を広げて招いているのに、
今も逆らっている。
自分の思いどおりに悪の道を歩き続けている。
3 多くの園で偶像を拝み、家の屋上で香をたき、
いつもわたしを怒らせている。
4 夜は夜で、墓地や洞窟へ出かけて悪霊を拝み、
豚や、その他の禁じられているものを食べる。
5 それでいて、人には平然と、
『そばに来るな。汚らわしい。
おれはおまえよりきよいのだ』と言う。
彼らを見ると、わたしは息苦しくなる。
昼も夜も、わたしを怒らせるからだ。
6 さあ、これが、わたしの書いた声明文だ。
『わたしは黙っていない。きっと報復する。
そうだ、間違いなく報復する。』
7 彼らの罪だけではない。
先祖の罪にも報復する。
先祖たちも、山々の上で香をたき、
丘の上でわたしを侮辱したからだ。
今こそ、いやと言うほど悪に報いよう。
8 だが、全部を滅ぼすわけではない。
悪いぶどうの房に
良いぶどうも混ざっていることだから、
イスラエル人全部を滅ぼしはしない。
中には、心のきよい、わたしのしもべもいるのだ。
9 その残りの者を取っておき、イスラエルの地を与える。
わたしの選ぶ者がその地を受け継ぎ、
そこでわたしに仕えるようになる。
10 わたしを尋ね求めた者のために、
シャロンの平野は再び羊の群れで埋まり、
アコルの谷は家畜の群れを飼う所となる。
11 しかし、それ以外の者たちには容赦しない。
彼らはわたしと神殿とを捨て、
『幸運』と『運命』の神々を拝んできた。
12 それゆえ、剣に渡す『運命』に定めよう。
また、彼らの『幸運』は暗いものとなろう。
わたしが呼んだ時にこたえず、
わたしが語った時に聞こうとしなかったからだ。
そればかりか、わたしの目の前でわざと罪を犯し、
よりによってわたしの憎むことをしてきた。」
13 それで、神である主は告げます。
「おまえたちは飢えるが、
わたしのしもべたちは十分に食べる。
おまえたちはのどが渇くが、彼らは存分に飲む。
おまえたちは悲しみに沈み、恥を見るが、彼らは喜ぶ。
14 おまえたちは、悲しみと苦しみと絶望の中で
泣き叫ぶが、彼らは喜びのあまり歌いだす。
15 おまえたちの名は、わたしの民の間で、
のろいの代名詞となる。」
それは、主があなたがたを殺し、
真の主のしもべをほかの名で呼ぶからです。
16 「しかし、祝福を祈り求め、誓う者がみな、
まことの神の御名を使うようになる日が来る。
わたしが怒りを静め、
おまえたちのした悪事を忘れるからだ。
新しい天と地
17 わたしは新しい天と地とを造る。
それは目をみはるほどすばらしいので、
もうだれも、古い天と地とを思い出さなくなる。
18 わたしの造るものをいつまでも喜びなさい。
わたしはエルサレムを、幸福の都として建て直す。
そこに住む者はいつも喜びにあふれる。
19 エルサレムとわたしの民は、わたしの喜びだ。
そこにはもう、泣き声や叫び声は聞かれない。
20 生まれてすぐに死ぬ赤ん坊はいなくなる。
百歳まで長生きしても、まだ老人とは呼ばれない。
その若さで死ぬのは罪人だけだ。
21-22 その時には、
家を建てればいつまでも住むことができる。
昔のように、外国の軍隊が侵入し、
家を壊されることはない。
わたしの民はぶどう園を作り、
取れた実を自分で食べる。
敵が横取りすることはない。
だれもが木の寿命ほども長生きし、
丹精して作った穀物を、
長い間楽しみながら食べる。
23 せっかく刈り入れた物が敵の食糧になったり、
生まれた子どもが戦場で死んだりすることはない。
彼らは主に祝福され、その子らも祝福されるからだ。
24 彼らが呼ぶ前から、わたしは答える。
彼らが困って相談を持ちかけるとき、
わたしは先回りして、彼らの祈りに答える。
25 狼と子羊はいっしょに草を食べ、
ライオンは牛のようにわらを食べ、
蛇はちりを食べて、人にはかみつかない。
その時、わたしの聖なる山で、
傷つくものは一人もなく、壊れるものは一つもない。」

Judgment and Salvation
65 “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
I was found by those who did not seek me.(A)
To a nation(B) that did not call on my name,(C)
I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
2 All day long I have held out my hands
to an obstinate people,(D)
who walk in ways not good,
pursuing their own imaginations(E)—
3 a people who continually provoke me
to my very face,(F)
offering sacrifices in gardens(G)
and burning incense(H) on altars of brick;
4 who sit among the graves(I)
and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,(J)
and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;
5 who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,
for I am too sacred(K) for you!’
Such people are smoke(L) in my nostrils,
a fire that keeps burning all day.
6 “See, it stands written before me:
I will not keep silent(M) but will pay back(N) in full;
I will pay it back into their laps(O)—
7 both your sins(P) and the sins of your ancestors,”(Q)
says the Lord.
“Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
and defied me on the hills,(R)
I will measure into their laps
the full payment(S) for their former deeds.”
8 This is what the Lord says:
“As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes(T)
and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it,
there is still a blessing in it,’
so will I do in behalf of my servants;(U)
I will not destroy them all.
9 I will bring forth descendants(V) from Jacob,
and from Judah those who will possess(W) my mountains;
my chosen(X) people will inherit them,
and there will my servants live.(Y)
10 Sharon(Z) will become a pasture for flocks,(AA)
and the Valley of Achor(AB) a resting place for herds,
for my people who seek(AC) me.
11 “But as for you who forsake(AD) the Lord
and forget my holy mountain,(AE)
who spread a table for Fortune
and fill bowls of mixed wine(AF) for Destiny,
12 I will destine you for the sword,(AG)
and all of you will fall in the slaughter;(AH)
for I called but you did not answer,(AI)
I spoke but you did not listen.(AJ)
You did evil in my sight
and chose what displeases me.”(AK)
13 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“My servants will eat,(AL)
but you will go hungry;(AM)
my servants will drink,(AN)
but you will go thirsty;(AO)
my servants will rejoice,(AP)
but you will be put to shame.(AQ)
14 My servants will sing(AR)
out of the joy of their hearts,
but you will cry out(AS)
from anguish of heart
and wail in brokenness of spirit.
15 You will leave your name
for my chosen ones to use in their curses;(AT)
the Sovereign Lord will put you to death,
but to his servants he will give another name.(AU)
16 Whoever invokes a blessing(AV) in the land
will do so by the one true God;(AW)
whoever takes an oath in the land
will swear(AX) by the one true God.
For the past troubles(AY) will be forgotten
and hidden from my eyes.
New Heavens and a New Earth
17 “See, I will create
new heavens and a new earth.(AZ)
The former things will not be remembered,(BA)
nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice(BB) forever
in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem(BC) to be a delight
and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice(BD) over Jerusalem
and take delight(BE) in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying(BF)
will be heard in it no more.
20 “Never again will there be in it
an infant(BG) who lives but a few days,
or an old man who does not live out his years;(BH)
the one who dies at a hundred
will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach[a] a hundred
will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses(BI) and dwell in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.(BJ)
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,(BK)
or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree,(BL)
so will be the days(BM) of my people;
my chosen(BN) ones will long enjoy
the work of their hands.
23 They will not labor in vain,(BO)
nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;(BP)
for they will be a people blessed(BQ) by the Lord,
they and their descendants(BR) with them.
24 Before they call(BS) I will answer;(BT)
while they are still speaking(BU) I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb(BV) will feed together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox,(BW)
and dust will be the serpent’s(BX) food.
They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,”(BY)
says the Lord.

66 「天はわたしの王座、地はわたしの足台だ。
あなたがたにこれ以上の神殿を
建てることができようか。
2 わたしはこの手で天と地を造った。
全部がわたしのものだ。
それでもわたしは、
謙遜になって深く罪を悔い、
わたしのことばにおののく者に目をかける。
3 しかし、自分勝手な道を選び、
罪にふける者はのろわれる。
彼らのささげ物を、わたしは絶対に受け入れない。
たとえ牛を祭壇にささげても、見向きもしない。
子羊や穀物をささげても、
犬や豚の血を供えたときのように、顔をしかめる。
わたしに香をたいているつもりでも、
偶像を拝んでいるのだとみなす。
4 わたしは彼らに、彼らが恐れているものを送る。
わたしが呼んだのに答えようとせず、
話しかけたのに聞こうともしなかったからだ。
それどころか、わたしの見ている前で悪いことをし、
わたしが憎むことを、
そうと知りながら行った。
5 神を恐れる者は、神のことばを聞いておののけ。
あなたがたの同胞は、わたしに忠実だというだけで、
あなたがたを憎み、退ける。
『神に栄光があるように。主を信じて、
せいぜい幸せになるがいい』と彼らはあざける。
だが、そう言う彼らが恥を見るようになる。」
6 町が騒ぎ立っています。
いったいどうしたというのでしょう。
神殿から聞こえてくる、
あのすさまじい物音は何でしょう。
あれは、主が敵に報復している音です。
7-8 こんなに不思議なことを見聞きした者が
いるでしょうか。
まだ産みの苦しみの前に、一日のうちに、
突然、イスラエルの国が産み落とされるのです。
陣痛が始まると同時に、
赤ん坊が生まれ、国が出現するのです。
9 「わたしは胎を開かせておきながら、
産ませないことがあろうか」
と、あなたの神である主は言います。
そんなことは、天地がひっくり返っても、
あるはずがありません。
10 エルサレムを愛し、そのために嘆いてきた者よ、
エルサレムといっしょに喜び、楽しめ。
11 エルサレムをこの上もない喜びとせよ。
赤ん坊が母親の豊かな乳房を吸うように、
エルサレムの栄光を堪能するまで飲め。
12 主は告げます。
「繁栄が川のようにエルサレムにみなぎりあふれる。
わたしがそのようにするからだ。
外国の富はこの都に流れ込む。
子どもたちはエルサレムの乳房を吸い、
わきに抱かれ、ひざの上であやされる。
13 わたしはその都で、幼児が母親に慰められるように、
あなたがたを慰める。
14 あなたがたはエルサレムを見て心を躍らせる。
あなたがたのからだは力が満ちる。
すべての人が、
神の民に加えられた主の恵み深い御手と、
敵に向けられた主の憤りとを見る。」
15 見よ。神は怒りをぶちまけ、激しく責めたてるために、
火に包まれ、すべてのものを破壊する
速い戦車に乗って来ます。
16 火と剣で、世界をさばくのです。
主に殺される者が、いかに多いことでしょう。
17 主は告げます。
「庭の木のうしろに隠してある偶像をこっそり拝み、
そこで豚の肉やねずみ、その他の禁じられている物を
おいしそうに食べる者はみな、悲惨な最期を迎える。
18 わたしには、彼らが何をしようとしているか、すべてわかっている。何を考えているかも知っている。そこで、すべての国の人々をエルサレムの前に集め、わたしの栄光を見せる。 19 彼らの目の前で驚くような奇跡をして見せ、逃れた者を宣教師として諸国に送る。行く先は、タルシシュ、プル、ルデ、メシェク、ロシュ、トバル、ヤワン（ギリシヤ）、それに、わたしの評判を耳にしたこともなく、わたしの栄光を見たこともない、海の向こうの国々だ。こうして、わたしの栄光を外国人に告げ知らせる。 20 彼らは、すべての国々から、あなたがたの同胞を神への贈り物として、馬、車、かご、らば、らくだに乗せ、わたしの聖なる山エルサレムへ大切に運んで来る。ちょうど刈り入れの時期に、主のものとしてきよめた器に供え物を載せ、続々と神殿へ運び込むのと同じように。 21 こうして帰って来た者の中から、わたしは祭司とレビ人を選び出す。」

66 This is what the Lord says:
“Heaven is my throne,(A)
and the earth is my footstool.(B)
Where is the house(C) you will build for me?
Where will my resting place be?
2 Has not my hand made all these things,(D)
and so they came into being?”
declares the Lord.
“These are the ones I look on with favor:
those who are humble and contrite in spirit,(E)
and who tremble at my word.(F)
3 But whoever sacrifices a bull(G)
is like one who kills a person,
and whoever offers a lamb
is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever makes a grain offering
is like one who presents pig’s(H) blood,
and whoever burns memorial incense(I)
is like one who worships an idol.
They have chosen their own ways,(J)
and they delight in their abominations;(K)
4 so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
and will bring on them what they dread.(L)
For when I called, no one answered,(M)
when I spoke, no one listened.
They did evil(N) in my sight
and chose what displeases me.”(O)
5 Hear the word of the Lord,
you who tremble at his word:(P)
“Your own people who hate(Q) you,
and exclude you because of my name, have said,
‘Let the Lord be glorified,
that we may see your joy!’
Yet they will be put to shame.(R)
6 Hear that uproar from the city,
hear that noise from the temple!
It is the sound(S) of the Lord
repaying(T) his enemies all they deserve.
7 “Before she goes into labor,(U)
she gives birth;
before the pains come upon her,
she delivers a son.(V)
8 Who has ever heard of such things?
Who has ever seen(W) things like this?
Can a country be born in a day(X)
or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
than she gives birth to her children.(Y)
9 Do I bring to the moment of birth(Z)
and not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Do I close up the womb
when I bring to delivery?” says your God.
10 “Rejoice(AA) with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
all you who love(AB) her;
rejoice greatly with her,
all you who mourn(AC) over her.
11 For you will nurse(AD) and be satisfied
at her comforting breasts;(AE)
you will drink deeply
and delight in her overflowing abundance.”(AF)
12 For this is what the Lord says:
“I will extend peace(AG) to her like a river,(AH)
and the wealth(AI) of nations like a flooding stream;
you will nurse and be carried(AJ) on her arm
and dandled on her knees.
13 As a mother comforts her child,(AK)
so will I comfort(AL) you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”
14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice(AM)
and you will flourish(AN) like grass;
the hand(AO) of the Lord will be made known to his servants,(AP)
but his fury(AQ) will be shown to his foes.
15 See, the Lord is coming with fire,(AR)
and his chariots(AS) are like a whirlwind;(AT)
he will bring down his anger with fury,
and his rebuke(AU) with flames of fire.
16 For with fire(AV) and with his sword(AW)
the Lord will execute judgment(AX) on all people,
and many will be those slain(AY) by the Lord.
17 “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,(AZ) following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,(BA) rats(BB) and other unclean things—they will meet their end(BC) together with the one they follow,” declares the Lord.
18 “And I, because of what they have planned and done,(BD) am about to come[a] and gather the people of all nations(BE) and languages, and they will come and see my glory.(BF)
19 “I will set a sign(BG) among them, and I will send some of those who survive(BH) to the nations—to Tarshish,(BI) to the Libyans[b] and Lydians(BJ) (famous as archers), to Tubal(BK) and Greece,(BL) and to the distant islands(BM) that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.(BN) They will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 And they will bring(BO) all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain(BP) in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,”(BQ) says the Lord. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the Lord in ceremonially clean vessels.(BR) 21 And I will select some of them also to be priests(BS) and Levites,” says the Lord.
22 “As the new heavens and the new earth(BT) that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure.(BU) 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath(BV) to another, all mankind will come and bow down(BW) before me,” says the Lord. 24 “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies(BX) of those who rebelled(BY) against me; the worms(BZ) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,(CA) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

62 私は黙って、神からの救いを待ちます。
救うことができるのは神だけですから。
2 神こそ私の岩、私を救うお方、
そして私のとりでです。
ですから私は、困難にぶつかるときでも、
おじけづくことはありません。
3-4 ところが、いったいどうしたことでしょう。
私の王座が揺らぐと、
人々はいっせいに非難をあびせかけてくるのです。
王位から追い落とそうと、策略を練り、
必死になって根も葉もないうわさを流します。
面と向かっては、いかにもにこやかにふるまうのに、
心の中ではのろっているのです。
5 しかし、私はじっと黙って、神の救いを待ちます。
救うことができるのは神だけだからです。
6 確かに、神だけが私の岩、私を救うお方、
そして私のとりでなのです。
ですから、困難に出会っても、
顔をこわばらせなくてよいのです。
7 私が守られるのも、名声を獲得するのも、
神のお心ひとつです。
神は私の隠れ家、敵の手の届かない岩です。
8 同胞よ。いつでも神への信頼を失わず、
心にある願いを洗いざらい申し上げなさい。
神はきっと助けてくださいます。
9 身分の高い者も低い者も、

金持ちだからといって、尊大になってはいけません。

1 Truly my soul finds rest(A) in God;(B)
my salvation comes from him.
2 Truly he is my rock(C) and my salvation;(D)

3 How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down—
this leaning wall,(G) this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me
from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,

5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God;(I)
my hope comes from him.

3 1-2 とっぷり日も暮れたある夜のこと、パリサイ人で、ニコデモという名のユダヤ人の指導者がイエスに会いに来ました。「先生。だれも、あなたが神から遣わされた教師であることを知っております。あなたのなさる奇跡を見ればわかることです。」 3 「そうですか。でもよく言っておきますが、あなたはもう一度生まれ直さなければ、絶対に神の国に入れません。」 4 ニコデモは、思わず言いました。「ええっ、もう一度生まれるのですか。いったい、どういうことですか。年をとった人間が母親の胎内に戻って、もう一度生まれることなどできるわけがありません。」 5 「よく言っておきますが、だれでも水と御霊によって生まれなければ、神の国には入れません。 6 人間からは人間のいのちが生まれるだけです。けれども御霊は、天からの、全く新しいいのちを下さるのです。 7 もう一度生まれなければならないといって、驚くことはありません。 8 風は音が聞こえるだけで、どこから吹いて来て、どこへ行くのかわかりません。御霊も同じことです。次はだれにこの天からのいのちが与えられるか、わからないのです。」 9 「それはいったい、どういうことですか？」 10 「あなたはみなに尊敬されているユダヤ人の教師ではありませんか。このようなこともわからないのですか。 11 わたしは知っていること、見たことだけを話しているのです。それなのに、あなたがたは信じてくれません。 12 わたしが話しているのは、人間の世界で現に起こっていることなのです。それも信じられないくらいなら、天で起こることなど話したところで、とても信じられないでしょう。 13 メシヤのわたしだけが、この地上に下って来て、また天に帰るのです。 14 モーセが荒野で、青銅で作った蛇をさおの先に掲げたように（民数21・9）、わたしも木の上に上げられなければなりません。 15 わたしを信じる人がみな、永遠のいのちを持つためです。」
16 実に神は、ひとり子をさえ惜しまず与えるほどに、この世界を愛してくださいました。それは、神の御子を信じる者が、だれ一人滅びず、永遠のいのちを得るためです。 17 神がご自分の御子を世にお遣わしになったのは、世をさばくためではなく、世を救うためです。 18 この神の子を信じる者は、永遠の滅びを免れます。しかし信じない者は、神のひとり子を信じなかったので、すでにさばかれているのです。 19 そのさばきに会ったのは、天からの光が世に来ているのに、行いが悪く、光よりも闇を愛したからです。 20 彼らは天からの光をきらい、罪が暴露されるのを恐れて、光のほうに来ようとしません。 21 しかし正しいことを行っている人は、喜んで光のほうに来ます。神の望まれることを行っていることが、はっきりわかるためです。
22 その後、イエスと弟子たちはエルサレムを去り、しばらくユダヤに滞在し、バプテスマ（洗礼）を授けていました。
バプテスマのヨハネとイエスの役割
23-24 そのころまだ、バプテスマのヨハネは投獄されておらず、サリムに近いアイノンでバプテスマを授けていました。そこは水が豊富にあったからです。
25 ある日、ヨハネの弟子たちと一人のユダヤ人の間で、ヨハネのバプテスマとイエスのバプテスマのどちらがすぐれているかで議論になりました。 26 弟子たちは、ヨハネのところに来てぐちをこぼしました。「先生。ヨルダン川の向こう岸でお会いした、あなたがメシヤだとおっしゃったあの方も、バプテスマを授けておられるそうです。みんなこちらには来ないで、どんどんあの方のほうへ行ってしまいます。」 27 ヨハネは答えました。「天の神様が、一人一人にそれぞれの役割を決めてくださいます。 28 私の役目は、だれもがあの方のところへ行けるように道を備えることです。私はキリストではないと、はっきり言ったはずです。あの方のために道を備えるために、私はここにいるのです。 29 一番魅力を感じるものに人々が集まるのは当然で、花嫁は花婿のもとへ行き、花婿の友達は花婿といっしょに喜びます。私は花婿の友達だから、花婿の喜ぶ声を聞くと、うれしくてたまらないのです。 30 あの方はますます偉大になり、私はますます力を失います。
31 あの方は天から来られた方で、ほかのだれよりも偉大なお方です。地から出た者は、地上のことしかわかりません。 32 あの方は、見たこと聞いたことをあかしされますが、それを信じる人はなんと少ないことでしょう。 33 そのあかしを信じれば、神が真理の源であることがわかります。 34 神から遣わされたあの方は、神のことばをお話しになります。神の御霊が無限に注がれているからです。 35 父なる神はこの方を愛し、万物をこの方にお与えになりました。 36 この方は神の御子なのです。この方に救っていただけると信じる者はだれでも、永遠のいのちを得ます。しかし、この方に従わない者は、天国を見ることができないばかりか、神の怒りがその人の上にとどまるのです。」

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”(G)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)
9 “How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)
16 For God so loved(V) the world that he gave(W) his one and only Son,(X) that whoever believes(Y) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(Z) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AA) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AB) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AC) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AD) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AE) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AF) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AG) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]
31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
