The Righteous Reign of the Coming King
9 [a] But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 [b] The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
on them light has shined.
3 You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
4 For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.

2 O Eternel, |tu fais abonder l’allégresse[b],
tu fais jaillir |une très grande joie
et l’on se réjouit devant toi |tout comme au temps de la moisson,
ou comme on crie de joie |lors du partage d’un butin.
3 Car le joug qui pesait sur lui,
le bâton qui frappait son dos,
le gourdin de son oppresseur,
toi, tu les as brisés |tout comme au jour |de la défaite de Madian[c].
4 Toute chaussure de guerrier |qui martèle le sol,
et tout manteau |que l’on a roulé dans le sang
seront livrés aux flammes,
pour être consumés.

9 [a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness(C)
have seen a great light;(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
a light has dawned.(F)
3 You have enlarged the nation(G)
and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(I)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(M)

7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud,
be gracious to me and answer me!
8 ‘Come,’ my heart says, ‘seek his face!’
Your face, Lord, do I seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me.
Do not turn your servant away in anger,
you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 If my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me up.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.

Divisions in the Church
10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters.[b] 12 What I mean is that each of you says, ‘I belong to Paul’, or ‘I belong to Apollos’, or ‘I belong to Cephas’, or ‘I belong to Christ.’ 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God[c] that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power.

18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

10 Il faut cependant, frères et sœurs, que je vous adresse une recommandation instante, et c’est au nom de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ que je le fais. Vivez tous ensemble en pleine harmonie ! Ne laissez pas de division s’introduire entre vous ! Soyez parfaitement unis en ayant une même conviction, une même façon de penser ! 11 En effet, mes frères et sœurs, j’ai été informé par les gens de la maison de Chloé[a] que la discorde règne parmi vous. 12 Voici ce que je veux dire : chacun de vous tient ce type de langage : « Pour moi, c’est Paul ! » ou : « Pour moi, c’est Apollos[b] ! » ou : « Pour moi, c’est Pierre ! » ou encore : « Pour moi, c’est Christ ! »
13 Voyons : Christ serait-il divisé ? Paul aurait-il été crucifié pour vous ? Ou bien est-ce au nom de Paul que vous avez été baptisés ? 14 Je remercie Dieu de n’avoir baptisé aucun de vous, sauf Crispus et Gaïus[c]. 15 Personne, en tout cas, ne peut prétendre avoir été baptisé en mon nom. 16 – Ah si ! J’ai baptisé encore les gens de la maison de Stéphanas. A part ceux-là, je crois n’avoir baptisé personne. 17 Car ce n’est pas pour baptiser que Christ m’a envoyé, c’est pour proclamer l’Evangile. Et cela, sans recourir à la sagesse des beaux discours, afin de ne pas vider de son sens la mort de Christ sur la croix.

18 En effet, la prédication de la mort de Christ sur une croix est une folie aux yeux de ceux qui se perdent. Mais pour nous qui sommes sauvés, elle est la puissance même de Dieu.

Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee
12 Now when Jesus[a] heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
15 ‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,
on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.’
17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’[b]

18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

12 Quand Jésus apprit que Jean avait été emprisonné, il se retira en Galilée, 13 mais il ne resta pas à Nazareth. Il alla s’établir à Capernaüm, une ville située au bord du lac, dans les territoires de Zabulon et de Nephtali. 14 Ainsi s’accomplit cette parole du prophète Esaïe qui avait annoncé :
15 Ecoute, ô toi, terre de Zabulon |et toi, terre de Nephtali,
contrée voisine de la mer, |située au-delà du Jourdain,
ô toi, Galilée des populations étrangères :
