Satana învinuieşte pe Iov
2 Fiii lui Dumnezeu au venit într-o zi(A) de s-au înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. Şi a venit şi Satana în mijlocul lor şi s-a înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. 2 Domnul a zis Satanei: „De unde vii?” Şi Satana a răspuns(B) Domnului: „De la cutreierarea pământului şi de la plimbarea pe care am făcut-o pe el.” 3 Domnul a zis Satanei: „Ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu este nimeni ca el pe pământ. Este un om fără prihană(C) şi curat la suflet. El se teme de Dumnezeu şi se abate de la rău. El se ţine tare(D) în neprihănirea lui, şi tu Mă îndemni să-l pierd(E) fără pricină.” 4 Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: „Piele pentru piele! Omul dă tot ce are pentru viaţa lui. 5 Dar ia întinde-Ţi(F) mâna şi atinge-Te de oasele(G) şi de carnea lui, şi sunt încredinţat că Te va blestema în faţă.” 6 Domnul(H) a zis Satanei: „Iată, ţi-l dau pe mână: numai cruţă-i viaţa.” 7 Şi Satana a plecat dinaintea Domnului.
Apoi a lovit pe Iov cu o bubă rea, din talpa(I) piciorului până în creştetul capului. 8 Şi Iov a luat un ciob să se scarpine şi a şezut pe cenuşă(J). 9 Nevastă-sa i-a zis: „Tu rămâi(K) neclintit(L) în neprihănirea ta! Blestemă pe Dumnezeu şi mori!” 10 Dar Iov i-a răspuns: „Vorbeşti ca o femeie nebună. Ce, primim(M) de la Dumnezeu binele şi să nu primim şi răul?”
În toate(N) acestea, Iov n-a păcătuit(O) deloc cu buzele lui.
Cei trei prieteni vin la Iov
11 Trei prieteni(P) ai lui Iov, Elifaz din Teman(Q), Bildad din Şuah(R) şi Ţofar din Naama, au aflat de toate nenorocirile care-l loviseră. S-au sfătuit şi au plecat de acasă să se ducă să-i plângă de milă(S) şi să-l mângâie. 12 Ridicându-şi ochii de departe, nu l-au mai cunoscut. Şi au ridicat glasul şi au plâns. Şi-au sfâşiat mantalele şi au aruncat(T) cu ţărână în văzduh deasupra capetelor lor. 13 Şi au şezut pe pământ, lângă el, şapte zile şi şapte(U) nopţi, fără să-i spună o vorbă, căci vedeau cât de mare îi este durerea.

Satan Attacks Job's Health
2 Again (A)there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 3 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still (B)holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him (C)without reason.” 4 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. 5 But (D)stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will (E)curse you to your face.” 6 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome (F)sores from (G)the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took (H)a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in (I)the ashes.
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still (J)hold fast your integrity? (K)Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the (L)foolish women would speak. (M)Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”[a] (N)In all this Job did not (O)sin with his lips.
Job's Three Friends
11 Now when Job's three (P)friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz (Q)the Temanite, Bildad (R)the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to (S)show him sympathy and comfort him. 12 And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they (T)tore their robes and sprinkled (U)dust on their heads toward heaven. 13 And they sat with him on the ground (V)seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

Napadač ponovo napada Joba
2 Jednog su dana nebeska bića ponovo došla pred BOGA, a s njima je došao i Napadač.
2 »Gdje si bio?« upitao je BOG Napadača.
»Lutao sam Zemljom«, odgovorio mu je Napadač. »Obišao sam je uzduž i poprijeko.«
3 »Jesi li primijetio mog slugu Joba?« upitao ga je BOG. »Nitko na Zemlji nije mu ravan. Besprijekoran je i pošten. Poštuje Boga i kloni se zla. Iako si tražio da ga upropastiš bez razloga, on je i dalje vjeran.«
4 »Koža za kožu!« odgovorio je Napadač. »Za svoj će život čovjek dati sve što ima. 5 Ako napadneš njegove kosti i meso, proklet će te u lice.«
6 »Pa, dobro«, rekao je BOG Napadaču. »Job je u tvojim rukama. Samo mu poštedi život.«
7 Napadač je otišao od BOGA i nanio Jobu bolne čireve od glave do pete. 8 Job je nato uzeo dio slomljenog crijepa pa se njime češao dok je sjedio u pepelu.
9 »Zar i dalje nastojiš ostati vjeran?« upitala ga je njegova žena. »Prokuni Boga i umri.«
10 »Govoriš kao jedna od onih sramotnih žena koje nemaju poštovanja prema Bogu«, odgovorio joj je Job. »Zar da od Boga prihvaćamo samo dobro, ali ne i nevolje?« I, usprkos svemu, Job nije rekao ništa čime bi sagriješio.
Jobovi prijatelji
11 Tada su trojica Jobovih prijatelja—Elifaz iz Temana, Bildad iz Šuaha i Sofar iz Naama—čuli za nevolje koje su ga snašle. Krenuli su od svojih kuća, sastali se i dogovorili da će otići utješiti Joba i iskazati mu suosjećanje. 12 Ugledali su ga izdaleka, ali jedva su ga prepoznali. Briznuli su u glasan plač, razderali odjeću i bacili prašinu uvis i po svojim glavama.[a] 13 Potom su sedam dana i sedam noći s njim sjedili na zemlji. I nitko mu nije rekao ni riječ jer su vidjeli kolika je njegova bol.
