Ieremia este aruncat în închisoare
37 Zedechia, fiul lui Iosia, a fost pus să domnească peste Iuda de către Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului. El a domnit în locul lui Iehoiachin[a], fiul lui Iehoiachim. 2 Dar nici el, nici slujitorii lui, nici poporul din ţară nu au ascultat cuvintele Domnului, rostite de profetul Ieremia.
3 Regele Zedechia a trimis pe Iehucal, fiul lui Şelemia, şi pe preotul Ţefania, fiul lui Maaseia, la profetul Ieremia să-i spună: „Te rugăm, mijloceşte pentru noi înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru.“
4 Pe atunci, Ieremia era liber să umble prin popor, căci încă nu fusese aruncat în temniţă. 5 Oştirea lui Faraon ieşise din Egipt, iar când caldeenii, care asediau Ierusalimul, au auzit vestea aceasta, s-au retras din Ierusalim.
6 Cuvântul Domnului a venit la profetul Ieremia şi i-a zis: 7 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Spuneţi-i regelui lui Iuda care v-a trimis la Mine că oştirea lui Faraon, care a ieşit din Egipt pentru a vă veni în ajutor, se va întoarce înapoi în ţara ei, în Egipt, 8 iar caldeenii vor reveni şi vor lupta împotriva acestei cetăţi; ei o vor cuceri şi îi vor da foc.»“
9 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Nu vă înşelaţi singuri, zicând: ‘Caldeenii se vor depărta definitiv de la noi!’, căci ei nu se vor depărta. 10 Şi chiar dacă aţi birui întreaga oştire a caldeenilor, care se luptă împotriva voastră, şi ar mai rămâne dintre ei doar câţiva oameni răniţi în corturile lor, tot se vor ridica şi vor da foc acestei cetăţi!»“
11 După ce oştirea caldeenilor s-a retras din faţa Ierusalimului de frica oştirii lui Faraon, 12 Ieremia a vrut să iasă din Ierusalim ca să meargă în teritoriul lui Beniamin, pentru a intra în posesia proprietăţii pe care o avea în mijlocul poporului de acolo. 13 Când profetul Ieremia a ajuns însă la Poarta lui Beniamin, căpitanul gărzilor, al cărui nume era Ireia, fiul lui Şelemia, fiul lui Hanania, a pus mâna pe el, zicându-i:
– Tu vrei să dezertezi la caldeeni!
14 – Ceea ce spui este o minciună! i-a răspuns Ieremia. Nu vreau să dezertez la caldeeni.
Dar Ireia nu l-a ascultat, ci l-a înşfăcat şi l-a dus înaintea conducătorilor. 15 Aceştia s-au mâniat pe Ieremia, l-au bătut şi l-au întemniţat în casa scribului Ionatan pe care o transformaseră în temniţă. 16 Ieremia a fost pus într-o celulă subterană a temniţei[b] şi acolo a stat multă vreme. 17 Apoi regele Zedechia a trimis după el, iar Ieremia a fost adus la palat. Acolo regele l-a întrebat în secret:
– Ai vreun cuvânt din partea Domnului?
– Da, i-a răspuns Ieremia. Vei fi dat în mâinile împăratului Babilonului.
18 Ieremia i-a mai zis regelui Zedechia:
– Cu ce am greşit faţă de tine, faţă de slujitorii tăi şi faţă de poporul acesta de m-aţi aruncat în temniţă? 19 Unde vă sunt profeţii care profeţeau că împăratul Babilonului nu va veni împotriva voastră şi împotriva ţării acesteia? 20 Acum, stăpâne, regele meu, te rog, ascultă-mă! Fie bine primită cererea mea înaintea ta! Nu mă trimite înapoi în casa scribului Ionatan, ca nu cumva să mor acolo!
21 Regele Zedechia a poruncit ca Ieremia să fie pus în curtea temniţei şi să i se dea în fiecare zi pâine de pe Strada Brutarilor, până când avea să se termine toată pâinea din cetate. Şi astfel Ieremia a rămas în curtea temniţei.

37 În locul lui Ieconia, fiul lui Ioiachim, a început să domnească Zedechia(A), fiul lui Iosia. El a fost pus împărat în ţara lui Iuda de Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului. 2 Dar(B) nici el, nici slujitorii lui, nici poporul din ţară n-au ascultat cuvintele pe care le-a rostit Domnul prin prorocul Ieremia. 3 Împăratul Zedechia a trimis pe Iucal, fiul lui Şelemia, şi pe Ţefania(C), fiul lui Maaseia, preotul, la prorocul Ieremia, să-i spună: „Mijloceşte pentru noi la Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru.” 4 Pe atunci, Ieremia umbla slobod prin popor: nu-l aruncaseră încă în temniţă. 5 Oastea(D) lui Faraon ieşise din Egipt, şi haldeenii(E), care împresurau Ierusalimul, când auziseră vestea aceasta, plecaseră din Ierusalim. 6 Atunci, Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit prorocului Ieremia astfel: 7 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Iată ce să spuneţi împăratului lui Iuda, care(F) v-a trimis la Mine să Mă întrebaţi: «Iată că oastea lui Faraon, care pornise să vă ajute, se întoarce în ţara ei, în Egipt; 8 iar(G) haldeenii se vor întoarce, vor bate iarăşi cetatea aceasta, o vor lua şi o vor arde cu foc».’ ” 9 „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Nu vă înşelaţi zicând: «Haldeenii se vor depărta de la noi!» Căci nu se vor depărta! 10 Şi chiar dacă(H) aţi bate toată oastea haldeenilor, care se războiesc cu voi, chiar dacă n-ar mai rămâne din ei decât vreo câţiva oameni răniţi, tot s-ar ridica fiecare din cortul lui şi ar arde cetatea aceasta cu foc’.” 11 Pe când se depărtase oastea(I) haldeenilor de Ierusalim de frica oastei lui Faraon, 12 Ieremia a vrut să iasă din Ierusalim, ca să se ducă în ţara lui Beniamin şi să scape din mijlocul poporului. 13 Când a ajuns însă la poarta lui Beniamin, căpitanul străjerilor, numit Ireia, fiul lui Şelemia, fiul lui Hanania, era acolo şi a pus mâna pe prorocul Ieremia, zicând: „Tu vrei să treci la haldeeni!” 14 Ieremia a răspuns: „Nu este adevărat! Nu vreau să trec la haldeeni!” Dar Ireia n-a vrut să-l creadă, ci a apucat pe Ieremia şi l-a dus înaintea căpeteniilor. 15 Căpeteniile, mâniate pe Ieremia, l-au lovit şi l-au aruncat în temniţă(J), în casa logofătului Ionatan, căci o prefăcuseră în temniţă. 16 Aşa a intrat(K) Ieremia în temniţă şi în gherlă, unde a stat multă vreme. 17 Împăratul Zedechia a trimis să-l aducă şi l-a întrebat în taină la el acasă. El a zis: „Ai vreun cuvânt din partea Domnului?” Ieremia a răspuns: „Da”. Şi a adăugat: „Vei fi dat în mâinile împăratului Babilonului!” 18 Ieremia a mai spus împăratului Zedechia: „Cu ce am păcătuit eu împotriva ta, împotriva slujitorilor tăi şi împotriva poporului acestuia de m-aţi aruncat în temniţă? 19 Şi unde sunt prorocii voştri care vă proroceau şi ziceau: ‘Împăratul Babilonului nu va veni împotriva voastră, nici împotriva ţării acesteia!’? 20 Acum ascultă, te rog, împărate, domnul meu! Fie bine primite înaintea ta rugăminţile mele! Nu mă trimite iarăşi în casa logofătului Ionatan, ca nu cumva să mor acolo!” 21 Împăratul Zedechia a poruncit să păzească pe Ieremia în curtea(L) temniţei şi să-i dea în fiecare zi o pâine din uliţa brutarilor, până(M) s-a sfârşit toată pâinea din cetate. Astfel Ieremia a rămas în curtea temniţei.

37 Zedekiah(A) son of Josiah was made king(B) of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin[a](C) son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention(D) to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent(E) Jehukal(F) son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah(G) son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray(H) to the Lord our God for us.”
4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.(I) 5 Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt,(J) and when the Babylonians[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew(K) from Jerusalem.(L)
6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(M) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(N) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(O) 8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(P) it and burn(Q) it down.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(R) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(S) this city down.”
11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn(T) from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(U) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(V) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(W)
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(X) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten(Y) and imprisoned(Z) in the house(AA) of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent(AB) for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked(AC) him privately,(AD) “Is there any word from the Lord?”
“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered(AE) into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime(AF) have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets(AG) who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’? 20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”(AH)
21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread(AI) in the city was gone.(AJ) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(AK)

37 And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.
2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.
3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.
4 Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
5 Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then came the word of the Lord unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,
7 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.
8 And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
9 Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.
10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.
11 And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,
12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.
13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.
16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;
17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?
19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
