Isaiah 40:1-11

God’s People Are Comforted
40 Comfort, O comfort my people,
says your God.(A)
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that she has served her term,
that her penalty is paid,
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double for all her sins.(B)
3 A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.(C)
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.(D)
5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
6 A voice says, “Cry out!”
And I said,[a] “What shall I cry?”
All flesh is grass;
their constancy is like the flower of the field.(E)
7 The grass withers; the flower fades,
[[when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
surely the people are grass.(F)
8 The grass withers; the flower fades,]][b]
but the word of our God will stand forever.(G)
9 Get you up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;[c]
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;[d]
lift it up, do not fear;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Here is your God!”(H)
10 See, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him
and his recompense before him.(I)
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms
and carry them in his bosom
and gently lead the mother sheep.(J)

que son temps de corvée |est accompli,
que son péché est expié,
qu’elle a reçu de l’Eternel
deux fois le prix de ses péchés !
3 On entend une voix crier :
« Dégagez un chemin |dans le désert |pour l’Eternel,
nivelez dans la steppe
une route pour notre Dieu[a] !
4 Toute vallée sera élevée,
toute montagne abaissée |ainsi que toutes les collines.
Les lieux accidentés |se changeront en plaine,
les rochers escarpés |deviendront des vallées.
5 Alors la gloire |de l’Eternel |sera manifestée,
et tous les hommes |la verront à la fois.
L’Eternel l’a promis. »
6 Une voix interpelle : |« Va, proclame un message ! »
Une autre lui répond : |« Que dois-je proclamer ?
– Que tout homme est pareil à l’herbe
et toute sa beauté |comme la fleur des champs[b] ;
7 car l’herbe se dessèche |et la fleur se flétrit
quand le souffle de l’Eternel |passe dessus.
En vérité : les hommes |sont pareils à de l’herbe.
8 Oui, l’herbe se dessèche |et la fleur se flétrit,
mais la parole |de notre Dieu
subsistera toujours. »
9 O Sion, messagère |d’une bonne nouvelle,
gravis une haute montagne !
Crie avec force,
Jérusalem, |messagère d’une bonne nouvelle !
Oui, crie sans crainte,
annonce aux villes de Juda :
« Voici votre Dieu vient ! »
10 Voici l’Eternel, le Seigneur ;
il vient avec puissance
et son bras lui assure |la souveraineté.
Voici : ses récompenses |sont avec lui,
et le fruit de son œuvre |va devant lui.
11 Comme un berger, |il paîtra son troupeau
et il rassemblera |les agneaux dans ses bras.
Sur son sein, il les porte
et conduit doucement |les brebis qui allaitent[c].

for he will speak peace to his people,

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.(C)

14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.(A) 15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers,[a] if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it.” 16 So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak:
“Fellow Israelites[b] and others who fear God, listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.(B) 18 For about forty years he put up with[c] them in the wilderness.(C) 19 After he had destroyed seven peoples in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance(D) 20 for about four hundred fifty years. After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel.(E) 21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years.(F) 22 When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony about him he said, ‘I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.’(G) 23 Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised;(H) 24 before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.(I) 25 And as John was finishing his work, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the strap of the sandals[d] on his feet.’(J)
26 “Brothers and sisters,[e] you descendants of Abraham’s family and others who fear God, to us[f] the message of this salvation has been sent.

14 Quant à eux, ils quittèrent Pergé et continuèrent leur route jusqu’à Antioche en Pisidie. Là, ils se rendirent à la synagogue le jour du sabbat et s’assirent.
15 Après qu’on eut fait la lecture dans la Loi et les prophètes, les chefs de la synagogue leur firent dire : Frères, si vous avez quelques mots à adresser à la communauté, vous avez la parole.
16 Alors Paul se leva ; d’un geste de la main il demanda le silence et dit :
Israélites et vous tous qui craignez Dieu, écoutez-moi ! 17 Le Dieu de notre peuple d’Israël a choisi nos ancêtres. Il a fait grandir le peuple pendant son séjour en Egypte. Ensuite, en déployant sa puissance, il l’en a fait sortir. 18 Pendant quarante ans environ, il l’a supporté[a] dans le désert. 19 Après avoir détruit sept peuplades dans le pays de Canaan, il a donné leur territoire à son peuple. 20 Tout cela a duré environ 450 ans.
Après cela, il a donné[b] à nos ancêtres des chefs jusqu’à l’époque du prophète Samuel. 21 Alors le peuple a demandé un roi et Dieu leur a donné Saül, fils de Qish, de la tribu de Benjamin. Celui-ci a régné sur eux pendant quarante ans. 22 Mais Dieu l’a rejeté et leur a choisi pour roi David. C’est à lui qu’il a rendu ce témoignage :
En David, fils d’Isaï, j’ai trouvé un homme qui correspond à mes désirs[c], il accomplira toute ma volonté.
23 Or, voici que Dieu vient d’accorder à Israël un Sauveur parmi les descendants de David, comme il l’avait promis, et ce Sauveur, c’est Jésus. 24 Avant sa venue, Jean avait appelé tous les Israélites à se faire baptiser en signe d’un profond changement. 25 Arrivé au terme de sa vie, Jean disait encore : « Qui pensez-vous que je suis ? Je ne suis pas celui que vous attendiez ! Non ! il vient après moi, et je ne mérite pas de dénouer ses sandales. »
26 Mes frères, vous qui êtes les descendants d’Abraham et vous qui craignez Dieu et qui êtes présents parmi nous, c’est à nous[d] que Dieu a envoyé cette Parole de salut.

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.(A)
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father.(B) 60 But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” 61 They said to her, “None of your relatives has this name.” 62 Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. 63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 Fear came over all their neighbors, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.(C)
Zechariah’s Prophecy
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:(D)
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favorably on[a] his people and redeemed them.(E)
69 He has raised up a mighty savior[b] for us
in the house of his child David,(F)
70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,(G)
71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors
and has remembered his holy covenant,(H)
73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,
to grant us 74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,(I) 75 in holiness and righteousness
in his presence all our days.(J)
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,(K)
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.(L)
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break[c] upon[d] us,
79 to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”(M)
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.(N)

57 Le moment arriva où Elisabeth devait accoucher. Elle donna naissance à un fils. 58 Ses voisins et les membres de sa famille apprirent combien le Seigneur avait été bon pour elle, et ils se réjouissaient avec elle.
59 Le huitième jour après sa naissance, ils vinrent pour la circoncision du nouveau-né. Tout le monde voulait l’appeler Zacharie comme son père, 60 mais sa mère intervint et dit : Non, il s’appellera Jean.
61 – Mais, lui fit-on remarquer, personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom-là !
62 Alors ils interrogèrent le père, par des gestes, pour savoir quel nom il voulait donner à l’enfant. 63 Zacharie se fit apporter une tablette et, au grand étonnement de tous, il y traça ces mots : Son nom est Jean.
64 A cet instant, sa bouche s’ouvrit et sa langue se délia : il parlait et louait Dieu.
65 Tous les gens du voisinage furent remplis de crainte, et l’on parlait de tous ces événements dans toutes les montagnes de Judée. 66 Tous ceux qui les apprenaient en étaient profondément impressionnés et disaient : « Que sera donc cet enfant ? » Car le Seigneur était avec lui.
67 Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l’Esprit Saint et prophétisa en ces termes :
68 Loué soit le Seigneur, |Dieu d’Israël,
car il est venu prendre soin de son peuple |et il l’a délivré.
69 Pour nous, il a fait naître |parmi les descendants |du roi David, son serviteur,
un Libérateur plein de force.
70 Il vient d’accomplir la promesse |qu’il avait faite |depuis les premiers temps |par la voix de ses saints prophètes
71 qu’il nous délivrerait |de tous nos ennemis, |et du pouvoir de ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 Il manifeste sa bonté |à l’égard de nos pères

73 Il accomplit pour nous |le serment qu’il a fait |à notre ancêtre, Abraham,
