Impending Judgment on Zion

10 “Now(A) I will rise,” says the Lord;
“Now I will be exalted,
Now I will lift Myself up.
11 (B)You shall conceive chaff,
You shall bring forth stubble;
Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
12 And the people shall be like the burnings of lime;
(C)Like thorns cut up they shall be burned in the fire.
13 Hear, (D)you who are afar off, what I have done;
And you who are near, acknowledge My might.”

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid;
Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:
“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring (E)fire?
Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
15 He who (F)walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
He who despises the gain of oppressions,
Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
And (G)shuts his eyes from seeing evil:
16 He will dwell on [a]high;
His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;
Bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.

The Land of the Majestic King

17 Your eyes will see the King in His (H)beauty;
They will see the land that is very far off.
18 Your heart will meditate on terror:
(I)“Where is the scribe?
Where is he who weighs?
Where is he who counts the towers?”
19 (J)You will not see a fierce people,
(K)A people of obscure speech, beyond perception,
Of a [b]stammering tongue that you cannot understand.

20 (L)Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
Your eyes will see (M)Jerusalem, a quiet home,
A tabernacle that will not be taken down;
(N)Not one of (O)its stakes will ever be removed,
Nor will any of its cords be broken.
21 But there the majestic Lord will be for us
A place of broad rivers and streams,
In which no [c]galley with oars will sail,
Nor majestic ships pass by
22 (For the Lord is our (P)Judge,
The Lord is our (Q)Lawgiver,
(R)The Lord is our King;
He will save us);
23 Your tackle is loosed,
They could not strengthen their mast,
They could not spread the sail.

Then the prey of great plunder is divided;
The lame take the prey.
24 And the inhabitant will not say, “I am sick”;
(S)The people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity.

Judgment on the Nations

34 Come (T)near, you nations, to hear;
And heed, you people!
(U)Let the earth hear, and all that is in it,
The world and all things that come forth from it.
For the indignation of the Lord is against all nations,
And His fury against all their armies;
He has utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to the (V)slaughter.
Also their slain shall be thrown out;
(W)Their stench shall rise from their corpses,
And the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
(X)All the host of heaven shall be dissolved,
And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll;
(Y)All their host shall fall down
As the leaf falls from the vine,
And as (Z)fruit falling from a fig tree.

“For (AA)My sword shall be bathed in heaven;
Indeed it (AB)shall come down on Edom,
And on the people of My curse, for judgment.
The (AC)sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It is made [d]overflowing with fatness,
With the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For (AD)the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
The wild oxen shall come down with them,
And the young bulls with the mighty bulls;
Their land shall be soaked with blood,
And their dust [e]saturated with fatness.”

For it is the day of the Lord’s (AE)vengeance,
The year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
(AF)Its streams shall be turned into pitch,
And its dust into brimstone;
Its land shall become burning pitch.
10 It shall not be quenched night or day;
(AG)Its smoke shall ascend forever.
(AH)From generation to generation it shall lie waste;
No one shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 (AI)But the [f]pelican and the [g]porcupine shall possess it,
Also the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
And (AJ)He shall stretch out over it
The line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
12 They shall call its nobles to the kingdom,
But none shall be there, and all its princes shall be nothing.

13 And (AK)thorns shall come up in its palaces,
Nettles and brambles in its fortresses;
(AL)It shall be a habitation of jackals,
A courtyard for ostriches.
14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the [h]jackals,
And the wild goat shall bleat to its companion;
Also [i]the night creature shall rest there,
And find for herself a place of rest.
15 There the arrow snake shall make her nest and lay eggs
And hatch, and gather them under her shadow;
There also shall the hawks be gathered,
Every one with her mate.

16 “Search from (AM)the book of the Lord, and read:
Not one of these shall fail;
Not one shall lack her mate.
For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the lot for them,
And His hand has divided it among them with a measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From generation to generation they shall dwell in it.”

The Future Glory of Zion

35 The (AN)wilderness and the [j]wasteland shall be glad for them,
And the (AO)desert[k] shall rejoice and blossom as the rose;
(AP)It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice,
Even with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
The excellence of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the (AQ)glory of the Lord,
The excellency of our God.

(AR)Strengthen the [l]weak hands,
And make firm the [m]feeble knees.
Say to those who are fearful-hearted,
“Be strong, do not fear!
Behold, your God will come with (AS)vengeance,
With the recompense of God;
He will come and (AT)save you.”

Then the (AU)eyes of the blind shall be opened,
And (AV)the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Then the (AW)lame shall leap like a deer,
And the (AX)tongue of the dumb sing.
For (AY)waters shall burst forth in the wilderness,
And streams in the desert.
The parched ground shall become a pool,
And the thirsty land springs of water;
In (AZ)the habitation of jackals, where each lay,
There shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

A (BA)highway shall be there, and a road,
And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
(BB)The unclean shall not pass over it,
But it shall be for others.
Whoever walks the road, although a fool,
Shall not go astray.
(BC)No lion shall be there,
Nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it;
It shall not be found there.
But the redeemed shall walk there,
10 And the (BD)ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness,
And (BE)sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Sennacherib Boasts Against the Lord(BF)

36 Now (BG)it came to pass in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. Then the king of Assyria sent the [n]Rabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. And he stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field. And (BH)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, (BI)Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to him.

(BJ)Then the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: “What confidence is this in which you trust? I say you speak of having plans and power for war; but they are [o]mere words. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? Look! You are trusting in the (BK)staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who (BL)trust in him.

“But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?” ’ Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses—if you are able on your part to put riders on them! How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 10 Have I now come up without the Lord against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’ ”

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in [p]Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

12 But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?”

13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you; 15 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ’ 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; (BM)and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any one of the (BN)gods of the nations delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Indeed, have they delivered (BO)Samaria from my hand? 20 Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”

21 But they [q]held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

Let the earth(AU) hear, and all that is in it,
    the world, and all that comes out of it!(AV)

    like shriveled figs from the fig tree.

My sword(BH) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    see, it descends in judgment on Edom,(BI)
    the people I have totally destroyed.(BJ)
The sword(BK) of the Lord is bathed in blood,
    it is covered with fat—

with divine retribution
    he will come to save(DK) you.”

Then will the eyes of the blind be opened(DL)

Then will the lame(DN) leap like a deer,(DO)

Water will gush forth in the wilderness

The burning sand will become a pool,

10     and those the Lord has rescued(EC) will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;(ED)
    everlasting joy(EE) will crown their heads.
Gladness(EF) and joy will overtake them,

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem(EH)

36 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s(EI) reign, Sennacherib(EJ) king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.(EK) Then the king of Assyria sent his field commander with a large army from Lachish(EL) to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. When the commander stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field,(EM) Eliakim(EN) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator,(EO) Shebna(EP) the secretary,(EQ) and Joah(ER) son of Asaph the recorder(ES) went out to him.

The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:

“‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? You say you have counsel and might for war—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel(ET) against me? Look, I know you are depending(EU) on Egypt,(EV) that splintered reed(EW) of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. But if you say to me, “We are depending(EX) on the Lord our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed,(EY) saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar”?(EZ)

“‘Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses(FA)—if you can put riders on them! How then can you repulse one officer of the least of my master’s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt(FB) for chariots(FC) and horsemen[e]?(FD) 10 Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this land without the Lord? The Lord himself told(FE) me to march against this country and destroy it.’”

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah(FF) said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(FG) since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”

12 But the commander replied, “Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?(FH)

13 Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew,(FI) “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!(FJ) 14 This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive(FK) you. He cannot deliver you! 15 Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, ‘The Lord will surely deliver(FL) us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’(FM)

16 “Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree(FN) and drink water from your own cistern,(FO) 17 until I come and take you to a land like your own(FP)—a land of grain and new wine,(FQ) a land of bread and vineyards.

18 “Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?(FR) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim?(FS) Have they rescued Samaria(FT) from my hand? 20 Who of all the gods(FU) of these countries have been able to save their lands from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”(FV)

21 But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”(FW)

22 Then Eliakim(FX) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder(FY) went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn,(FZ) and told him what the field commander had said.

  5. Isaiah 36:9 Or charioteers

13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only (A)do not use liberty as an (B)opportunity for the flesh, but (C)through love serve one another. 14 For (D)all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: (E)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!

Walking in the Spirit

16 I say then: (F)Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For (G)the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, (H)so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But (I)if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now (J)the works of the flesh are evident, which are: [a]adultery, [b]fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, [c]murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that (K)those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But (L)the fruit of the Spirit is (M)love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, (N)goodness, (O)faithfulness, 23 [d]gentleness, self-control. (P)Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s (Q)have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 (R)If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 (S)Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Life by the Spirit

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.(A) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a];(B) rather, serve one another(C) humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](D) 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit,(E) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.(F) 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.(G) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want.(H) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit,(I) you are not under the law.(J)

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,(K) impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.(L) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.(M)

22 But the fruit(N) of the Spirit is love,(O) joy, peace,(P) forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.(Q) Against such things there is no law.(R) 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh(S) with its passions and desires.(T) 25 Since we live by the Spirit,(U) let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited,(V) provoking and envying each other.

Oppressed by the Wicked but Rejoicing in the Lord

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

64 Hear my voice, O God, in my [a]meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
(A)And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.

They encourage themselves in an evil matter;
They talk of laying snares secretly;
(B)They say, “Who will see them?”
They devise iniquities:
“We have perfected a shrewd scheme.”
Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
(C)All who see them shall flee away.
All men shall fear,
And shall (D)declare the work of God;
For they shall wisely consider His doing.

10 (E)The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him.
And all the upright in heart shall glory.

Psalm 64[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;(A)
    protect my life from the threat of the enemy.(B)

Hide me from the conspiracy(C) of the wicked,(D)
    from the plots of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords(E)
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.(F)
They shoot from ambush at the innocent;(G)
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.(H)

They encourage each other in evil plans,
    they talk about hiding their snares;(I)
    they say, “Who will see it[b]?”(J)
They plot injustice and say,
    “We have devised a perfect plan!”
    Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

But God will shoot them with his arrows;
    they will suddenly be struck down.
He will turn their own tongues against them(K)
    and bring them to ruin;
    all who see them will shake their heads(L) in scorn.(M)
All people will fear;(N)
    they will proclaim the works of God
    and ponder what he has done.(O)

10 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord(P)
    and take refuge in him;(Q)
    all the upright in heart will glory in him!(R)
