A New Heaven and Earth

10 But (A)the day of the Lord (B)will come like a thief, in which (C)the heavens (D)will pass away with a roar and the (E)elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and (F)the earth and [a]its works will be [b]discovered.

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 (G)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which (H)the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the (I)elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His (J)promise we are looking for (K)new heavens and a new earth, (L)in which righteousness dwells.

14 (M)Therefore, (N)beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be (O)found (P)spotless and blameless by Him, at peace, 15 and regard the (Q)patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also (R)our beloved brother Paul, (S)according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of (T)these things, (U)in which there are some things that are hard to understand, which the untaught and (V)unstable distort, as they do also (W)the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, (X)beloved, knowing this beforehand, (Y)be on your guard so that you are not carried away by (Z)the error of [c](AA)unscrupulous people and (AB)lose your own [d]firm commitment, 18 but grow in the grace and (AC)knowledge of our (AD)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (AE)To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

10 But (A)the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then (B)the heavens will pass away with a roar, and (C)the heavenly bodies[a] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.[b]

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, (D)what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 (E)waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and (F)the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for (G)new heavens and a new earth (H)in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

14 (I)Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him (J)without spot or (K)blemish, and (L)at peace. 15 And count (M)the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as (N)our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you (O)according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. (P)There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, (Q)as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, (R)knowing this beforehand, (S)take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But (T)grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (U)To him be the glory both now and to the day of (V)eternity. Amen.
