Hô-sê-a Trị Vì I-sơ-ra-ên
(2 Sử 18:9-12)
17 Năm thứ mười hai của triều đại A-kha vua Giu-đa, Hô-sê-a con của Ê-la lên ngôi làm vua I-sơ-ra-ên tại Sa-ma-ri. Ông trị vì chín năm. 2 Ông làm điều tội lỗi trước mặt Chúa, nhưng không như các vua I-sơ-ra-ên trước ông. 3 Sanh-ma-nê-se vua A-sy-ri kéo đến đánh ông. Hô-sê-a trở thành một chư hầu của vua ấy và phải nộp triều cống cho vua ấy. 4 Nhưng vua A-sy-ri thấy Hô-sê-a có ý làm phản, vì ông đã sai sứ giả đến cầu xin Sô vua Ai-cập đến giúp đỡ. Ngoài ra ông cũng không nộp triều cống hằng năm cho vua A-sy-ri như thường làm nữa. Vì thế vua A-sy-ri đến bắt ông và giam ông vào ngục.
Dân I-sơ-ra-ên Bị Lưu Ðày
5 Bấy giờ vua A-sy-ri xâm lăng xứ và tiến đánh Sa-ma-ri. Vua ấy bao vây thành Sa-ma-ri ba năm. 6 Năm thứ chín của triều đại Hô-sê-a, vua A-sy-ri chiếm được thành Sa-ma-ri. Vua ấy bắt dân I-sơ-ra-ên đem về A-sy-ri. Ông cho họ định cư tại Ha-la, bên bờ Sông Ha-bơ, miền Gô-xan, và trong các thành của xứ Mê-đi.
7 Việc ấy xảy ra vì dân I-sơ-ra-ên đã phạm tội đối với Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của họ, Ðấng đã đem họ ra khỏi đất Ai-cập, tức khỏi tay của Pha-ra-ôn vua Ai-cập. Họ đã thờ phượng các thần khác, 8 sống theo các tập tục của những dân Chúa đã đuổi đi trước mặt dân I-sơ-ra-ên, và làm theo các thói tục do các vua I-sơ-ra-ên bày ra.
9 Dân I-sơ-ra-ên đã lén lút làm những việc không đẹp lòng Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của họ. Họ đã xây dựng cho họ những tế đàn trên các nơi cao trong các thành của họ, từ những tháp canh cho đến những thành trì kiên cố. 10 Họ dựng cho họ những trụ thờ bằng đá và những trụ thờ Nữ Thần A-sê-ra trên các núi đồi và dưới những cây xanh. 11 Họ thiêu dâng các lễ vật trên các tế đàn ở những nơi cao, giống như các dân Chúa đã đuổi đi trước mặt họ. Họ làm những điều tội lỗi chọc giận Chúa. 12 Họ thờ các thần tượng mà Chúa đã bảo, “Các ngươi chớ thờ chúng.” 13 Tuy Chúa đã sai các đấng tiên tri và các nhà tiên kiến đến cảnh cáo I-sơ-ra-ên và Giu-đa rằng, “Hãy quay khỏi những đường lối tội lỗi của các ngươi, và hãy tuân giữ những điều răn và mạng lịnh của Ta, tức toàn bộ luật pháp mà Ta đã truyền cho tổ tiên các ngươi và mọi điều Ta đã sai các tôi tớ Ta là các tiên tri rao bảo cho các ngươi.” 14 Nhưng họ không nghe và cứ ương ngạnh, giống như tổ tiên của họ đã làm, đó là những người đã không tin vào Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của họ. 15 Họ coi thường các mạng lịnh của Ngài và các giao ước Ngài đã lập với tổ tiên họ. Họ cũng coi thường những lời cảnh cáo mà Ngài đã sai các sứ giả của Ngài đến cảnh cáo họ. Họ cứ đi theo các thần tượng giả dối và trở thành những kẻ giả dối. Họ bắt chước các dân tộc chung quanh họ, tức các dân tộc mà Chúa đã căn dặn họ không được làm như các dân tộc ấy. 16 Họ loại bỏ Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của họ, mà đúc cho họ tượng hai con bò con và dựng những trụ thờ Nữ Thần A-sê-ra lên để thờ lạy. Họ thờ phượng các thiên binh trên trời và thờ lạy Thần Ba-anh. 17 Họ thiêu sống con trai và con gái của họ trong lửa để dâng cho các thần tượng. Họ tin theo các phù thủy và các thầy bói. Họ bán chính mình để làm những tội lỗi gớm ghiếc trước mặt Chúa và chọc giận Ngài. 18 Vì thế Chúa rất giận dân I-sơ-ra-ên, và Ngài đã cất bỏ họ khỏi thánh nhan Ngài, chỉ còn lại chi tộc Giu-đa.
19 Nhưng người Giu-đa cũng không vâng giữ các điều răn của Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của họ, nhưng đi theo các thói tục người I-sơ-ra-ên đã bày ra. 20 Vì thế Chúa đã từ bỏ toàn thể con cháu của I-sơ-ra-ên. Ngài phạt họ và phó họ vào tay những kẻ cướp đoạt họ cho đến khi Ngài loại hẳn họ ra khỏi thánh nhan Ngài.
21 Khi Ngài xé rách dân I-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi nhà Ða-vít, họ lập Giê-rô-bô-am con của Nê-bát lên làm vua. Giê-rô-bô-am đã lôi kéo dân I-sơ-ra-ên xa cách Chúa và đã xúi họ phạm tội trọng. 22 Dân I-sơ-ra-ên cứ tiếp tục đi theo những tội lỗi Giê-rô-bô-am đã gây ra. Họ không chịu từ bỏ những tội lỗi ấy 23 cho đến khi Chúa cất bỏ họ khỏi thánh nhan Ngài, như Ngài đã bảo trước qua các vị tiên tri, tức các tôi tớ Ngài. Vì thế I-sơ-ra-ên bị lưu đày khỏi xứ sở của họ, phải đến sống ở A-sy-ri cho đến ngày nay.
Dân Ngoại Ðịnh Cư tại Sa-ma-ri
24 Vua A-sy-ri bắt dân từ Ba-by-lôn, Cư-thác, A-va, Ha-mát, và Sê-phạc-va-im đến định cư trong các thành của Sa-ma-ri, thế chỗ của dân I-sơ-ra-ên. Các dân ấy đến chiếm lấy Sa-ma-ri và định cư trong các thành của xứ ấy. 25 Khi mới đến định cư tại đó, họ không thờ phượng Chúa, nên Chúa đã sai các sư tử đến vồ chết một số người của họ. 26 Người ta tâu với vua A-sy-ri rằng, “Các dân tộc mà ngài đã trục xuất và đày đến định cư trong các thành ở Sa-ma-ri không biết cách thức thờ phượng vị thần của xứ ấy. Vì thế vị thần của xứ ấy đã sai các sư tử đến vồ chết một số người của họ, bởi họ không biết cách thức thờ phượng vị thần ấy như thế nào.”
27 Vua A-sy-ri bèn truyền lịnh, “Các ngươi hãy chọn một người trong số những tư tế đã bị bắt đem lưu đày. Hãy đưa người ấy trở về xứ để sống tại đó, hầu người ấy sẽ dạy chúng biết cách thờ phượng vị thần của xứ ấy.” 28 Vậy một tư tế trong số những tư tế bị bắt đem lưu đày khỏi Sa-ma-ri được cho trở về và sống tại Bê-tên. Người ấy dạy cho họ biết phải thờ phượng Chúa như thể nào.
29 Tuy nhiên mỗi dân tộc đều làm những tượng thần riêng của họ, đem đặt những tượng thần ấy vào các khám thờ, rồi mang vào để trong các đền miếu trên các nơi cao mà người Sa-ma-ri đã xây. Dân tộc nào cũng lập những vị thần riêng cho mình trong các thành họ ở. 30 Dân Ba-by-lôn dựng tượng Thần Su-cốt Bê-nốt, dân Cút lập tượng Thần Nẹt-ganh, dân Ha-mát lập tượng Thần A-si-ma, 31 dân A-vi lập tượng Thần Níp-ha và Tạt-tắc, dân Sê-phạc-va-im thiêu con thơ của họ trong lửa cho Thần Át-ram-mê-léc và Thần A-nam-mê-léc, các thần của dân Sê-phạc-va-im. 32 Các dân tộc ấy cũng thờ phượng Chúa và tự chọn trong vòng họ đủ hạng người mà lập làm các tư tế cho các đền miếu ở những nơi cao. Các tư tế ấy thay mặt họ dâng các con vật hiến tế trên các tế đàn ở những nơi cao. 33 Như vậy các dân tộc ấy vừa thờ phượng Chúa nhưng cũng thờ phượng các thần của họ. Họ cứ giữ các phong tục mà dân tộc họ đã có trước khi bị lưu đày. 34 Họ vẫn tiếp tục giữ các phong tục ngày trước của họ cho đến ngày nay. Họ không kính sợ Chúa và cũng không tuân giữ các quy tắc, mạng lịnh, luật pháp, hay điều răn mà Chúa đã truyền cho các con cháu Gia-cốp, người Ngài đã đặt tên là I-sơ-ra-ên. 35 Chúa đã lập giao ước với dân I-sơ-ra-ên và truyền cho họ rằng, “Các ngươi chớ thờ phượng các thần khác, chớ thờ lạy chúng, chớ phục vụ chúng, và cũng chớ dâng các con vật hiến tế cho chúng. 36 Nhưng các ngươi chỉ thờ phượng Chúa, Ðấng đã đưa cánh tay quyền năng của Ngài ra, đem các ngươi ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập. Các ngươi chỉ thờ lạy một mình Ngài và chỉ dâng các con vật hiến tế lên Ngài. 37 Những quy tắc, mạng lịnh, luật pháp, và điều răn mà Ngài đã viết ra cho các ngươi, các ngươi phải cẩn thận vâng giữ. Các ngươi chớ thờ phượng các thần khác. 38 Các ngươi chớ quên giao ước Ta đã lập với các ngươi. Các ngươi chớ thờ lạy các thần khác. 39 Nhưng các ngươi chỉ thờ phượng Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của các ngươi. Ngài sẽ giải cứu các ngươi khỏi tay mọi kẻ thù của các ngươi.”
40 Các dân tộc mới đến cũng không nghe theo. Họ vẫn cứ tiếp tục thờ phượng các thần riêng của họ theo phong tục trước kia của họ. 41 Vậy các dân tộc đó vừa thờ phượng Chúa và cũng vừa thờ phượng các thần do họ chạm khắc hoặc đúc nên. Sau đó con cháu họ và con cháu của con cháu họ cứ tiếp tục theo truyền thống của tổ tiên họ mà làm như thế cho đến ngày nay.

17 Năm thứ mười hai triều vua A-cha của Giu-đa thì Ô-sê, con trai Ê-la, lên ngôi làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tại Sa-ma-ri. Vua trị vì được chín năm. 2 Vua làm điều tội lỗi trước mặt CHÚA, nhưng không như các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên trước vua.
3 Vua Sanh-ma-na-se của A-si-ri kéo đến đánh vua. Vua Ô-sê trở thành một chư hầu của vua ấy và phải nộp triều cống cho vua ấy. 4 Nhưng vua của A-si-ri thấy vua Ô-sê có ý làm phản, vì vua Ô-sê có sai sứ giả đến cầu vua Sô của Ai-cập giúp đỡ. Vua Ô-sê cũng không nộp triều cống hằng năm cho vua A-si-ri như thường làm nữa. Vì thế vua của A-si-ri đến bắt vua Ô-sê và tống giam vào ngục.
Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên Bị Đưa Đi Lưu Đày
5 Bấy giờ vua A-si-ri xâm chiếm xứ và tiến đánh Sa-ma-ri. Vua ấy bao vây thành Sa-ma-ri ba năm. 6 Năm thứ chín triều vua Ô-sê, vua A-si-ri chiếm được thành Sa-ma-ri. Vua ấy bắt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đem về A-si-ri. Vua cho họ định cư tại Cha-la, bên bờ sông Cha-bo, thuộc xứ Gô-sen, và trong các thành của xứ Mê-đi.
7 Việc này xảy ra vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã phạm tội cùng CHÚA, là Đức Chúa Trời của họ, là Đấng đã đem họ ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập, tức ra khỏi tay của Pha-ra-ôn, vua Ai-cập. Họ đã thờ phượng những thần khác, 8 và sống theo các tập tục của những dân mà CHÚA đã đuổi đi trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, và vì họ theo các thói tục mà các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên đã bày ra. 9 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã lén lút làm những việc không đẹp lòng CHÚA, là Đức Chúa Trời của họ. 14 Nhưng họ không chịu nghe và cứ ương ngạnh, giống như tổ phụ của họ đã làm, ấy là những người không tin vào CHÚA là Đức Chúa Trời của họ. 15 Họ khinh bỉ các mạng lệnh Ngài, họ khinh bỉ các giao ước Ngài đã lập với tổ phụ họ, và họ cũng khinh bỉ những lời cảnh cáo mà Ngài đã sai các sứ giả Ngài đến truyền cho họ. Họ đi theo những hình tượng giả dối và trở thành những kẻ giả dối. Họ bắt chước các dân tộc sống chung quanh họ, đó là những dân tộc mà CHÚA đã căn dặn họ không được làm như các dân tộc ấy.

21 Khi Ngài tách rời dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi nhà Đa-vít, họ lập Giê-rô-bô-am, con trai Nê-bát, làm vua. Giê-rô-bô-am đã lôi kéo Y-sơ-ra-ên xa cách CHÚA và xui cho họ phạm tội trọng. 22 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cứ tiếp tục đi theo những tội lỗi mà Giê-rô-bô-am đã phạm. Họ không chịu từ bỏ những tội lỗi ấy, 23 cho đến khi CHÚA cất bỏ họ khỏi trước mặt Ngài, như Ngài đã bảo trước qua các tiên tri là các tôi tớ Ngài. Vì thế, Y-sơ-ra-ên bị lưu đày khỏi xứ sở mình mà sang A-si-ri cho đến ngày nay.
Dân A-si-ri Định Cư Tại Sa-ma-ri
24 Vua A-si-ri bắt dân từ Ba-by-lôn, Cư-tha, A-va, Ha-mát, và Sê-phạt-va-im đến định cư trong các thành của Sa-ma-ri thế chỗ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Các dân ấy đến chiếm lấy Sa-ma-ri và định cư trong các thành của xứ ấy. 25 Khi mới đến định cư tại đó, họ không tôn thờ CHÚA, nên CHÚA đã sai các sư tử đến vồ chết một số người của họ. 26 Người ta bèn tâu với vua A-si-ri rằng: “Các dân tộc mà vua đã trục xuất và đày đến định cư trong các thành ở Sa-ma-ri không biết luật lệ phải tôn thờ vị thần của xứ, nên vị thần ấy đã sai các sư tử đến vồ chết một số người. Đó là vì họ không biết tôn thờ vị thần của xứ ấy vậy.”
27 Vua A-si-ri bèn truyền lệnh: “Các ngươi hãy chọn một người trong số những thầy tế lễ đã bị bắt qua đây. Hãy đưa người ấy trở về xứ và sống tại đó, để người ấy dạy cho chúng biết thờ phượng vị thần của xứ.” 28 Vậy một thầy tế lễ trong số những thầy tế lễ bị bắt đi lưu đày khỏi Sa-ma-ri được cho trở về và ngụ tại Bê-tên. Người ấy dạy cho họ biết phải thờ phượng CHÚA như thể nào.
29 Nhưng mỗi dân tộc đều dựng thần riêng của họ, đem để vào trong những trang thờ, đặt trong những đền miễu trên các nơi cao mà người Sa-ma-ri đã xây. Dân tộc nào cũng lập thần riêng cho mình trong các thành họ ở. 30 Dân Ba-by-lôn thì dựng tượng thần Su-cốt Bê-nốt, dân Cút thì lập tượng thần Nẹt-ganh, dân Ha-mát thì làm tượng thần A-si-ma, 31 dân A-vim thì làm tượng thần Níp-ca và Tạt-tác, dân Sê-phạt-va-im thì thiêu con thơ mình trong lửa cho thần A-tra-mê-léc và thần A-na-mê-léc, tức là các thần của dân Sê-phạt-va-im. 32 Các dân tộc ấy cũng thờ phượng CHÚA và tự chọn trong vòng họ đủ hạng người mà lập làm những thầy cúng cho các đền miếu trên những nơi cao; những thầy cúng ấy vì họ mà dâng các sinh tế trên các tế đàn ở những nơi cao. 33 Như vậy các dân tộc ấy thờ phượng CHÚA nhưng cũng thờ lạy các thần của họ, cứ giữ theo phong tục của dân tộc họ đã có, trước khi họ bị đem đi lưu đày.
34 Cho đến ngày nay họ vẫn tiếp tục theo các phong tục ngày trước của họ. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên không thờ lạy CHÚA, và cũng không tuân giữ các quy tắc, mạng lệnh, luật lệ hay điều răn mà CHÚA đã truyền cho các con cháu Gia-cốp, là người Ngài đặt tên là Y-sơ-ra-ên. 35 CHÚA đã lập giao ước với họ và truyền cho họ rằng: “Các ngươi chớ thờ lạy các thần khác, chớ quỳ lạy chúng, chớ phục vụ chúng, và cũng chớ dâng của tế lễ cho chúng. 36 Nhưng các ngươi chỉ hãy thờ lạy CHÚA, là Đấng đã dùng cánh tay quyền năng Ngài giang ra mà đem các ngươi ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập. Các ngươi chỉ quỳ lạy một mình Ngài và chỉ dâng của tế lễ cho Ngài. 37 Những quy luật, mạng lệnh, luật lệ và điều răn mà Ngài đã viết ra cho các ngươi, thì các ngươi phải cẩn thận tuân giữ. Các ngươi không được thờ lạy các thần khác. 38 Các ngươi không được quên giao ước mà Ta đã lập với các ngươi. Các ngươi không được thờ lạy các thần khác, 39 nhưng các ngươi chỉ hãy thờ phượng CHÚA là Đức Chúa Trời của các ngươi. Ngài sẽ giải cứu các ngươi khỏi tay mọi kẻ thù của các ngươi.”
40 Những dân tộc mới đến cũng không nghe, họ cứ tiếp tục thờ lạy theo phong tục trước kia của họ. 41 Vậy các dân tộc đó vừa thờ phượng CHÚA, nhưng cũng vừa thờ lạy các thần do họ đúc chạm tạo nên. Rồi con cháu họ và con cháu của con cháu họ cũng tiếp tục theo truyền thống như cha ông họ đã làm cho đến ngày nay.

Hoshea Reigns in Israel
17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, (A)Hoshea the son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings of Israel who were before him. 3 (B)Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea (C)became his vassal, and paid him tribute money. 4 And the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.

5 Now (E)the king of Assyria went throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria and besieged it for three years. 6 (F)In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and (G)carried Israel away to Assyria, (H)and placed them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
7 For (I)so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had (J)feared other gods, 8 and (K)had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. 9 Also the children of Israel secretly did against the Lord their God things that were not right, and they built for themselves [a]high places in all their cities, (L)from watchtower to fortified city. 10 (M)They set up for themselves sacred pillars and (N)wooden images[b] (O)on every high hill and under every green tree. 11 There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the Lord had carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger, 12 for they served idols, (P)of which the Lord had said to them, (Q)“You shall not do this thing.”
13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His (R)prophets, (S)every seer, saying, (T)“Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.” 14 Nevertheless they would not hear, but (U)stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who (V)did not believe in the Lord their God. 15 And they (W)rejected His statutes (X)and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed (Y)idols, (Z)became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them that they should (AA)not do like them. 16 So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, (AB)made for themselves a molded image and two calves, (AC)made a wooden image and worshiped all the (AD)host of heaven, (AE)and served Baal. 17 (AF)And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, (AG)practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and (AH)sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. 18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left (AI)but the tribe of Judah alone.
19 Also (AJ)Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them, and (AK)delivered them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them from His (AL)sight. 21 For (AM)He tore Israel from the house of David, and (AN)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord, and made them commit a great sin. 22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them, 23 until the Lord removed Israel out of His sight, (AO)as He had said by all His servants the prophets. (AP)So Israel was carried away from their own land to Assyria, as it is to this day.
Assyria Resettles Samaria
24 (AQ)Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, (AR)Ava, Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they took possession of Samaria and dwelt in its cities. 25 And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.” 27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land.” 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.
29 However every nation continued to make gods of its own, and put them (AS)in the shrines on the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt. 30 The men of (AT)Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 (AU)and the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites (AV)burned their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared the Lord, (AW)and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the [c]high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. 33 (AX)They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods—according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.
34 To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the Lord, nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances, or the law and commandment which the Lord had commanded the children of Jacob, (AY)whom He named Israel, 35 with whom the Lord had made a covenant and charged them, saying: (AZ)“You shall not fear other gods, nor (BA)bow down to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them; 36 but the Lord, who (BB)brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and (BC)an outstretched arm, (BD)Him you shall fear, Him you shall worship, and to Him you shall offer sacrifice. 37 And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, (BE)you shall be careful to observe forever; you shall not fear other gods. 38 And the covenant that I have made with you, (BF)you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. 39 But the Lord your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.” 40 However they did not obey, but they followed their former rituals. 41 (BG)So these nations feared the Lord, yet served their carved images; also their children and their children’s children have continued doing as their fathers did, even to this day.

Hoshea Last King of Israel(A)
17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea(B) son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2 He did evil(C) in the eyes of the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
3 Shalmaneser(D) king of Assyria came up to attack Hoshea, who had been Shalmaneser’s vassal and had paid him tribute.(E) 4 But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So[a] king of Egypt,(F) and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison.(G) 5 The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege(H) to it for three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria(I) captured Samaria(J) and deported(K) the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan(L) on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.
Israel Exiled Because of Sin
7 All this took place because the Israelites had sinned(M) against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt(N) from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods 8 and followed the practices of the nations(O) the Lord had driven out before them, as well as the practices that the kings of Israel had introduced. 9 The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city(P) they built themselves high places in all their towns. 10 They set up sacred stones(Q) and Asherah poles(R) on every high hill and under every spreading tree.(S) 11 At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the Lord had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that aroused the Lord’s anger. 12 They worshiped idols,(T) though the Lord had said, “You shall not do this.”[b] 13 The Lord warned(U) Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers:(V) “Turn from your evil ways.(W) Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.”(X)
14 But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked(Y) as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God. 15 They rejected his decrees and the covenant(Z) he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols(AA) and themselves became worthless.(AB) They imitated the nations(AC) around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.”
16 They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves,(AD) and an Asherah(AE) pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts,(AF) and they worshiped Baal.(AG) 17 They sacrificed(AH) their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens(AI) and sold(AJ) themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.
18 So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence.(AK) Only the tribe of Judah was left, 19 and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced.(AL) 20 Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers,(AM) until he thrust them from his presence.(AN)
21 When he tore(AO) Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king.(AP) Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin.(AQ) 22 The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them 23 until the Lord removed them from his presence,(AR) as he had warned(AS) through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland(AT) into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.
Samaria Resettled
24 The king of Assyria(AU) brought people from Babylon, Kuthah, Avva, Hamath and Sepharvaim(AV) and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took over Samaria and lived in its towns. 25 When they first lived there, they did not worship the Lord; so he sent lions(AW) among them and they killed some of the people. 26 It was reported to the king of Assyria: “The people you deported and resettled in the towns of Samaria do not know what the god of that country requires. He has sent lions among them, which are killing them off, because the people do not know what he requires.”
27 Then the king of Assyria gave this order: “Have one of the priests you took captive from Samaria go back to live there and teach the people what the god of the land requires.” 28 So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria came to live in Bethel and taught them how to worship the Lord.
29 Nevertheless, each national group made its own gods in the several towns(AX) where they settled, and set them up in the shrines(AY) the people of Samaria had made at the high places.(AZ) 30 The people from Babylon made Sukkoth Benoth, those from Kuthah made Nergal, and those from Hamath made Ashima; 31 the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelek(BA) and Anammelek, the gods of Sepharvaim.(BB) 32 They worshiped the Lord, but they also appointed all sorts(BC) of their own people to officiate for them as priests in the shrines at the high places. 33 They worshiped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.
34 To this day they persist in their former practices. They neither worship the Lord nor adhere to the decrees and regulations, the laws and commands that the Lord gave the descendants of Jacob, whom he named Israel.(BD) 35 When the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: “Do not worship(BE) any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them.(BF) 36 But the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm,(BG) is the one you must worship. To him you shall bow down and to him offer sacrifices. 37 You must always be careful(BH) to keep the decrees(BI) and regulations, the laws and commands he wrote for you. Do not worship other gods. 38 Do not forget(BJ) the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. 39 Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.”
40 They would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices. 41 Even while these people were worshiping the Lord,(BK) they were serving their idols. To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.

9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the Lord their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
10 And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:
11 And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the Lord carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger:
12 For they served idols, whereof the Lord had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.
13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.
14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the Lord their God.
15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them.
16 And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.
17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
20 And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.
21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the Lord, and made them sin a great sin.
22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;
23 Until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

36 But the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
37 And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.
38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
39 But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
40 Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.
