15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(A) first so that you might benefit twice.(B) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(C) to Macedonia(D) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(E) to Judea.(F) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(G) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

18 But as surely as God is faithful,(H) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(I) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[a](J) and Timothy(K)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(L) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(M) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(N) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(O) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(P) in Christ. He anointed(Q) us, 22 set his seal(R) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(S)

23 I call God as my witness(T)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(U) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(V) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(W) So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.(X) For if I grieve you,(Y) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? I wrote as I did,(Z) so that when I came I would not be distressed(AA) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence(AB) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. For I wrote you(AC) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

If anyone has caused grief,(AD) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment(AE) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(AF) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(AG) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(AH) 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan(AI) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.(AJ)

Ministers of the New Covenant

12 Now when I went to Troas(AK) to preach the gospel of Christ(AL) and found that the Lord had opened a door(AM) for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind,(AN) because I did not find my brother Titus(AO) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.(AP)

14 But thanks be to God,(AQ) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma(AR) of the knowledge(AS) of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma(AT) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.(AU) 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death;(AV) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?(AW) 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.(AX) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,(AY) as those sent from God.(AZ)

Footnotes

  1. 2 Corinthians 1:19 Greek Silvanus, a variant of Silas

15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

23 Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.

For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
